@smithy

Check this out: IBM and Sony are developing Cell-based workstations. To be used for PS3 development amongst other things.

Could such a machine by the mystery device..........?

Uh huh...so, I can certainly see at least ONE of the new '20 Questions For Hyperion' coming right now...

And umm, the BOLDED words are more important that others, sort of like Mad-libs?

ust because Apple goes x86 PPC is dead? C'mon people get a grip. So Apple pulls out so Amiga PPC is dead. Apple stays in and sucks up all the supply so Amiga PPC is also dead. C'mon man, get a grip.

You've missed the critical point -- without Apple there is no supply. IBM produces 970s for no other reason than to sell them to Apple. They are not going to spend millions of dollars running a fab plant to build chips that simply pile up in a warehouse. PowerPC technology is not going away by any means, but it is stone cold dead as far as the desktop is concerned.

IBM is no longer interested in the traditional model of building a range of processors to offer for sale. They are transforming into a custom solutions provider that uses PPC technology to implement specific-purpose chips for their customers.

The 'Xenon' CPU is a good example of this. Microsoft contracted IBM to design and build a chip for the specific purpose of running the XBox 360. IBM does the work, but the Xenon design belongs to Microsoft and will never be available to anyone else. The Cell is a similar story, although IBM won't be doing the fabrication of that part.

We'll still see the 750VX and possibly the 970MP too, but I suspect those will be the last off-the-shelf PPC chips that IBM will offer. Anyone who wants a desktop PPC will have to pay IBM to design it, then order several million of them. Can't see that happening any time soon.

This will probably seem crazy to many here, but
it seems likely that some very good orphaned
HW will be on the used market (eBay and such)
over the next 2-3 years - now why not port OS 4
to the (not very) old Apple PPC HW. It's possible
that an iMac G5 will cost less than the present A1
by next year. Let's not let good HW go to waste!

It's "Intel is the only way forward", otherwise.

See Smithy's link for your answer and BTW, the VX was cancelled ages ago.

Bingo! All in good time ofcourse, not running before we can walk.

Excellent stuff. So maybe the PC isn't the only (or even best?) way forward. I think this is indeed a bold and forward-looking move. Just what the Amiga spirit is all about IMO, doing bold and daring things as a means to success.

guyz listen up......Apple just did us a major favor

we can now court (work on) those mac developers to port their ppc software to the amiga !

we can take back the amiga video market if we want to, it just ours to take
and the video market can sustain the Amiga, just as it did before.

lets get organized, we have two years.

C'mon guys. Is this some kind of contest to see who can make the wildest specualtions in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of information?

Give it a week and see what developes and what is actually being planned.

With no other desktop OS being developed for the PPC this could be an interesting market for the Amiga. Especially if it scales well on the many versions of PPC that are available.
