"It's Baaaaaack!"

Under update three, I don't know if this behavior is expected/normal, but in printer prefs I was unable to use the requestor to try choosing lpr. device, if I had checked "Use custom device." No matter what I did with the file chooser (just plain old #?) no files would show up in the requestor. But even left on the default Parallel, lpr: still "just worked."

Under update 4, we can now choose devices in the devs directory. I'm still printing from prefs/graphic/parallel, or whatever the usual print requestor is in each program. But the main thing seems to be to select "Use custom device" and choose lpr: in the main printer prefs. The rest of lpr: setup is otherwise the same as it was under update 3.

Unfortunately JIT doesn't seem to provide much of a speedup for lpr:

Paul

There is now a native PPC version of lpr available on OS4depot. haven't tried it yet, and I have a quick writep on AW for network printing, I think someone linked it into OS4Zone if it's of any help to anyone.

Sure, here we go:

1. Make sure that the ContextMenus commodity is running (with or without the IGNOREFOCUS tooltype)
2. Open up your Workbench icon, then double-click on Tools
3. In the "View By" menu for the Tools directory, select "Name"
4. Resize the Tools directory window so that only 3 or 4 lines of text are visible
5. Right-click on the Tools window's title bar, you should see a "Directory" type popup menu
6. Drag the vertical scrollbar down a cm or so.
7. Right-click on the Tools window's title bar again

Expect: to see the same "Directory" type popup menu
Actual: the popup menu that appears will be a "Drawer" or "Tool" one, depending on how far you've scrolled the vertical scrollbar

I think I've reproduced this, but not consistently. What _seems_ to be happening is that when you right click on the left hand side of the name listing, it's selecting the file or drawer closest to the mouse, even though you are on the titlebar. Actually, it MAY be selecting the item _behind_ the titlebar. To verify this:
Make sure no item is selected when you start this test.
Once you see the 'odd' behavior, scroll upwards slightly, and see if an item is now selected. Alternatively, if you always right click on the right hand side of the window, you will _always_ get only the 'Directory' context menu. is this true for you?

Added into top level post with info, marked as bug.

I did a clean install of update 4 and I have an observation or two about ContextMenus.

1. Under the 'Preferences' sub-menu there are two (2) items listed, ' Overscan' and
'Serial' that do not appear to have a corresponding file in the Preferences drawer.

2. Under the 'Tools' sub-menu, Partition Wizard will not run. It does run from the icon
in the 'Tools' drawer.

I would hazard a guess that this might be because the program (in the 'Tools' drawer) is
named 'PartitionWizard' (no spaces), while under 'ContextMenu/Tools' the program is called
'Partition Wizard' (space between Partion and Wizard).

This isn't from ContextMenu AFAIK, it's from another commodity. Can someone confirm which this is, and if they see the same behavior?

Carried out a clean install of update 4 on a new drive with no problems! However, ImageFX 4 Studio no longer installs.
During installation, the message 'Unable to locate source file/drawer 'RAM: Browser info in line 1717'' comes up and aborts the process.
I've checked the CD for damage - its OK !! Also refitted the original disk with update 3, and all goes well!!

A1XE/7451-800.

I haven't tried a reinstall of ImageFX, but recall this not installing via Installer the last time, and it being pretty painful/needing to be done 'by hand'...anyone else confirm either if they've ever seen ImageFX install on OS4 correctly or not, either way?

Having problems with printing graphics. With update3 using:

printer.device 51.11 (18.12.05)
parallel.device 50.4 (18.7.04)
a1parallel.device 51.4 (26.10.05)
HP_DeskJet_690C (30.11.1999) (the printer driver)

I managed to print graphics (for example jpeg pictures with Multiview) with no
problems but had severe problems with AWeb printing. It did a narrow horizontal
strip of pure black. Only way to get Aweb to print correctly was to change to
8bit screen and change to very-old HP550C printer driver. With OS3.9 I had made
a program which printed out a large bitmap with the strip printing technique
perfectly. In OS4 the same program has always printed only the first strip.

Now with OS4upd4 and using the provided drivers in it:

printer.device 51.11 (18.12.05)
a1parallel.device 51.4 (26.10.05)
HP_DeskJet_690C (29.9.1999) (is this older one?)

I print using Multivew and get somewhat good result in the top part of the
picture (about one third). Then there comes a line of odd characters (seem to be
the higher part of the ASCII table like graphic marks, smileys etc), may be a
form feed and the printing continues with the picture. Now AWeb can print with
this driver more correctly but these odd lines of characters come with a regular
interval (maybe from strip printing?)

So what's the problem with this printing?

Marko

Using A1XE-800, OS4upd4 (fresh install), HP690C printer

Is this still a problem after following the 'rule' about uncommenting the line in NDSPatch.cfg and setting the device to use to a1parallel.device for you?

I think I found another one. If you play with the gui prefs, and set the menu transparency, the percent transparency isn't respected by ContextMenus - it respects that you did ask for transparency, but it seems to be about 50% regardless of what you set as % transparency.

It's easy to reproduce this: go to the GUI prefs program, then the "menus" tab, then select you want transparency under "Appearance Properties". Then set the transparency to 90%. Click on "Use", then pull down a menu and see how wispy it is. Right-click on something and you'll see that the popup menu is a lot more "solid" than the pulldown menu.

This works here, although there are differences noted because of the backgroun and menu coloring, anyone else on this one?

I have noticed a few thing in upd4 worth mentioning:

1. The commodity toBack&Front doesn't work anymore. I complains about the commands. I used to have "FRONT_ACTION=rawmouse leftbutton rbutton rbuttoncode" and "BACK_ACTION=rawmouse leftbutton midbutton mbuttoncode" in the tooltypes to be able to move a window to front by holding left mouse and then click right mouse. To move a window to back (which CLickToFront can't do at all IIRC) I could hold left mouse and click middle mouse.
Now it complains about "Error in description" for these actions.

2. I tried to configure ClickToFront so I could use the front-click function anyway, but it always reacts on the left mouse only, no matter what I set the tooltypes to. Ex: I tried "USEBUTTON=RBUTTON" and "QUALIFIER=LEFTBUTTON" to get the behaviour of holding left while clicking right, but it doesn't work. No error messages or anything
How do I configure ClickToFront??

3. I dragged my WB screen title bar out of view and released it there. Then I couldn't get it back. Is there any way (excpet configuring extra qualifiers) to get a screen back to its default position when the title bar is not reachable??

4. My programs AllKeys(OS4) and QuickSketch(68k) don't work. I think AllKeys crashes input.device because of sharing of non-sharable memory. Why QS fails I have no idea. I'll look into it.

Adding #3 to list as well as #4, any changes in #s 1 and 2?

Did you read the original DSL-Speed thread where the solution was mentioned, or just wegster's summary at the start of this thread? There was an important addition in the following message from joerg that wegster did not include. There is a tcp.sendspace size control you can also change to 64K like the recvspace one. You seem to be complaining of sending throughput, not receiving, so I'm guessing this is your problem and you are just having underflow slowdowns when sending from the A1.

Scott Woodall

Thanks, noted!

Hi,

I'm sure that I red something about directory corruption of a Flash Card with files writing with Windows XP when connected on my card reader of my A1 XE/900Mhz
but can't find the message anymore...

I would like to know if there is a solution for that problem or we must wait for an update?

Thank you.

There seem to be several USB and flash related issues, don't think anything definitive or a valid workaround is known for sure yet.

Anyone?

i have a problem with the menu.
here i've set it up as sticky, non-bloquant.
so, i RMB to open up the menu and i LMB on the stuff i want to do.
so far so good..

but if i press LMB without releasing it, i'm just hesitating now,
and i pass mouse pointer over few menu entries until i decide ..
then i decide which entry i want to select, i release LMB on it, and,
surprise ;)
all the menu entry over which i passed the mouse pointer will get started.

you can reproduce this with default workbench menus, or with customised entries.
here i use addmenu.rexx to add entries to the menu.

i have a menu entry called "internet" in which i have yam,ibrowse,atc,...
if i pass the mouse pointer over them all while LMB is keept pressed,
when i'll release the button, say on yam, all the apps will get start, yam, ib, atc ...

so you'd better not press LMB and wait to decide, passing over menu entries, they will all get executed .

i hope my explanation is understandable.

This isn't contextmenus, which commodity is this, or is this in AmiDock?

Yep, it's what I get for going 'a page at a time.' Confirmed this is the output of the SDK supplied date command, versus C:Date. Noting in update in progress in the event others see the same issue in the different output from different date commands.

Thanks!

Confirmed and fixed in the meantime, the current ContextMenus comes with
different sample preferences files for different machines, Overscan and
Serial are not distributed with the A1 version of OS4.

This is ContextMenus. Click with the right mouse button in the workbench root
window. Didnt test if it works also when you dont have a workbench root window
because you use workbench in backdrop mode.

Not qualified to give a definitve answer, or if the root cause is known or corrected, but it seems that at least in some cases, it is not (yet?) correctable. There may be workarounds, but nothing definitive yet AFAIK.
