The hard disks are Western Digital (20 GB) and Hitachi (80 GB). DVD devices are in the signature.

I didn't test the DVD devices though.

My installation is Sarge. I may see into updrading it later.

I just installed this kernel and it works for me under Lenny. Even my 'Linux to Amiga' partition works now.

Where is the kernel.img file supposed to be installed? In the same drawer as the 'a1boot.conf' file? In the /boot directory of the partition? (I put mine in both to be safe)

The kernel image, System.map and a1boot.conf file should all be in /boot/, which has to be a directory in the root partition and not a partition on its own (that is mounted at /boot).

I just reinstalled a Woody base system on my old Linux partition. And specified this kernel, however although it mounts my hdc2, later it tries to open my hdg2! Which doesn't exist. Before I had a 2.6.16.60 IIRC and it had the same problem. What's going on here? I do have ide=reverse in my kernel line.

What's in /etc/fstab?

Sorry, reply slipped by. As obvious buy now, I have wiped the partition with Etch! But, IIRC, the kernel found my hdc2, but the Woody system didn't know about the ide=reverse and could not see it. Whatever I tried I could not reverse it on Woody. The contents of fstab are forgotten now. And no matter as I have upgraded it!

My only a1boot.conf file is in a partition on my Amiga disk, hda9 aka /a1boot; I select whether to boot hdc2 linux via 2.6.8 or 2.6.18 (or 2.6.26 if I were silly enough to want to), hda11 linux via 2.6.18 (where I am now), or OS4 from the list that file provides when I do a boota.

/boot is, aside from /. and /.., totally empty, yet here I am, thanks to kernelhd-2.6.18.img in /a1boot/boot. (I can tell that is what is being used, because there is not unarchiving at the beginning of the boot process.)

I originally put /modules/2.6.18 in /a1boot/lib. I added it to /lib a couple days ago, because Hypex told me that is where they had to be, and the fact that they weren't there was to cause of a problem I am having. I don't see that putting them in /lib has improved the situation at all.

My current problem is that hda9 linux, a new one installed with Hypex' Etch install disk and the first Debian Etch CD, refuses to find any USB devices attached to my hub. I thought maybe the problem was that I didn't have the system map in the right place, and that's what brought me back to this old thread, but surely it should be where the kernel is, i.e. in /a1boot/boot, where I've had it all along?

So how does the content of you a1boot partition look like (with 'ls -l')?

They have to be under /lib/, because they're loaded after the root filesystem has been mounted. What's the problem with the kernel modules?

The host USB drivers for UHCI, OHCI and EHCI are directly compiled into the kernel and thus should detect an attached USB device right after the kernel is loaded. The correct driver for the device is loaded after the root filesystem is mounted. However there are no kernel drivers for scanners, as these devices are handled by SANE in userspace (as you know). It's not a big problem, if the System.map file is missing (IIRC it's used for debugging only), but you're right: it should be where the kernel image is.

As regards the USB problem, I made a poor attempt to update the situation in another thread. In short, whenever I have to do a reboot to get a linux desktop, which will come up without USB connections, all it turns out I have to do is turn off my powered hub and turn it back on. All my devices that are turned on are immediately found (and anything I add or turn on later is also recognized, of course).

Okay, that explains why the SLB is able to find the a1boot.conf file and the kernel images (because they're in /boot/).

Good to know! It helps a little bit to understand what the real problem is.
