For an international website the only time to make sense to all would be UT. No local timezone would mean anything. |
Or you could use IP-to-country mapping to make it local time everywhere. I like that idea because it means that I would be one of the first to get the news.

You are missing the point.
The web masters have stated to update or release something at a specific time, their local time would make sense to them but no one else. And regardless of IP mapping the time in your country would not be the same as the time they do it.
If something is stated as being released at 00:00:01 on 1/1/2010 then the only standard time zone that should be used is Universal Time. Either that or they should state the timezone that the quoted time is applicable to.

| X, yellow and black, part of a puzzle, i think no one of us has found the key of the matter !
and only one hour remaining to enter 2010 !
it's confusing because all speculations come from the new FF port screenshots !

I was well aware of why it's January 1 here, and the news is not on the site yet before I wrote my original post; guess that I should have put a smiley in there. In my reply, I was originally going to suggest using Samoa time so that it's been 1 January everywhere but decided to suggest this more "international" solution instead.

Nonsense, you could easily set up a website to show an old page if the local time is before a specific (local) time, and the new page if it's after that time.

I disagree, UTC makes the most sense to you guys in the UK, because it's your timezone; calling it "universal" doesn't make it any more meaningful to the rest of us. Choosing the timezone is up to the website owner, and I have seen many international websites that have chosen to use North American Pacific time without actually stating it.

You are WRONG.
Yes it does happen to be the same as GMT but that is not the reason it should be used.
It is the international scientific timezone used for all comparitive data. THAT is why it is called UT not because it is the timezone used here.
It is the same as GMT for historical reasons, but when any time is specified to be understood the world over it is the standard and assumed if no specific local time is specified.
So yes you were completely missing the point. |

| Erm... I'm probably missing the point here - but doesn't X = 10 in roman numerals?
E.g. 2010 is the year when it (MAP!) happens! |

Hehehehe,
and now I can see that "There are no hidden messages in this site", just above "Best viewed in OWB, Firefox, Opera or IE" if I zoom in the browser enough.
This is very exciting. Can't wait the next piece of puzzle. _________________ You can crack anything with your head, even the head itself. -------------------------------- ...proud AOS user since 1993 -------------------------------- |

Oh dear, are you really going to turn this into a big issue? Seriously?
And no, I'm not wrong here; a lot of international websites really do choose PST without stating it, and no, they don't have to use UTC, nor would it make more sense to the rest of the world.
Quote:

I NEVER said that it was UTC because it matches GMT, reread my post. It's useful as a timezone independent reference for computers and scientific stuff, but that doesn't make it good for announcements, press releases, or general human use (most people aren't scientists). For general use, UTC is as arbitrary as anything else.
Quote:
So yes you were completely missing the point. |
Whatever man, I still don't see a point in this. You want everyone to use UTC for stuff like this, and others don't feel like it. Get over it.
