Congratulations and thanks to Hyperion (well, the A-EON partners, indeed, whoever they are)
Nice and corageous project. I think the choice of starting from the high-end makes perfectly sense. Also, taking the reprogrammable chips path is definitely a much useful (in many senses) and needed focus shift. Of course a big issue is getting AmigaOS to make good use of such power, but I'm sure Hyperion have been hard at work to tackle it (otherwise, this announcement would be somewhat empty).
Best luck to all (them and us, I mean)!
Unfortunately I don't have the money to support the project from the very beginning, so I'll be waiting for a low-cost version (possibly without all the legacy slots and ports). Yeah, I fancy the idea of an X1200 as well

@asymetrix

It is amazing though, how the colors can make the ball look so big among all other rather similar colors here on AW

Your support is appreciated, and the idea is fun!

On the X1000 thread, the CPU is described as "Power Architecture™".

Why the trademark sign? You only use these if the name is trademarked to a particular company.

SO

Who owns that trademark? I think it is IBM?

@BigBentheAussie

Running Java bytecode or other bytecode would be very useful.

Especially Javascript. Firefox for example has plugins that use alot of javascript and future page loading which sometimes slows the UI.

These bottlenecks, if identified and accelerated using Xena and properly threaded would lower cpu load and make a smoother user experience.

also tcpip/ethernet, encryption especially wireless, AREXX, Python etc - all under the hood operations can benefit greatly by hardware acceleration.

I just hope that AmigaOS does not saturate too much the Xena bandwidth / real estate.

We are definately going to see a huge performance jump though with the new AmigaOne X1000 system !

@Hyperion

I hope full documentation will be issued, eg:

New Hardware reference Manual
New Libs and Devs Manual

and a new Programmig Manual ( with working examples) etc.

Wol..

This is very exciting hardware and a very bold move by Hyperion. This kind of hardware, that is different and may become a real new Amiga, I was hoping for and not just some regular PC mobo. But I did not believe anyone would be brave enough to do it, until now, hurray Hyperion! I hope everything (hard+software) works out well and it becomes a great success. (Although, I'm waiting for more info about the software part as well, knock knock...)

This move has the potential to fulfill my dream since many many years...

AmigaOne X1000, welcome to the family and may the OS be with you!

Although this hardware is more interesting and powerful than SAM, I am convinced this is not the MAP itself. There must be more to this on the software side which Hyperion are yet to release info on.

No, sending java/javascript away from a multi-kilo-mips CPU, over a (comparatively) slow link, to be processed by a 100 mips[1] CPU with all of 64kB of memory will *not* make for a smoother user experience.

[1]: Per thread, tops. And you won't find a multi-threaded interpreter in 64k.

Since when was Hyperion a hardware company? Have I missed something? Who is their hardware partner?

@umisef

Would be interesting to know something on the software side. Will it run OS 4.1, 4.2? How the multicore tech will be handled, since currently OS4 doesn't manage such things. There will be a patch to the kernel or what?

Thank you.

@BigD

Xcore is one of them,but i bet they got more patners than that,and i guess there are some software partners involved as well.

Javascript wont be assisted by this. It isn't bytecode.
We'll have a hard enough time implementing Just-In-Time Javascript compilation on PPC like the more advanced x86 Javascript engines do.

Actually, I don't even see how Java could be assisted by this. From a purely processing point of view I don't see how XCores help us.

I can see how it helps from a real-time I/O signal processing point of view, and frees up the main CPU. Sorta like you would use the Cells in a PS3, except much slower in clock speed.

However, the XMOS chips only seem useful in the absence of having a strong CPU hanging around. As in hobby projects and the like. I don't understand at this point what the benefit is and I am really trying to.

I'd really like to be wrong, but I'll just come out and say what I am thinking. Don't flame me, but I can't help but think that the addition of only a single core chip is because A-eon discovered too late that it wasn't useful for the majority of people.

@Caveman
Yeah, its nice to have a faster CPU and XMOS looks like a nice little gadget. The only thing I can think is that Hyperion have already got a plan and/or software glue to do something useful and clever with it (MAP?)

I must admit I was expecting a little more info today. If it is going to be out before the summer then hopefully we will have more info in the coming days and weeks

Isn't it obvious that the MAP is SMP? :
It has been said to be impossible to implement on AmigaOS, and clearly it has been, or will soon be, achieved, as the X1000 has a multiple core PPC CPU.

Throwing in the XCore stuff should be considered icing. You'd have been salivating over the multi-core PPC alone. And you know it!!!

Wth Amiga libraries, just as usual?
