Would still be nice to know something about the birth & history of MUI4 though...

While Itix is preparing his history report (heh), I'll offer AW links to both the beta and the alpha.

March, 2006 beta

July, 2005 alpha with extensive notes

This is the source for one of my posts on amigans.net (same topic).

@rzookol

it would be nice if we got some more input from some developers who have had issues with zune in the past. That way we can at least compile a list of bugs that need to be fixed for the bounty.

There's no point in expanding on it until there major bugs are fixed.

@ShInKurO

I don't know, maybe something about paying for a bounty, taking a bounty as programmer or:

MUI4 sources can't be obtained and closed source UI doesn't match with AROS/OS4 so:

1) We should set up a bounty for ZUNE update.
2) We should choose another UI (Feeling/Triton/QT/Newgui/BGUI) and make portability among AmigaOSes even more complicated.
3) I don't mind, Reaction is cool and we should wait another couple of years for update.
4) Sorry, I don't remember Amiga UI at all, I have working Cygnix with amigalike skin and I'm using only Gimp and Abiword.
5) Shell rules, where is my telnetd deamon?

Forgot to add:
4b) OTOH, having Zune, i will automagically and instantly have equivalent - if not better - applications to replace The Gimp and Abiword

Note: i don't have anything against this proposal, it's just that sometimes it seems to me that those "accusing" OS4 users of having "political/religious" reasons against it, sometimes use the same methods of twisting and presenting things, eventually trying to look funny too.

@Nibunnoichi

The main information for the poll is:
1) How many people want to support this bounty
2) How many developers could support this bounty
3) How many users want to have ZUNE ported/updated for OS3/OS4

@terminills

I think the best bet for a bounty would actually be to specify a certain set of MUI applications that should be possible to run with Zune for the bounty to be satisfied. That way the feature set becomes relatively clear.

I believe this is the best choice, but for now we have difined only first step, we can open a bounty even with that, but it is not complete... as you've suggested, we should vote this (if to open a bounty only with first step).

@vidarh

The only problem with that is what happens if the programs that are currently "working" get ignored. I seem to recall jahc has had to do some work arounds to get his programs to work with zune and I'm sure he's not the only one.

@terminills

That's a good point, but still probably less important since that work is already "sunk cost", though I do think the long term goal ought to be full compatibility.

That's why I would like to see some input from developers who have run into the bugs .. sure they've already worked around the bugs ... but that doesn't mean that fixing the bugs they've run across wouldn't help others ... Plus since they've already found the bugs if they've documented them it should help in fixing them so other developers don't run into the same issues.

Tim

edit: I just think it would be a shame to miss an opportunity to fix zune in the process of enhancing it.

the poll list sounds good! just dont forget to distinguish between the will og supporting, donating and directly contributing to the project. that would be important aspect.
as for workarounds for zune i suspect its due to its bugs and incompatibilities that we would get rid of in the course of the project at last, at least i recall of shinkuro having same probs.

It's time to insert at least the first step as bounty on power2people, but I don't understand how to do this...

@ShInKurO

do you have any signals from developers that would eventually take care of it in foreseeable future, because creating a bounty without a serious assignment in sight might not create enough current, say people (like me) would not be willing to support as long as there is no expectation it will be done for real. i do not believe we can just sit and count on that someone dedicated appears out of nowhere.

ShInKurO, please ignore this thread and posts like wawa's (though wawa made some good points earlier, IMO) until the bounty is created. Enough time has been wasted trying to build a grand consensus, even if the initial bounty is less ambitious than the final goal it's a tangible step in the right direction.

@HenryCase

I agree. Whether or not the bounty attracts money and developers is a far more reliable indicator than anything that'll come out of this thread.

@ShInKurO
If you do create a bounty, it would be wise to make it as UNambitious as possible, and also break it into small chunks that might look attractive for someone to attempt. The AmiZilla bounty is an example of how *not* to do it.
