Sorry the Title was inspired by Steve Balmer! LOL!

Just a quick question, how many of us are going to start developing when the pre-release with dev tools is released?

and what type of apps/games are you writing?

Erhmm... by looking at his avatar, perhaps he has something else to do !

I'd love programming some kind of serious app for OS4, but programming is too difficult for me, hence i already did some good stuff in PHP, it's a kid game comparing to C/C++ !

@choochy

I plan to. But a PhD might come in between if the release is delayed too much ...

@choochy

Count me in, I've got some ideas for some missing applications, data encryption, web logging, it's probably going to take a few months before I am proficient enought with the new development kit before I start to produce anything useful, I somehow don't think my "Hello World" C program would be a top seller

I'm purposly waiting for the dev kit before I get any deeper into C programming, that way everything I learn will be relevant, and won't have to learn the differences between the old C version I have at the moment and the new one.

My programming background is BASIC (AmigaBasic (Yuk! A Microsoft product) ) AMOS, HiSoft, Blitz, MS Visual Basic) but have thought I would take this opportunity to migrate to C, I've been reading the manuals to get an idea of the syntax, so far looks simple enough, as I've described C before, it's exactly like BASIC, only the words are slightly different and the words are in a different order.

Because of this new learing curve, it's going to take a little longer than 1st planned to release a polished product, but the advantages outweigh this disadvantage:

1. I will be producing PPC native code
2. C Coding should produce tighter, faster code than BASIC (although Hisoft could give C a run for it's money if it produced PPC Native)
3. It's about time I started using a "grown up" language and not this kids stuff BASIC

Hmm, Smaller, Better, Faster

Not me - not right away.

When the price of the A1 comes down a bit, when OS4 can drive a graphics card that didn't come out of the bargain bin, when the ArticiaS DMA bug is confirmed as being just a Linux problem, then I'll buy one and get started.

Of course, that doesn't stop me making sure all my 3.9 code is easily portable to OS4.0

I guess a Radeon 9800 AIW qualifies, then.

@Rogue

Driving a modern graphics card is about more than just putting up a desktop. What about 3D? Or the MPEG decoder? Or the video de-interlacer, video-shaders, and the rest of the 9800's functionality. Since you've said the best card OS4 will support in 3D is a Radeon 7500, I think my comment is quite accurate - it's an old, slow card you'd find the bargain bin.

I think OS4 looks like a very promising product (and I don't for a moment mean to detract from all the hard work you guys have put into it) , but no matter how good the OS is I'm thinking twice about paying a huge sum of money for a possibly buggy motherboard that'll probably be slower than my existing system for 68k code, and which runs an OS that won't support cards I'm happily using right now.

Still, I'd be happy if someone could convince me I'm being overly negative about this

I am.

The specifics are classified for now, but I can reveal the following:
*It's a game.
*It is based on tried-and-tested gameplay mechanisms, but will hopefully not be yet-another-XXXX.
*It will be in 2D.
*We will need some pixel artists and musicians at some point. Who are willing to work for free (I'm not expecting any profit).

@choochy

We will have a OS4 version of SBasePro4 (formerly SuperBase) available shortly.
New improvements will also be added.

@Kay

I'd be happy to take a stab at music if you don't mind trackers (Octamed, Protracker or even a PC tracker like Impulse Tracker, Renoise or Fasttracker).

@Legion

Thanks. I don't mind trackers at all, in fact, it would probably be the most suited for the style of the game.

It's a bit early still, though. We're still working on architecture, game design and specification. I'll contact you once we've gotten a bit further. Thanks!

1. Yes i will.

2. Some porting of own windows apps, and perhaps a toolkit (gui part of it)

Also trying to make some intros / demos on the new machine would be fun.

our team "push-entertainment" have been developing for it for some time now, the pre release or not , people can start when ever they want , though a devkit is something you would need .
