@tommysammy

Perhaps PPC processor are like wine, the older the more expensive no just a joke

I do not know the calculation of Trevor and the X1000 but 1000$ for the processor would be too much in my view. There is obviously someone that wants to earn very much with it and I do not think it is worth the money (and I would drop it just because of anger and protest).

But it is the decision of Trevor...

What do you expect? PPC is dead in the desktop market, I have learned from the posts that it is still used for game consoles and IBM uses it partly for its servers. But IBM is not known for good prices and other solutions are not strong enough for desktop purposes. If Trevor would have had a option to choose a processor that is cheaper and still in production he would have chosen it.

PowerPC is dead on desktop at least since 2006.

@TrevorDick

What about T4240 from Freescale? I don´t think it will be much more expensive than PA6T.

@OlafS25

I am at the moment very much frustrated.I thought with the X 1000 it comes the turn.
Nothing happens. We are talking since two or three years over so much things like 3D, like multicoresupport. Maybe i am on the wrong side. Morphos or Aros are no alternative one.
Maybe i go back to PC or Apple

"Morphos or Aros are no alternative one."

Why? I do not understand that view.

And turn... How should X1000 make a difference today? It is the fastest system running AOS, not more not less. It is much too expensive just to be considered outside the AOS community. It was never intended to turn something.

I do understand.

Since my childhood I was Amiga user. I enjoyed Amiga computers and AmigaOS. I don´t think I can look at AROS or MorphOS with the same passion. There are many alternative OSs around here and MorphOS or AROS certainly aren´t among the best.

You are just another daydreamer who never use AmigaOS.

Propably you only understand it or not... I personally decided for Aros because it is opensource so everybody can take part and make a difference and it means independence from any company (or team) so nobody can destroy it (like it happened in the past).

And in the past Amiga was the special hardware (not the OS) for me so I never developed this kind of connection to the OS.

Try Haiku or Linux. These OSs at least support multiple cores.

I have Kubuntu at home already, and Haiku is a nice OS without software

What problem do you have with Aros?

My A1200 thinks otherwise.

On the other hand, as sole member of this forum still loyal to Bill McEwen I certainly can´t be fully sane.

No problem. I like AROS and use it for some of my experiments (I´m one of the few AROS users who were able to play Windows 95 games under AROS DosBox). I only don´t appreciate it as high as AmigaOS.

I think I went a little bit OT.

http://edageek.com/2010/11/03/multicore-soc/

it looks like the v2.06 B is 32 bit and 64bit, if its 64bit only its useless.

This what Wikipedia say about it:

Quote:

Power ISA v.2.06

The specification for Power ISA v.2.06[10][16] was released in February 2009, and revised in July 2010.[17] It is based on Power ISA v.2.05 and includes extensions for the POWER7 processor and e500-mc core. One significant new feature is vector-scalar floating-point instructions (VSX). Book III-E also includes significant enhancement for the embedded specification regarding hypervisor and virtualisation on single and multi core implementations.

The spec was revised in November 2010 to the current Power ISA v.2.06 revision B spec, enhancing virtualisation features. [22]

"PPC is dead in the desktop market, I have learned from the posts that it is still used for game consoles and IBM uses it partly for its servers."

PPC is "dead" on desktop only for two reasons.
-no-one is producing simple+cheap PPC motherboard for desktop use
-PPC can not match with fastest desktop chips on the market (well... Freescale can do 100 000MIPS with their chip, same as IBM with POWER, but AMD64 instruction set seems anyway to have the edge for desktop power users)

Yesterday I received a webshop advert selling 1.4Ghz AMD and Intel based laptops for 400-500eur and I thought everything below 1.7Ghz are netbooks, well I learn every day.

IMHO:
-1Ghz PPC SOC that costs 30eur is enough for macmini kind of low end desktop (or like CDTV-SG setup below the TV), when lightweight OS is in use.
-1.6Ghz (24 virtual core) PPC SOC is enough for most power user's desktop with lightweight & MP capable OS.
-2.4Ghz dual or quadcore PPC SOC (not out yet with Altivec) might be enough for modern games.
-And 5Ghz POWER based Amiga would cost "only" twice the amount of x1000 with 10x? performance.

So, even if PPC is behind, to me it still seems usable. We need SW and cheap entry level HW @ 1Ghz.

I have to say I dont understand why the CPU would cost so much, after all their cant be that much demand for it now other than our market I would of thought. I suppose its based on just how many are left on the market, I feel sorry for Tevor again having to pay out and not make any money back.

I very pleased I got an x1000 and even more grateful that I got mine when I did, I would of hated the wait while seeing other enjoy their machine.

It is a bit of shame that the market hasn't really got much better for OS4 with X1000, I mean its difficult to tell but with audio evolution 4 being made free and looking likely to not be developed any more, Aladdin 4d mess, pagestream looks also to be dead and the best app on OS4, Hollywood off from sale its a bit of low point, however I'm very pleased with the progress of Timberwolf, and Amicygnix. I had some fun getting back on my Amiga and I'm looking forward to the graphics update, I just hope that these software title return or can continue and new software follows and take advantage of X1000. I'm myself am working on Amipad 3 and WWTBAA game (2 more weeks ) . So in the end I'm glad I got one, its truly unique computer, its always the talking point now when anyone come round my house, they usually say, “WTF is that!” I just hope it a success for the creators.

PS: if you a fan of the Amiga and you dont at least try Aros or Morphos then you are missing out, I've not tried morphos simple because I dont own or have the room for a ppc mac, but Aros is a great little OS and has come a long way in the last few years, I think I would of gave up on OS4 and moved to that platform if it wasn't for the X1000.

Maybe a chip vendor saw the X1000 as an opportunity to charge whatever they liked.

The sooner they can migrate to a more readily available CPU the better.

I doubt it is possible without complete redesign.
