@Hypex

I rather they ported the new version to ARM, and made it run on the Raspberry Pi and various other cheap boards like the ODROID II. Sell it for a fiver, to a far far larger market.

1/2 of 440EP performance? No thanks.

x86 is much better suited for desktop/laptop needs (if we talk about architecture change).

@NutsAboutAmiga

I think you mean "harder" as in "unconcevaibly easier, if not inherently already present by design".

I don't understand the obsession with ports to ARM. x86 hardware is cheap too, plentiful and blows ARM out of the water. The x86 also gives you access to the same video, audio and other hardware that we have access to under PPC, it's easier to port existing drivers than create new.

It's not going to happen anyway. Hyperion/Ben have stated enough times that they are sticking to PPC for the foreseeable future.

@Rob: Simple: x86 is the enemy. x86 sucks. x86 is power hungry. x86 programming sucks.

I know this is mostly wrong today, but Amiga people are stuck in the eighties...

You mean fake it, well if you implement something that is fake, it be no way of knowing if it works in real life, and you can't really say you have SMP, if you are just wrapping around the host OS.

If you lessened to, HJF at round table interview, you know this.

Basically lack of resources to do anything else then continue working whit PowerPC, that’s way, they do not have the resources and its not practical to do two major changes at once.

I do not know if he said it but it but it's going too be too hard to track down what went wrong in system when there are two major changes that affect everything in the OS at once.

They can ether do enchantments on PowerPC, or they can do the port to x86 and do no enchantments to the OS.

So basically they have decided that SMP support is what they want to prioritize, what happens later is an unknown story.

If all the fanboys would listen to the few developers that know about these things (SMP dual processor support, mem protection, etc) you would know that its NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Just more carrot dangling.

Lets focus on what IS possible and realistic. LIke exciting projects like LIbre Office and Timberwolf.

Lousy carrot loving fanboys!

These ignorant, one eyebrow, knuckle dragging, pimples on the butt of
true soothsayers need to singled out and taken care of.

Lets make a list. Here, I'll start it.

What developers of "THE" OS say is that is possible to implement SMP, I really don't care what other developers for other operating systems say is really not relevant. This other operating systems are not AmigaOS anyway.

SMP was out of the question as long as they did not have a dual core CPU module, and working motherboard, the XE/SE bugs did take a long time to fix.

It's funny you say that because they always bragged about having some dual cpu modules to test on their A1XE

@Crumb

They also bragged about finally get ArticiaS to play nice after many months/years, pulling hair. It probably did not work, the long treads about usability, I remember having all sorts of strange things happening on my AmigaONE-XE before they found the bugs, it was around AmigaOS4.0 prerelease update 1 or 2, the CrossDOS/USB fixes in 3 or 4 I believe things started to work as it should.

But even today, AmigaONE-XE is not as fast as PegasusII when it comes to reading and writing, it should be clear that dual core CPU module did not make a lot of sense, when you have bother neck like that, besides there was also issues whit via686b and some registers I don't remember and onboard sound, and pull down resistors on USB ports, And AGP/PCI 66Mhz IRQ crap.

AmigaOS4.0 update 5 was pretty good.

I am going to be amazed if dual CPU module ever worked as expected, considering the long list of problems whit Eyetech SE/XE/Micro machines.

It’s a bit like Dragon or SharkPPC by Elbox has flashed the cards in public events but does the Dragon or SharkPPC work?
