Big announcement by Gunnar on the Apollo Core Knowledge Forum

There is some movement of AROS, the open source AMIGA OS.

Three things are needed to build AMIGAs.
A) A good 68K CPU
B) The real AMIGA chipset, ideally enhanced
C) AMIGA OS

AROS can offer the OS.

To Support this Open Movement, we hereby announce that we will open source SAGA (the enhanced AMIGA chipset).

IMO, this is great news, and something that is way past due. Commodore should have begun work to improve the Amiga chipset beyond AGA, just as they had done to move from OCS to ECS, and finally to AGA. It was very sad and frustrating to see the Amiga stall after the release of AGA machines, and AmigaOS3.1 (I think AmigaOS3.5 & 3.9 were both too little and too late). Many users expressed their disappointment in AGA, and stated that it was also "too little, and too late", when it was released, and were shocked that the A600 was released with ECS, and not even AGA.

IMO, it is fantastic news to see that anyone is actually doing work to move the original concept of the Amiga and its chipset forward, beyond what the A1200, A4000, and CD32 provided with AGA, because as great as RTG and true color 24bit video cards are in A2000, A3000, A4000 and tower-ized A1200's, it's just not the same as the original Amiga A1000 and the concepts that the Amiga was based upon.

The tough question is, will any programmers take the plunge and write games and other software that takes advantage of SAGA, now that it is going to be open sourced? Gunnar should approach the guys writing the Hollywood programming language and work with them to produce a SAGA plug-in for Hollywood, to encourage more programmers to take advantage of the new features that SAGA provides. 16bit stereo audio is a step in the right direction too.

@BoingBear

Hollywood is made to run android, windows, AmigaOS, AROS, MorphOS, way do think they interested in supporting something, none standard that can't be used on the other platforms?

If Vampire people wont to be smart they support the Software standards we have AHI, RTG, this what allows developers to earn money is the moneymaker, for software developer, that is how they can possible reach many enough to uses, to buy there software.

Better classic hardware means it now possible to write software that can run everywhere. That is if people are not so suborn, that they don't see that.

GOLD3 bring-up. PAL via Vampire’s HDMI

You will have both RGB and HDMI enabled in same time on GOLD3 core. Note: This should not be confused to the Parasite adpater. HDMI cable is plugged to the Vampire's port, this is GOLD3 core feature. No Parasite adpater in use.

Vampire 600 V2 / GOLD3 bring-up - no more Turtle Mode

GOLD3 does not contain Turtle Mode for the stock a1200 speed. Here are a couple of WHDLoad games that will benefit of it. Audio and video comes through HDMI.

Note the A1000 is loading game from SD card.
the A4000 is loading game over Samba share, this is why the load time is slower.
the comparison is to show the ChipRam and AGA are working on the Gold 3 core even on an A1000

I'm still waiting to find out about the upcoming 1200 Viper board. Haven't heard a peep about it in ages.

@edponpon

You mean the upcoming Vampire 1200 card?

If so; I dont know if the standalone or the V1200 will arrive next; nor the timeline for it.

I think they are 100% preoccupied getting Gold 3 core complete.

GFX redraw is horribly slow. Other than that, OWB loading time is OK, video doesn´t show scrolling speed though.

Still not sure how creating an accelerator card is killing your first born...

No two accelerator cards are alike. Buy the one you like.

A very early Software Floating Point Unit bring-up for the 68k.

Its based on the work by Jari Eskelinen, which is being discussed here;
