@gregthecanuck

I mentioned the ASIC since I understand that's something the team seems to be thinking of (I think Gunnar mentioned it on the Apollo Core forum somewhere). But I fully understand the financial difficulties of getting a custom design fabricated without a lot of capital (which was also mentioned by Gunnar I think).

@WolfpackN64

It has been discussed a lot, but is a far-off possibility. There is a lot of mileage yet to be had with FPGA cores, though.

A 1GHz 68080 would be pretty sweet.

This adoom tests are good example how gunnar von boehn and his followers cheat people about performance of natami/apollo/vampire crap.

Year 2017, 17 years after mos release, almost 20 years after DOOM source release, and gunnar von boehn and his followers test ppc performance on wos with context-switch which slowdown ppc instead of use full ppc os and DOOM for this ppc os .

PPC vs 68k war? 68k lost. After many years of lies and cheating people, this crap 68k is still two times slower than almost 20 years old ppc cards for amiga, and even slower than some unreleased c= prototypes.

@ppcamiga1,

There is just 1 small problem, I can't seem to wedge a PPC card in my A2000. There is NO comparison, FULL STOP......

@gregthecanuck

I just download sortbench code from apollo website, compile it, and on my mac mini 1.3 GHz G4 get 50% better results than gunnar von boehn on 1.42 GHz G4.

OK, yeah, I get it, Gunnar has a bit of an attitude when it comes to PPCs.
AND yes there are just enough dumb asses that might think a 68K is going to out perform even a dated PPC rig, that this logic sells.

BUT, some of us just want it to improve the performance of 68K software, so we don't care about the hyped elements.

I myself, I'll still have my PPC hardware, and I'll still be using it after buying a Vampire.
Why can't you get used to the idea that some of us would like the best of BOTH worlds?

If it scaled that high, it would get some attention.
But as an ASIC would be a fixed device, the core would have to be pretty well debugged.

Cool - another point for comparison. Hop onto the Vampire forums and post your results (with command-line used to compile) so hopefully they can be added in to the knowledge base.

The Vampire DOES outperform some dated PPC cards. However that isn't the point of the product. There is nothing else to compare to except PPC since it is already the fastest 68K.

The point of the Vampire is to provide the fastest 68K classic experience possible. Period.

@ppcamiga1

for my test i have different results of sortbench on the same machine and different os.

example:
g5 quad osx leopard gave 2 gb/s
g5 quad linux lubuntu gave me 4 gb/s

sortbench is not the best for benchmarking...
in any way vampire v2+ will be a great add on on my a500 when available to officials reselkers here in eu

I suspect, you're from Phase5 - right?

@gregthecanuck

When running 68K code? Yep, that would be a close contest.
If you were to compile the same C code on both, that would get a little more interesting.
In any case, as you have pointed out this is about 68K code and legacy hardware compatibility.
If I had to choose between a Vampire2 and a 603 or 604 based accelerator, I`d choose the former.

Put the Vampire up against even a weak modern PC board like the A1222...it's toast.
BUT, again, we`re talking about running OS3.1-3.9, not 4.1.

So it's an apples and oranges comparison.

Let`s face it, the Vampire2 does make it worth considering investing in legacy hardware (yet again).

Would a Vampire2 allow speedy Deluxe Paint V animating while displaying 256 colours in PAL Hi-Res Laced but with the 24-bit backing store function enabled? On a 060 with 100MB+ of FastRam the AGA chipset crawls especially with the magnification feature while using a large brush! Saving/loading of projects is also unworkable with that feature ticked currently. Would I have to wait for the Vampire 1200 version for the AGA compatibility?

I have got a workaround see here, but it is very annoying dealing with this limitation!

@BigD

The current SAGA core doesn't include full AGA yet. It's only got chunky modes at the moment. The V1200 would be able to though.

-edit-
I found out on IRC, that planar modes are available now.

+1 & well said! I love using my 68K and PPC Amigas and applaud development in both camps

@klx300r

There are more of us straddling these camps than most people are aware of.
I didn't buy a PPC system to replace my Amiga, I bought it to supplement the Amiga.
That's why I don't get the friction, it isn't an or situation, it's an and situation.

Agreeing with sentiments of later posts. Have several OS4 machines and numerous Commodore era machines, some very much souped up. And I am very much enthusiastic about joining the ranks of Vampire users.

It's all Amiga to me. There is a specific set of favorite Amiga creative apps that run slower than I want on my classics and faster but not 100 percent perfect on an X1000.
And then there hardware banging programs that demand the real Commodore hardware.

And then there are new things like SketchBlock that demand the OS4 machines.

My plan is to enjoy it all.
