68k (in my case Aros 68k) is a lot of fun

There is most software available for 68k and not for NG (68k code base is 10x-15x as big as all NG platforms combined and that without games). I think Vampire/Apollo will bring a lot of fun back. The discussions NG versus 68k (mostly looking down) is specific to the amiga community. We should just have fun, if somebody prefers AmigaOS, Aros X86 or MorphOS then be it. But the rest enjoys the upgraded amiga hardware or uses UAE.

@Yasu

the reason why there are no discussions on the mentioned platforms is simple... there is no "NG" there, all are based on 68k or whatever was original used. All the discussions were because there were new versions of the OS running on different hardware and of course every OS was the only and right path like a religion. The others that were not believing the same were poor souls in the dark (the 68k fans) or non-believers. I of course exaggerate a little (but only a little ). The same cannot be found in most other retro communities.

I just imagine what would have been possible if all devs would have worked together on one platform

*sigh*

It really seems that the Amiga community is the only computer community that can't accept being left behind.

But that's just one half of the truth, isn't it? The Amiga community is also the only community that constantly gets told "things will get better this time" and that the next big thing is just around the corner - we just have to hand over money one more time, then we'll be showered with powerful hardware and amazing software, honest!

The X1000 was advertised as "the fastest AmigaOS machine ever! Dualcore!" not as "doesn't do DMA initially, doesn't support front USB, you'll have to buy two or three graphics cards until you have one that we might sell you a driver for one day, do not try to play video!, dualcore support? HAHAHAHAHA".

Which leads me to the other thing you forgot to mention: Blaming the community has a long tradition. We killed the original Amiga because we were pirating too much, we're too noisy and complain too much which drives developers away, we're too close-fisted (I heard that complaint from a developer just recently - I kid you not), we were too nasty to the Friedens so they could barely manage to release the useless Timberwolf sources years after they ripped us... ^h^h ported Firefox... Even if they lie, that's our fault, obviously - because TROLLS!, you know.

Yes, I know. Or rather; we ALL know. We have been going through the same topic to excess at least once a week for years now. And usually with the same people involved too. Death to the nay sayers contra death to the yay sayers. Isn't enough enough already?

I know, not exactly entertaining. I can see two ways this could change: Either the people who are complaining go away, or the vendors change their approach and their attitude.

This thread was started by actual customers - these are the people you really, really don't want to go away, IMHO. That leaves option #2. Maybe, just maybe - that's what we've all been waiting for since... forever?

Of course you do, you're very good at that - it keeps you busy so you don't have to see any actual problems.

While an Atari user might say "060 for an Atari? Wow, then I do a lot of neat stuff on it!" an Amiga user would say "Not fast enough! The PC is lot faster! And it's not cheap enough either! If this continue the Amiga community will die and my life will be meaningless!"

Maybe it's time to stop chasing the dragon and try to just enjoy what we got. If you are so pissed of that you can't enjoy what you are doing then maybe that is a sign that it's time to start doing something else instead.

I think the Amiga/Workbench community is perfectly happy with what they got, just like the C64 and ZX81 community.

That's the original, IMHO it's the other three (there are 1+3=4 options you know ) that may have become restless, the "NG" ones (MorphOS, AROS and AmigaOne/AmigaOS). Those are not into retro, but always wanted Amiga in a modern context, an evolution of Amiga. But the PPC turned out to be a dead-end, and the limitations of "Amiga" is hurting more by every year that pass and is preventing the evolution many dreamt of.

I think the current "NG" is a sinking ship. It's not retro, hence it's not what Amiga/Workbench people wants. And it has turned out to be not really "NG" either. I think more and more "NG" enthusiasts will either return to Amiga/Workbench, or hold on to the hopes of an upcoming truly evolved "MorphOS NG", or simply leave altogether.

The current "NG" is "stuck in the middle", it's neither Amiga/Workbench, nor is it the true NG many people wanted either.

I don't know about that. A lot of 68k users also seems to long for the next big thing, even if they don't care about the NG scene. It has bern like that ever since Escom took over. It's not until recent years that people seems to have settled down for retro and nostalgia.

@TRIPOS

A few weeks ago, I decided to backup all of my old Amiga disks. I bought a Kryoflux to use with my SAM460ex. After much frustration trying to get them to work together, and not getting much help from Acube or Kryoflux, I've come to the opinion that there is nothing like owning real Commodore Amiga hardware. All I'm trying to do is read disks. It was simple on actual C= hardware. It was made to do such a simple task. Now that I have NG hardware, I either have to give up any hope of reading my old disks, or buy more hardware (Catweasel, C= Amiga, or Individual Amiga Reboot).

I feel pulled in many directions. I like the idea of moving the platform forward, even if it is playing catch-up; yet, I also like how well the old systems work, even if they use old hardware and software. I used a combination of systems making my flying saucer animation. The easiest and fastest system I used while making that animation was not my SAM460, but a PC running WinUAE. I hated using Windows, but the emulation ran great.

I think you are correct in saying, "The current "NG" is "stuck in the middle", it's neither Amiga/Workbench, nor is it the true NG many people wanted either."

@Yasu

they are interested in improved amiga hardware and not different ISAs...

@Tripos

I agree that "NG" is neither modern nor "retro" in a kind most people wanted and want but I fear it is too late for a large scale modernizing today because not many developers left who will program software for a modernized OS that has to break compatiblity and needs new adapted and compiled software. MorphOS should have made this from day one, today I think it is too late. AmigaOS will not make any bigger changes anyway.
