@pavlor

Emulators are a classic application?
Only an Amigan would think that.
I don't even use them.

How about an application that isn't trying to emulate other hardware?

@Kronos

RAM in latter G5s is DDR2.
It is faster than the DDR used in AGP G5s.

Still not as fast as DDR3, but factor in other advantages and these results should be closer to parity.

... cache and cpu host made better emulations where the cpu is used in guest and guest gfx too.
fast ram help graphic emulations means games and 2d if the gpu host is not used for emulating.
fast cpu host made fast fpu guest too.

I am not sure I followed that, but considering the system you have on hand, you have more opportunity to test this than I.

Emulators are hardware demanding applications, in many cases well suited for benchmarking. However, as with any benchmarks, caution is needed not to compare apples with oranges (or as I say: in "Piru style").

@pavlor

I rarely run 68K programs anymore.
When I do, I usually use an Amiga.

I guess I am ready for the MorphOS ISA shift.

Tricky question btw.

A quick question re. "Piru style".
Do you have something against Harry?

No, not at all. Only his benchmarks comparisons based on different versions of various applications (lame, blender) are prime example of "how not to do benchmarks". Eg. blender 2.48 (OS4 version) gives only cca 50 % result of newer blender release on MorphOS (which itself is slower than even newer blender version on Linux) - all on the very same hardware. FFMPEG is another application with surprisingly great performance difference between various releases and so on. Such results aren´t directly comparable.

I fear for the demand level for the X5000 if a X1000 won't even sell for £900 second hand!

X1000 didn't sell on eBay

Admittedly, the reserve wasn't met but maybe a starting price of £600 might have helped?

@BigD

I generally don't bid on items with a reserve price.
Too much speculation as to the price.

If you think something has a value within a specific range, post it as a buy it now (at the higher end of that range) with the option to accept offers.

As to the X5000, I'm still interested.
The X1000 can not run MorphOS.

It's not like it's the first one...

Yes asking a price too high is the most common reason to things not selling, since high prices drives away demand like nothing else. Of course there needs to be a demand there in the first place. Maybe £600 would have made it easier to sell as you say. Or if you really want an auctions with bidders, why not start at £1? Indeed a bit risky if bidders are few, but nothing gets an auction going as a low starting price...

Talk is cheap. Why don't you contact the seller and "snap i up" then?

Honestly, I don't reaally trust your "benchmarks" very much, your methods are unclear, and some results goes totally against others I trust more and what to expect from that kind of HW. Under any circumstances, what we measure against (for better or for worse) is existing G4 and G5 machines, even thinking of mixing i5 into the picture is not serious. The i5 is in another dimension altogether.

Trance compiles native PPC binaries from 68k binary source code. The compiling process is so fast it isn't really noticeable, and a really pointless thing to benchmark.

Collection only severely limits the potential market and we don't know how close the reserve is to the £1699 price tag of the X5000. which people may prefer to wait for at this stage.

Exactly. Do you want a used system at that close to the price of a new one?

So, out of curiosity, what are used X1000s (not) going for these days? 500-600 EUR? That isn't so bad, I might be interested at that price.

£1699 is for the complete system, right? If I am not mistaken X5000 is going to be available as just the motherboard. Then it will be a lot cheaper. I am aiming for a complete system to guarantee functionality.
