Oh and a red and white checkered 'Boing Ball' is the height of sophisticated marketing and modern graphic design?

The thing that is the jewel in the crown marketing wise is the original Amiga font engraved on the Amiga cases; ITC Garamond Bold Italic. Without that and the iconic hard drive / floppy activity and power leds the Amiga would have had a lot less character. The Amiga Technologies font and red square cheapened it a bit but this one was also cool:

... I not sure where it was used as it was before my (Amiga) time

Pointless poll if they're forced to shut the whole distribution of OS3.1.4 down imminently

I'm not implying that. Although the boing ball has aged much more gracefully than the checkmark.

Well, this one is the only thing that actually works as a logo. Amiga Technologies did a good job on that.

Sorry but that one runs on an even higher cheese factor than the checkmark. Might look good on a local heavy-metal band's album, though.

a lot of cult stuff is laughable if you look at it closely. amiga check mark logo and the genuine type may belong in that category, but effectively they carry amiga reference and identity. and that boing ball doesnt look any better. the amiga technologies logo may actually intend to follow the principles of design in amore elegant manner but it is also somewhat half motivated and dull.

No-one has claimed ownership or protected the checkmark since Commodore, which is now soon 25 years away. In the meantime, the checkmark has been widely used by everyone, so at this point it qualifies as public domain.

No kidding. Some examples:

btw, this represents a change in branding, in case you didn't notice.

Masters of the obvious.

But I feel empathy only for the devs involved. The legal wrangling is shameful.

Well AmigaKit are free to use it, like everyone else. The minute they claim ownership, they will face a shitstorm. I can promise you that much.

Thomas and Olsen's work will inadvertently delay or even lead to the cancellation of the Tabor by potentially making Hyperion's 2009 settlement null and void.

The trial date is set for the 9th of December next year and Trevor has stated that the Tabor will be available before the proposed release of the A1500+ case in May.

If Hyperion lose against the Amiga parties then I expect A-EON to sue them too for lost earnings and needlessly hampering their joint venture selling OS4.X hardware.

I don't think there would be reasonable grounds upon which to sue and why sour the possibility of negotiating a mutually beneficial deal regarding the OS and branding.

It was not Hyperion cobtacring them, it was them contacting Hyperion.

It doesn't matter who initiated contact, Hyperion contracted the work out to a third party.

Ben and company would certainly know if the initiative were in violation of any licensing agreements and clearly Hyperion took the position that they were either entitled to sell the OS or released the product to test the terms of the agreement.

In the end, it's not the developers nor the development effort that are on trial here. And the saddest part of all of this is that the community gets punished once again through the withdrawal of the upgrade.

I motion to dismiss the last 25 years of Amiga history.

Faster? Nothing has been happening and most of these businesses have been dormant for years.

What the community really should do is sue all of the companies involved for breach of contract.

That's exactly why they released it. There was me thinking that they needed the cash injection but this is really just one big sick legal game to them and Olaf and Thomas are just feckless pawns not really understanding what all out litigation battle they've just unwittingly unleashed on the remaining Amiga companies! I look forward to the interview with Ben, Thomas and Olaf in 5 years time when there is nothing but ash and all that is left is Itec to sign for a mini-A500 Classic stocking filler license, with Jeri Janet Ellsworth or some other third party 'genius' hardware person providing the board to be out-sourced to China.

I don't know why you are placing so much emphasis on 3.14. The is just the latest in a series of actions by Hyperion that may or may not have breached the terms of the settlement agreement.
First was licensing 3.1 ROMs to Amigakit, second was licensing OS and ROMs 1.3, 2.04 and 3.1 to Individual Computers to bundle with accelerators and IDE boards and third was selling 3.1 as a digital download.

It's funny that you mention a retro style console. It has been my opinion for some time that such a product would be key to generating brand recognition and hype around the Amiga platform. If A-EON were legally able to put such a product on the market then it would also be a major cash cow for them which could be funneled into the PPC NG platform.

I have a whole plan in my head of what would be required to exploit this idea to it's fullest but since I have neither the money or the requisite licenses then I'll spare you the finer details.

@DiscreetFX,

Agree, Cloanto makes great emulation software, however I have real Amiga machines and would like to keep my OS up to date. Hyperion is the only one venturing down this path and hope to see more.

Companies commonly modernize or even fully redesign their logos, without losing reference to, or identity of, their product(s). Apart from nostalgia, I don't see any other reason why someone would like to stick with the checkmark logo. It's too gaudy, which makes it difficult to combine with other graphic material. At the same time it doesn't work all too well in black-and-white print, an aspect that needs to be accounted for in logo design. So apart from looking dated, it doesn't cut the mustard from a practical point of view either.

What I'm saying is that sticking to old graphic, or even paying for a licence to use it, doesn't make much sense to me. If someone's serious about carrying on with "things Amiga" on a business level, hiring a professional logo designer - which also means someone not biased by legacy Amiga aesthetics - would be money better spent IMHO.

For those who feel old Amiga logos are too drab & outdated & boring here is a truly modernized version. A future we can all look forward to?

Gotta disagree, the Amiga checkmark logo is where it's at. The Boing ball logo looks designed by a high-schooler. The checkmark logo just flows better.

I'm not sure how anyone with an eye for design would say that this:

Is better than this:
