| I really like AmigaOS 4.1 and it's funny to use. Btw, there are certain features that i would like to be addressed by OS developers. Mine is not an exaustive list. Maybe other user may add other things.
1) Save window and icon position, including sort order 2) Window's resize speed 3) Icons name too long (could be splitted in multiple rows?) 4) text rendering speed.
Any comment?
Thank you
P.S.
This thread is not intended to raise any kind of criticism to OS developers. Last edited by AmigaBlitter on 06-Feb-2017 at 12:09 PM.

Is it not a case of selecting 'Window>Snapshot All' like the classic versions of Workbench?_________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." John Lasseter, Co-Founder of Pixar Animation Studios |

Workbench windows? Can be done already since it was invented. (or version 2 at least). Obviously the drawer needs an icvon to save the settings in, (though default options can be put in the def_Drawer icon too).

If you a resizing a window with contents the speed it resizes depends on the contents, so if often application dependent.

I'm sure there's a commodity out there for that, though couldn't point you to it, off the top of my head.

Certainly text rendering can be abottle neck, but good application design compensates for this. What context do you find it to be an issue?

Yes, plus there are additional options in the RAWBInfo requester that make setting up and saving sort order, view by etc easier that trying to do it via a snapshot.

| The think I do not like is the naming of the windows. I mean, the window name is just the directory name without the complete path. This is quite annoying when you are copying something from two directories with the same name. Quite often I have to close all them to reopen and be sure which is it the right one. I would like to have somewhere (i.e in the bottom bar) the full path.

What exactly are you trying to do there, snap shot does work, exactly as advertised.
Also as I said some additional settings are available via the drawers icon information window. It's easier to set sort order via the icon than snapshot etc.

I forgot something...
5) navigate through directories using only one window. Clicking on a folder should open its content in he same window. This should save memory, i guess

One note, when changing settings in the disk icons (and possible drawer icons when the contents have already been displayed) can require a reboot to take effect, as the changes made to show by icon etc whilst using the workbench overrule the intial settings.
I'm not sure if there is a way to reset it without a reboot. 'Update' doesn't do it.

This is inconsistent with the snapshot concept, you can't have both.
However with a relatively simple bit of ARexx you could add a context menu option to open the drawer then close it's parent.Last edited by broadblues on 06-Feb-2017 at 12:43 PM.

You can make the parent window to auto close, even if that's not opening a new dir in the same window. Check the Workbench prefs. You can swap the behaviour holding ramiga key while double clicking an icon. _________________ Rock lobster bit me. My Workbench has always preferences. | - I would like to see Intuition doing more error checking and handling errors without crashing so easy - more reliability overall, reliability is far more important than any multicores, galliums or hand optimizations - higher level class based programming API, especially with devices instead of needing all that low level message and IO request passing, maybe vector port like approach could be used with devices as well

How are you going to copy files from one folder to another if you only have one window showing the contents of a single folder?? Drag-and-drop doesn't work very well if there is no place to drop.

If you think I've never used GEM.., why would you just mention GEM... with no further explanation about what it is? It doesn't answer the question of how you will drag&drop files on a one window system.

Of course! There is the Workbench!
If iI have to move 30 movies (DVDs that is) from one drawer to the other, I take them out from one Drawer, put them on the bench, open the other drawer and put them back in..
My hands are not big enough to balance 30 files with one hand and open a drawer with the other.. so will you tell me how you are supposed to balance them on the tip of a mouse(pointer)?
Com'on this is a retro forum, we should be used to stuff like this. Here everything should be a bit like building a house by hand instead of using all this fancy new machines which do the work for you! :DLast edited by Amigo1 on 06-Feb-2017 at 04:35 PM.

First, open the destination window and then:
1. Select the WorkBench menu "Window/Select contents" to select all files in a window, click on one of the selected files and then drag it to the destination window. All files will be copied.
or
2. Hold down the shift key with one hand; with the other hand select the files you want to copy, click on one of the selected files and drag the file to the destination window. All selected files will be copied.
I get the impression that some people in this topic are Amiga newbies or have never fully explored Workbench operation.

GEM uses one window to display contents of disks, drawers and subdrawers. "Close gadged" opens parent drawer (in the same window). GEM allows to open multiple windows - eg. one for A:, other for C:Games, another for C:Applications/Netsurf. It is nice and efficient windows management system.
I used GEM as an example, because it predates Workbench, but similar navigational file management is common in most OSs today.Last edited by pavlor on 06-Feb-2017 at 05:25 PM.
