Trevor must be pissed :( After all the trouble he had getting the X5000 produced, this is so much better!
It would really be awesome, but lets be realistic we don't even have decent multicore support yet (EDIT: I mean multicore support at all, forget the decent part!).

@virgolamobile

I think the second PCI-e slot should be x8, not x16. That's not much room for expansion cards. Doesn't even have on-board audio, so both slots are gone before you even think about a SATA card.

I don't think this machine would be usable in our application.

@virgolamobile

A one slot only motherboard is in development.

Raptos said that price will be a surprice

Ah, i realized that this is the one slot motherboard they've announced

HDMI audio works on Radion cards, USB audio is possible, and there are PCIe splitters.

Since Raptor Engineering is a hardware company I would not think they are not open to
producing further POWER9 motherboards with a different configuration. And, they are not the only company into POWER CPUs.

Ah, the future.

nah. this sort of thing just didn't exist in the time-frame when the X5000 was being developed. and, yes, it would be amazing if AOS4 ran on this machine, but *so* much of the power (hee hee) would be wasted. POWER9 is an absolute beast, and we'd be using a tiny percentage of its potential. now, if things improved on the software front....

@eliyahu

Single core performance of these CPUs is impressive by PowerPC terms. Eg. older Power8 2.92 GHz could score cca 25 SpecInt2006 with very conservative optimalizations. For comparison, T4240 1.666 GHz scores only 6.86 SpecInt2006.

One could say the same about x5000, x1000 etc.

not nearly to the same degree, but, yes, your point is taken.

True, but if you want good sized, healthy pumpkins don't plant the seed in a flower pot.

Yeah it's better, but AmigaOS4 is not really able to utilize the capability. The board+CPU would still end up at $1775 which isn't that far from the X5000 board+CPU.

AmigaOS 4 needs SMP support. Then even performance with the Tabor would double in many workloads. The bottleneck is the OS, not the hardware.

Also, if they had waited and used this board for the X5000, the system and OS4 port would have come out around the year 2022...

Again, even in single core/single thread applications Power9 is probably at least 3x faster than P5020 2 GHz.

@pavlor

the talos first bench https://openbenchmarking.org/result/1803284-AR-TALOS2RAP51

i know you dont like the hardbench benchmarks but just compare x5000 with threadripper ... benchs on single thread ...just for remember the threadripper have 32 T

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wshgd98gfny33ma/bench.xlsx?dl=0

ps: in sigle thread power9 is much faster then p5040

Would also love to see MorphOS run on that machine! Very nice! If only either of those had SMP support

@Madlax

I'm no morph man, but at one stage when I was cashed I emailed the morphteam offering a free power7 desktop machine to port to... They were cheap 2nd hand all those years ago. No they are not interested in POWER My guess is their poison of choice is of the sirinian kind, as was Beos :) long live workbench..

True but the improvements from SMP would come from just using existing hardware more efficiently, as opposed to developing an entirely new system based on a new CPU. Of course, I'm not against new hardware coming out, but AmigaOS is currently using so little of the potential of existing hardware which people have already bought and paid for, that trying to throw even more hardware at the problem doesn't seem very elegant or in line with Amiga thinking. With the X5000 and Tabor, at least 50% of the capability is being used. With Power9, this would drop to 25%.

Also, multi-threaded OS and applications would result in a smoother user experience so the benefit is actually greater to the end user than the improvement in raw CPU performance. User interfaces would remain responsive even under heavy processing, making things like web browsing feel much smoother.

@virgolamobile

8 DDR4 slots

Yes, yes. You will have hard times finding 8 DDR4 modules of 512 MB each one, just to fit the memory size OS4 barely handles.

1 x PCI-E 4.0 x16 slot
1 x PCI-E 4.0 x16 slot

PCI Express 3.0 currely is at its best on any common PC platform. 4.0 is the new thing and it will need quite some time to be useful.

2 x Gigabit Ethernet

You will almost surely need to develop a driver for them.

4 x USB 3.0

OS4 barely supports 2.0, there's the risk nothing you plug into them will be recognized.

1 x USB 2.0

At least this one might be good.

1 x RS-232 port

Are them still useful to anything?

$1400 (€1200)

The best X470 based motherboards for AMD Ryzen 2000 processors, sporting 3x 16-lanes PCI Express slots and 2 M.2 NVMe SSD card drives, with integrated audio, wi-fi and gigabit LAN, supporting up to 128 GB of RAM (all of them currently addressable by any 64-bit operating system) cost around € 300. Just add another € 300 of Ryzen 7 2700x processors and € 400 of a GeForce 1070, and you'll still have € 400 to spend on the rest of the configuration, at the same price you get this pointless POWER9 system.

Add to that a CPU of choice:
4 cores POWER9 $375 (€320)
8 cores POWER9 $595 (€504)
18 cores POWER9 $1375 (€1167)
22 cores POWER9 $2575 (€2184)

...and you'll have wasted your money. Good deal.

Serial is still often used as a debug port, much like Classic Amigas did, for firmware and other debug messaging, and control the system in a shell until GUI system is working.

There are now news about the SMP development on Amiga side.
Still Amiga OS 4.2 being developed?

No news about it
