I'd rather be able to use generic controllers/gamepads.

All I can find on the CPU is "8-core 1.8 GHz." It's probably an ARM SoC of some sort.

The CPU is probably not much faster than a Raspberry Pi 4 and 4 more cores is usually not much help for games (they could have embedded a Raspberry Pi 4 board inside and likely made it cheaper). The GPU may be the more limiting factor. Balancing GPU performance with power consumption is the hard part for modern consoles. The Raspberry Pi 4 has a low performance GPU but would it be enough to do these graphics for a fraction of the cost? The hardware is obviously set by this point so is it deceptive to not give the full technical specs?

Props for the game design ideas and looks though. Presentation is important for impulse buying and it needs to be polished considering the price. It will probably appeal to Intellivision fans but I expect it will be a harder sale in the console market where the performance/price is likely poor (I don't see any plans to turn it into a computer for any other markets). Maybe they are milking initial buyers and can drop the price a lot but that can backfire with early customers who feel like they payed too much.

@matthey

If it helps understand where he's coming from on this:

He's marketting games as "no sex" and "no violence" so that parents can enjoy some sense of security in what their children are doing plus there's a connection to oldtime "family nights" and how covid-19 might actually affect that in a positive way. (stay at home)

Intellivision fans, please feel free to add or correct my understanding.

I understand the concepts and sales pitch. Some of the ideas are borrowed from Nintendo consoles IMO. The games have a more retro look and feel though. They probably could have embedded a Raspberry Pi 4 in a commodity box with commodity controllers for less than half the price and still retained most of their presentation and concepts. They don't show users using the controllers so maybe that is more important to the concept than I realize, especially for Intellivision fans?

I'm a big Pi fan, so I could go for that. I think A Pi4 with an M.2 slot would make a nice retro gaming system.

Yeah, I like it. It's targeting a similar audience as the Wii did ten years ago.

Only an Agnus chip in your military spec case-less Amiga 500 will get to see and feel the splendor and opulent beauty of that carved oak desk. Enjoy the privacy and comfort in solitude. You’re a private scholar treasured like the fictional Superman. More Amiga wisdom will be spoken by you very soon.

I forgot about that -- thanks for reminding me!

Now that it's actually happened, I'm not so sure of my initial assessment. It's now plain that "Amico" is too close to avoid a lawsuit, but I'm less certain that the plaintiff will prevail in court. I suppose it will have a lot to do with precedent established in similar cases, with which I am unfamiliar.

There is a Friend OS which is a translation of the AmigaOS name. It's even "a modular, fully customizable OS" "primarily written in C for speed".

A few years back Friend OS had an Amiga-like GUI. Then a few months later, it suddenly had a Mac-like GUI. I've never heard why this happened.

@bison

FriendOS was also often mentioned as being "Amiga inspired".

Do you really not know why this all changed? (evil grin)

Friend DiscreetFX,

this beautiful, sophisticated concotion of words makes me wonder of it wasn't you hiding behind my not so missed clone.

Oh how does this contrast with your websiting endeavors, and your concise and repeates attempts to suggest I would be that Franko guy.

A split.personality indeed, and here's to hoping this brighter, byzantyne side of yours will surface more often!

Cheers with a finest crystal glass of Dom Perignon 1989 shining under the dreamy glow of the monumental chandelier hanging on my head as I type this very message,

Will this endless parade of names ever fade?
I am no one but myself.

I knew who Franko was, and no I am not him.
I didn't know who doomy is, I searched, and oh my friend I am so not him, too.

Signed with a jewel encrusted pen of rare splendor the value of which surpasses Hyperion's debts sheet,

I see him more as a 'will-o'-the-wisp'; an atmospheric ghost light said to mislead travelers by resembling a flickering lamp or lantern. He metaphorically refers to a hope or goal that leads one on but is impossible to reach, or something one finds sinister and confounding.

Modern science explains him away as bioluminescence from methane (CH4) produced by organic decay (basically flaming fart gas )! Source

It seems quite conclusive to me

On the contrary, I thought he came across as quite positively vibey, going from the last post. I didn't see it as doomy or gloomy. What is doomy is all those Amiga guys obsessed with Doom since it was ported. The Cadtrack of games that banged the nail in the Amiga gaming coffin. And now they worship the game. A fast accelerator in my Amiga? Wow, let's play Doom. Now, that's what I call Doomy.

@Hypex

Doom inspired Alien Breed 3D so for that I'm grateful. C&C was more damaging IMHO but hey we got Napalm eventually. But then you go to university and you seem to need Excel if you do science based subjects so the Amiga was always going to be supplanted there. Even so I coped with using the Uni Computers for my data processing in the early 2000s! Crazy to think now of all those late night trips to the computer room!
