No OS4 C++ programmers have expressed interest

Makes sense, as Wayfarer is written in ObjectiveC rather than C++.

@Trixie

No, only GUI and MorphOS parts are, webkit is cpp as it has always been.

@jacadcaps

Can you tell us if simd unit (altivec in ppc world) is used?
If yes, in witch part of code? in what % it impact on speedup?
And at last are there parts who can be optimized even further with simd code?

Do you plan to release specific cpu oriented binaries? I.e. G5/G4/G3/powerpc embedded.

Congrats for all your efforts, I will send a small donation for christmas

Pixman (that's the thing doing various graphical transformations in CPU - it paints Google Street View for example) uses Altivec, if available.

I did not benchmark pixman.

No. The difference in speed is below 1% and in most tests below the margin of error, so it really doesn't make sense.

@TRIPOS

Just a teaser about an upcoming release of Wayfarer:

This, obviously, isn't the same player as the one in Odyssey. As previously promised, there is HLS live streaming support so many radio stations work. Supported codecs are mostly same, but I've added Opus which appears to be more common these days. The code was optimized for low CPU usage, so you can comfortably listen to - say - tunes on Bandcamp and Wayfarer's audio threads will be unlikely to consume more than 1-2% of CPU (same test sites with Odyssey were using about 30% more CPU time on my reference 1.5GHz Mac mini).

That said, things are still a bit spotty - for example Youtube audio needs more work (although it does work on some pages). No release date yet, but stay tuned :)

And before you ask: 1.9 will NOT have video playback.

As said, this isn’t something that will come in the upcoming version, but at least media playback seems to be happening some time in the future!

@rzookol

I expected that, so I guess they ditched mui? For the web-browser?
Is there are problem with MUI?

@TRIPOS

Sound like a lot of low level improves as well, so maybe some x64 assembler parts that was not optimized for powerpc, so some improvements on algorithm. Look up partial translations, etc.

You guess wrong. Wayfarer is a MUI application.

Works great on first testing. Listenting to som eradio stream (WDR 1Live). cpu usage is very low.
What a nice surprise. Hadn't thought it comes that quick!

This is truly fantastic!

The fantastic progress of development is astonishing, and so is the quality of work. The developer really listens to suggestions and rapidly include many of the suggested additions and/or changes.

The browser is now becoming quite feature complete. Listening to audio streams from Soundcloud, bandcamp, radiostreams and even audio streams from Youtube, wow! Video playback is about the only big thing I miss now. But I bet that will come as well...

Fantastic!

Totally worth a donation!

Wayfarer is way more resource friendly than mentioned in the requirements. But trying to lauch it on the Efika fails: the 128 MB RAM is a little too less eventually. Maybe I can tweak the system a bit more. After booting up there is 78 MB RAM available. With about 90 MB free RAM it should at least start up.

Yes it is, 512MB went well on a Mac. But that was with 1 tab.

Does anyone know what dependencies Wayfarer has that aren't available on AmigaOS currently? I know it uses a objective C implementation wrapper that would need porting. Anything else?

Yeah, let’s get the port dependencies written or at least identified! I can’t imagine the author is happy it can’t be easily rolled out to all Amiga systems but we can’t expect them to make up for AmigaOS toolchain deficiencies.

It's not dependencies from the OS which is missing, it is dependencies in form of a motivated and skilled developer who wants to burn out making a browser for niche OS is missing on Amigaos4. Before there was Andrea with first OWB ports, then there was Joerg worry about it. And after that, there was no one, but on MorphOS Fab and now JadaCaps and co. But both oses the same, none of them provide something superior or super cool which not present in other OS. Objective-C is just the personal preferences of some MorphOS developers, and that all.

MorphOS for the current time just lucky enough to have Jadacaps worrying about, and that is one real dependency need it.

All that "objective C" mambo-Jambo it's of no problems, WebKit was and still c/c++, and what kind of GUI you build on top of it does not matter. It can be MUI, Reaction, damn Hollywood, be written in C, C++, Objective C, AmigaJective C, python, all kinds of crap languages: that all does not matter.

What matters, is the person who skilled enough and wants to lose a year of life on this, and then, later, somehow support it.

Don't try to find something like "morphos have objective-C, and because of it they have Wayfarer". NO! Morphos have Jadacaps for now, and Piru, and some others. That what they have Waywarer.

That all the same can be done on AmigaOS4 right now, just with C/C++, be reaction or mui, no problems. The problem is the find person who wants to burn out a lot of time on it, and have in end from users millions of requests and suggestions about GUI/UI and gazillion bug-reports about PPC-only issues in javascript, or about sites which never will work on big-endian machines. And that person should be skilled enough.

In other words, clone Jadacaps so the clon will be amigaos4 fan, and there will be the same new browser, and no limitations will make things stop.

MUI framework,

MUI5 on os4 the same as morphos ones almost 1:1 (i know it as I test it all the time and compare it with morphos one). Yeah, kind of cloning, but at least it almost the same.
