@hlt

Sorry to drop in on a discussion about X5000, but it reminds me of similar discussions from the past.

Back in the day, we had similar discussions regarding FFS, SFS and JXFS (JXFS was not bootable).

Getting back to the present and your situation ...

If you are a regular user, then you may have to choose SFS or FFS until NGFS is released in a more stable useable form.

@all

This situation is sadly hilarious.

If NGFS is not available to the average X5000 user, why claim it is so great?

Anyways ... that's a discussion for another time.

Because greatness is defined by being great, not by being available.

Actually, it should be available to the average X5000 user, but not available to everyone else like people with an X1000.

Hi guys,

Despite what NutsAboutAmiga claims, NGFS is the new standard for AmigaOS (replacing FFS). It is a mainstream product, "finished". There are no outstanding bugs or work to be done.

Third-party file systems like SFS still work to some extent, but as they are no longer maintained, they slowly fall behind. There is a suite of tests for file systems that are designed to run with the latest DOS, and neither FFS nor SFS can pass all the tests. That is not surprising, given that they were designed many years before the DOS API was defined.

NGFS was made to be bootable from the very first, but that depends on AmigaBoot (installed in the firmware of X1000, X5000 and A1222). On older Sams or AmigaOnes, you have to boot an FFS partition first, but all your other disks/partitions can be NGFS if you wish: they will appear as soon as AmigaOS is booted.

The version of NGFS supplied with the original X5000s is a very old one, as you know. IIRC it was V54.34 (?) and its DOSType is "NGF\00". The current version of NGFS is 54.96, with DOSType "NGF\01". The DOSType was changed last year (the only change so far that made the existing disk formats obsolete). If/when you update to the current version, you will have to copy all your NGFS data to another partition, reformat the old one, then copy it all back again. It's well worth the effort.

The current version of NGFS needs the latest AmigaBoot to be bootable. If you have an old version of AmigaBoot on your X1000 or X5000, then the latest NGFS won't boot on it. However, most X5000 owners out there still boot from FFS, so it's not a big problem.

Old versions of SFS won't run on the X5000, but I'm told that the versions supplied with Enhancer software have been modified to work. I haven't tried them.

Please don't ask me about who owns what, as I don't care. I wrote NGFS back in 2012 and I have promised it to Hyperion, so there. If anyone owns an X5000 with the old NGFS and wants to update to the latest NGFS, then PM me and I can help you upgrade. It is not yet publicly available for other platforms.

@tonyw

Thank you Tony. I appreciate your detailed explanation.

I sincerely hope that someday NGFS will be publicly available for all platforms.

This 👆

It would be nice if the slb could be updated so other machines could also boot off ngfs. Maybe there is a way of putting Kickstart on ffs and the rest of OS4 on ngfs? Might make updates a bit awkward though.

@Chris_Y

We'd all like to be able to update slb, but the original dev has taken his bat and gone home without leaving us the sources.

Bloody politics.

Well, that's exactly what I've been doing offlate: distributing all available OS-versions (2 to be precise: OS 4.1 FE and OS 4.1 FE upd 2) into a number of partitions, these being:
- KickStart
- ExtSYS
- OS_4.1 FE
- OS_4.1 FEu2

As the name may suggest, KickStart has everything and only stuff you normally find in SYS:KickStart.
ExtSYS is my hobbyhorse and holds everything that is indepentent of any version of the OS. Items it holds (a.o.): TBImages, Env-Archive and Fonts.
Both OS 4.1 FE and OS_4.1 FEu2 now take less then 70Mb in size, although both partitions are 260Mb or so (big grin here).

And all is still working... Amazing!

@tonyw

will you also provide ngfscheck ? I once contacted you on Hyperion forum to get an updated version since my NGFS partition was giving me errors, which you did but NGFScheck (from the original X-5000 prerelease CD) could not work with the update so errors could not be fixed.

so I ended up switching to SFS/2 (bear in mind that you still need one NGFS partition to be able to boot on another FS on a X-5000)

Just make a soft link from SYS:Kickstart to where your kickstart files are and you won't have any problems with AmiUpdate AutoInstall scripts.
