XawTV shows the image properly when set to grabmode display (i.e., not using overlay). Also, the overlay in full-screen mode does not cover the full-screen. It's worked like that with every Linux kernel I've used since installing the TV-card. The disadvantage of grabmode display is that a noisy signal can cause the entire machine to lock up.

I'm a little bit confused now. Do you want to say that overlay for TV cards never worked at all with Linux on the A1 (even with the non DMA fixed kernels)?
