Site draft here: AmigaWorld FreeCiv Site

Site in game stats here:
In Game Stats

OK Strategy fans, nows your chance, I have to do some proving of FreeCIv on the AmigaWorld.net server to ensure running it does not cause undue burden of the server. For this I need your help.

Download Freeciv from http://www.freeciv.org for your computer.

For classic Amigas:

FreeCiv Amiga 1.14

FreeCiv Amiga Hires Tiles

TODAY The version you use must be 1.14.0. This is important because client and server MUST match.

Once a game is running

( and these will be booked in advance on here to run from a specific time )

Start it up. In the connection options panel type in "amigaworld.net" as the server and click connect.

if it sayes "connection refused" then the server is not running a game yet.

If not, wait a while because the administrator will be waiting for participants to join. Once the game has started, enjoy!

Reply to here if you are interested in playing freeciv and also if you are willing to take part in the big launch on Sunday 16th 1pm GMT.

Neat - something Amiga users can play!

Good job Dave

I loved to play freeciv on my 060, but now on my 030/25 its no fun.. and i hate the windoze version.. maybe i should install linux again..

Its a shame that there is no link to the 1.14 version of freeciv on freeciv.org, you can download it from sebastian bauers freeciv page: http://home.t-online.de/home/sebauer/freeciv.html

With a bit more digging around we found 1.18 stable for the Amiga!

Id like input on which version to make the server then.

@ DaveP

Although I dont know if i will have the time to join the game i suggest using server version 1.14(amiga freeciv 1.18) as its the version which is also used on the freeciv pub servers at the moment. I have played several times with this version(on os3.9 and linux) and i had no problems with it.

@all

If you find the isotrident/hires tileset too slow on your computer or you think its annoying to play with it, you can download the Neotrident tileset from aminet which is faster than the isometric tileset and better looking than the original trident.

Note the change from 1.12 to 1.14, this allows a much better
client to be used with sound, after we checked all versions could be used by our target audience

Games will be kicked off at 1pm GMT on the Sunday after the previous game finished. So if the previous game lasts 1.5 weeks the next game will start on the second sunday.

Sound fair?

Is there a way to get an older version installed using apt-get? I have 1.14.0 installed right now and when I tried it, I naturally got a message saying that the versions didn't match up.

Just a reminder, that the match starts at 1pm sharp.

Given how popular the service has been over the last 24 hours ( 8 players per game helping test the server out ) we might move it to daily if the trend continues - with matches running timed for convenient hours Australasia, Americas and Europe.

You need client 1.14 ( 1.18 on Amiga ) NOT 1.14devel, 1.14beta 1.14.1 you need 1.14

Pop along to #awfreeciv on irc.amigaworld.net using an irc client half an hour before the match to meet the other players

The match results will be tabulated and posted in a hall of fame.

In 2004 I am going to offer as a prize an AmigaONE XEG4 motherboard prize to be awarded in April 2004 for the top player aggregated from all the League games starting from January 2004. So get your practise in now!

Here are some proposed rules, comments are welcome on that too!

2004 Competition Rules:

1. The player must be a member of www.amigawold.net and have made at least 10 unmoderated on topic posts since joining.

2. Only games designated as "League" games will be counted in the results.

3. Top Player criteria to be decided in consultation with FreeCiv experts on the best measurement, will be posted here no later than Jan 1st,2004. A points system will be established and published on the site.

4. Any cheating will disqualify the winner.

5. You do not have to play in every league game, but the more you play chances are the better you will be and the more league points you will earn. There may be multiple categories.

6. The prize is an AmigaONE XE/G4 motherboard populated with 512Mb of RAM. Or if a model has superceeded this, an equivalent AmigaONE model to the value as set on January 2004.

7. The main prize will be awarded in April, 2004, to the league winner.

8. The prizewinner must have a valid postal address.

9. Further prize money and awards can be donated to the site, details in January 2004.

10. In the absence of any winner given no one has taken part, the motherboard will be donated to a development group of AmigaWorld.nets choice.

Sign up for the 2004 league games by sending an email to davep@amigaworld.net with your full name, address and amigaworld.net username as well as the username you intend to reserve for use with freeciv on AmigaWorld.net.
