| The TOS has been updated to help reduce clutter in the threads and to make amigaworld.net a more enjoyable place for everyone.
New rules have come into force, especially for trolling and flamming.
The staff may issue a warning, ban or account termination if they believe, in their sole discretion, that you have violated any of the terms of this TOS, or that you have engaged in any behavior that the staff believes, in their sole discretion, is harmful to the operation of Amigaworld.net.
The disciplinary proceedure for breaking TOS is as follows. (note: some offences may warrant an instant ban/termination, where this is the case it will be indicated in the TOS)
1. Warning 2. Final warning 3. 1st ban 7 to 14 days 4. 2nd ban 30 to 90 days 5. 3rd ban 180 days 6. Account termination

Is it really necessary to have four levels of temporary ban? Surely one would suffice.
I would also like to see a ban on libel (firstly, to teach people how to treat others, and secondly to keep your own (the site's) noses clean). Such comments as "xxx is a fraud" or "xxx did this or that" should not be allowed, no matter who the target is. A discussion forum like this should not be a vehicle for insulting others, whether it is true or not.

Davey can answer if he chooses, but I'm a strong supporter of consistency. If person A is restricted for 90 days as a first offense Y, and person B is restricted for 14 days for (possibly similar) offense Z, that's bogus, inconsistent, and IMO, unfair.
Also, regarding the number of them...think back, and I'm sure you can recall a few threads and/or News items, that certainly could have wound up in restricting or banning permanently some normally contributing members of AW, if for example, the 'levels' were to be 30 days -> 90 days -> banned.
I'm unsure how this will work out, personally, but hope it can at least be applied consistently and fairly. This is not meant to, and should not, disallow disagreements and/or sane discussions, regardless of the viewpoint, but hopefully will either relieve all of us of some of the personal attacks going on and thread derailments, and either help to nudge some (of whichever 'beliefs') into being more civil to one another, or letting them reap what they sow.
*shrug* The above 'levels' were a result of some debate, but they are now part of the TOS, for better or worse, and we (Staff) will do the best we can to enforce them, hopefully in a sane, rational matter.

You're right 4 is too many, but plent of choice isn't necessarily a bad thing so I've now condensed them into 3 levels, 2 with ranges. We (the staff) will use our discretion when issuing bans.

If we talk about future/vapourware hardware projects and don't rely on personal attacks I think it's ok to say thinks like "boxer was a fraud" "Amigaone 1200 from scena was a fraud" or "ACK did not released the powervixen on 2005 as he promised".
If you mean personal attacks I agree moderators shouldn't allow that.
But we are free to have an opinion and if we think that something is vapourware I don't think that saying what you think about a vapourware product is a blasphemy.Last edited by Crumb on 26-Oct-2006 at 08:57 AM.

Agreed, but a lot of potential legal hassle (certainly in UK and Europe) could be avoided with simple phrases like "in my opinion" and "allegedly".
btw Boxer wasn't a fraud - just never completed and possibly poorly managed. Iwin was a fraud. Allegedly.

| 1st Warning Quote:
Flame/Attacks: Do not flame! Flaming refers to derogatory, abusive, threatening, sarcastic, rude, or otherwise mean-spirited messages directed at members/users. Be cautious when using sarcasm and humour. Without facial expressions and tone of voice, they do not translate easily over the Internet in posts and may be perceived as flaming. Report the flame posts immediately to an Amigaworld Team Member so that the situation can be dealt with immediately. A warning may be issued depending on the severity of flame/attacks. |

you might want to correct this bit under trolling:
"Repeat offenders may incur an instant banned."
I still think "Blasphemous" should be replaced with "Religious".

I think we need a thorough test of the system. All disciplinary procedures must be tested for effectiveness.
So d0c, you volunteering?

Is there anything in print regarding "TOS" in relation to irc here? Differentiation of rules regarding the public channel #amigaworld vs any other channels?

I disagree. It should stay "Blasphemous."
What, exactly, would constitute "Religious"? Say, if someone mentioned in passing, in a list of interesting trivia, that Easter started out as a pagan holiday and was converted into a Christian holiday, or mentioned this in a discussion on how things sometimes change their meanings over the years... would that be considered "Religious" and get the user banned?
In any event, I'm betting they likely talk religion all the time on the Free For All sub... (I haven't ventured in there very often... )
