@Akiko

Indeed. Apple is never comming back again.

The Core 2 Duo rulez and Intel is going to sell the Quad Core 6600 for 266 dollar at the end of this year so let's see a PowerPC proc do that.

And the talk about HDMI ... well there is not even a secured signalway inside the OS, or even a legal DVD Player SW as it has to be to use this standard. So this should be first and could still be handled with some Upgrade GFX card, perhapes.

You are confusing HDMI with HDCP. HDMI is a connection system that carries digital video and audio data (unlike DVI, which is video only). HDCP is the nasty content-protection system. HDCP is totally seperate from HDMI, and infact HDCP can be implemented over DVI links.

DVI connection of GFX cards btw are sole property of the electronics of the card. No need for a driver diffrent from one for VGA.

No, that's totally wrong. The graphics driver needs significant modification to implement DVI output. I can say this with 100% confidence, because I was the guy who added DVI support to the NVidia and ATI drivers used by Amithlon.

If I may chip in here... at work we use two and three monitor setups on our PCs, and the way we do this is by using PCI gfx cards. I can't remember what the model of the card is (only the IT guys are allowed to open the computers),

but they're powerful enough to run Vista Glass with all the bells'n'whistles (and they have the "works with Vista" logo on the box - those are new cards!).

Note that there are two Vista certification e.g. "Windows Vista Capable", "Windows Vista Premium Ready".

"Windows Vista Premium Ready" needs "Support for DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum), Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel."

PCI with atleast 128 MB on-board ram and Radeon X1300 (e.g. VisionTek Radeon X1300 PCI with 256MB on-board ram) should be able to run Aero Glass.

AGP8X/PEG8X/PEG16 is recommended if on-board/on-chip graphic memory is at 64MB i.e. shared system memory + dedicated video memory model. This type memory model (e.g. ATI's Hyper-memory) dominates the low-middle end DX9c GPUs in laptop market.

Anyway, in http://www.techspot.com/review/15-visiontek-radeon-x1300-pci/page2.html
There are some performance difference between PCI vs PCIe.

@Hammer

Thanks for the info, on Monday I'll take a peek and see. I don't know how well the cards would do in a game (I might get fired if I try that particular experiment ) but I can do the win-tab window cycling gimmick and it seems reasonably fast.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Ok, you got me on this one! My only appology: lazyness
But you could also see it as that there is not too much thinking and concern about this TAX when buying a TFT as I bought two for Christmas last year and both have DVI (1 19" and one 20" 16:10)

I have a strong believe that most customers will buy LCD with DVI as it is still integrated in most LCDs on the market at least an additional port.

Additionally the import taxes will be sooner or later compensated by the drop in production cost (or perhapes has been already) as always

aehem... well, ok. Your word on that. But I don't know why everybody in the Linux area complains about NVIDIA and ATI Driver being binary only, if it is so easy to "significantly" change them.

Aehem2... No I'm not?

1. Even if I would have confused it, would I find it more confusing and irritating that people arguing here don't see the difference between HDMI and DVI
Wikipedia entry HDMI
Wikipedia entry DVI

and the completly different places of use of these connectors, that is Home Entertainment Systems and computer hardware. Yes, the last being what we are talking about here. That's what I wanted to clear up, and what I did, hopfully.

2. The main reason they came up with HDMI was the copyright flag and DRM issue. And even if it wasn't: Why should I pay more to have a HDMI output on a machine that has absolutly no SW (yet) for getting DVD or other homecinemalike visual media over it to a display in the first place.

I repeat myself: this can be done with a GFX-Card Upgrade, when there is software that needs it, and user that want it.

aaand... all this is completely OT, I would say

@CodeSmith

GigaCube RX1300-LP128H uses PLX Technology's PEX 8111 PCI Express-to-PCI Bridge chip, thus allowing the Radeon X1300 VPU (with native PCI Express interface) to work on mainboards with PCI slots only.

If you don't have the privileges you can't do that... I know it because... I don't have the privileges
