Cost of a *complete* OS4 Sam440 *system*

I was wondering what the cost of a complete (fully functional) Sam system would be. The costs are calculated assuming that you connect the parts yourself, rather than buying a pre-build system (which do not seem to be available yet).

I looked at AmigaKit's prices, and it seems they are (perhaps unsurprisingly) pretty identical to ordering direct from ACube. So for Sam440 & OS4.1, I use AmigaKit (UK) prices.

* Sam440 = £440 (don't you love coincidences?!)
* OS4.1 = £100
* P&P = £9 (so I have been told)
Total = £549

Of course, you need to add the price for a case/psu, SATA HD, SATA DVD-RW drive & SATA cables on top of that:

* I already have a case, but ACube sell a suitable Micro ATX case for £53 (inc VAT, but excl P&P). Not sure if AmigaKit sell anything.
* A decent DVD-RW drive = £18
* An 80GB Seagate HD = £25
* Two cheap SATA cables = £6
* P&P = £4 (may need to be higher due to the Micro ATX case)
Total = £106 or so

So a complete system comes to about £655.
(edit: increased price by £3)

(Note: Please leave unrealistic complaints about price out of this thread, never mind that it is rather cheaper than what AmigaOne & CyberPPC systems have sold for recently.)

@ChrisH

The configuration that I'm going to buy:
- ModeCom Feel-302 - ~40 euro
- External 120W PSU - ~55 euro
- Sony / NEC (Optiarc) DVD+/-RW AD-7590S-01 bulk black slim (SATA) - ~50 euro
- PCI riser - no idea :)
- OCZ 2.5" SSD 32 GB (Serial ATA) - ~140 euro

I guess that is a quite decent config

PS. ... I'm assuming that there's no difference for AmigaOS4.1 if it uses SSD or mechanical HD...

I'm just wondering if the SAM has similar problems to the u-A1 in terms of compatibility with certain power supplies.

Does anyone know if the SAM has this problem or will it work with any PSU?

Kind regards,

Francis.

@all with well thought out questions for Acube Systems

Please use the thread:

ACube Systems

Part of the goal here is to assemble all legitimate questions in one central location to aid both Acube in answering and to aid users in having all factual information in one convenient thread.

Thank you.

@dreamlandfantasy
I would guess that SAM should be better designed (certainly seems it so far), but you may find that some PSUs (particularly of higher wattages) won't turn on, because the SAM doesn't draw enough power for them to realise a machine is connected! At least, that is what I read on an AW.net thread.

Good news AmigaKit! Remember to make the system configurable, so it can be specced out to the maximum spec possible!

Second that Earthling! It should definately have the look and feel of an Amiga product and should not just be a standard piece of kit!

@ALL:
Here in Luxembourg, we propose 2 complete Sam Systems.

You can see it here :
Configuration Mini Sam with Amiga OS 4.1 included
Configuration Sam High Storage with Amiga OS 4.1 included

We have one Mini Sam configuration available for demonstration at our shop if you want (without AOS 4.1 for the moment).

@Radov:
For the Nec/Sony, pay attention at the fact it doesn't use a standard serial ata connection for alimentation ! You'll need a ConvSlimSata adapter in order to be able able to use (like in our Mini Sam Configuration)

Amiga OS 4.1 is included in the displayed prices (prices are taxes included).

Thanks to ACube for going on Amiga Adventure ;)

If you are prepared to pay for a "unique Amiga product", then I am sure that AmigaKit et al will oblige!

@Earthling

I quite like my psile case. It's a little bigger than it needs to be and is a bit more expensive but I like it never-the-less. The good people at ACube even built the system for me.

@TrevorDick
Thanks for the Psile link - very nice looking, and about the same form factor as my Shuttle PC. I see what you mean about "a bit more expensive" though - about £150 for the case & DVD-RW drive (and no PSU...).

@ChrisH
I had forgotten that some PSUs (including the one in my mini-ATX case) only have Molex/LP4 power plugs, but SATA drives usually need SATA power plugs. Therefore one needs to add the cost of two adapters, which means about £7, bringing the total to £662.

For anyone intending to build their own Sam440 system, ACube's manual should be really handy:
http://www.acube-systems.biz/download/sam_manual_0.7.pdf

For a start, I hadn't realised that there are internal connectors for 3 USB ports, which will be great for my case.
