I knew it would come to this. Bad move by Commodore USA. To ask anything of Amiga Inc is just stupid. Amiga Inc has done so may things wrong in the past that they have no problem doing one more thing wrong.
They should have sticked to the Commodore name. I can see now how much sh***t starts flying against AROS, But they wanted tho re-live the "curse" i guess. Commodore going down in seconds...counting..10...9...

| This is so bizarre, where to start?
This is essentially a rebranding and bundling enterprise.
Where is the profit going to come from? Where is the value going to be built from? There will not be any IP owned by this company except for some custom case designs.
Relying on an open-source operating system to sell hardware with razor-thin PC margins in a slow economy to a niche Amiga hobbyist market?
The following statement in the press release is what makes me believe the company is delusional, in my opinion (underlining added):
Quote:
"With the monumental strides that AROS has recently achieved, we realize the importance of accelerating this progress with funding that will enable this project to rapidly move forward and take it's rightful place at the forefront of desktop operating systems" |
My first reaction is that someone came upon a decent inheritance but is blowing it big-time. Time will tell how long until the money/enthusiasm runs out and the harsh realities of the PC marketplace kick in.
A shame.

They are not going for a niche market, they are trying to "mainstreamizise" it. You and I and Commodore USA all know a company cannot prosper on amiga market that is today alone. Several thousand users at the most. Why is that so hard to understand to some other people is beyond me.
They will be selling Win/Linux powered Commodore PCs/netbooks... and I'm guessing most of their profits will be coming that way. The Amiga business is probably a long term pet project into reviving the brand with some new ideas.

I kind of see their destination, but worry about the first steps they have taken so far. That website is an abomination. At the moment they don't have an AROS distro to put on their machines. Plus, actually they don't have a machine.
Maybe it would have been more effective to get some capable (Industrial) Designer dude doing some work on a product/case/CI/AROS-Workbench-theme whatever, and when stuff looks kind of presentable, do some serious and professional presentation on your website or whereever.
Well, that's at least how it works in the rest of the world.
What we get is some ten year old JPGs stolen from various websites thrown unto us.
Amiga curse in full effect. I call it..
Shaking my head in disbelief. Honestly..

I'm quite sure they'll be accelerating progress and moving forward! Towards another scam and embarrassment.

It seems that a bad website comes with the territory. I've yet to see something modern and nicely built by either hyperion(OS4) or a-eon(X1000). MorphOS and AROS, ironically, although not being "official" amiga products all have much better websites. _________________ The shadow is cast on who you used to be, Let me set you free. | @All I think roughly this is the point when everyone should admit, it's one of the major advantages of MorphOS (and Pegasos for that matter), that it has nothing to do with Amiga name-wise...

You guys made my day. Back when I read the original Hyperion/Amiga Inc/Amino agreement I noted that there was nothing to stop Amiga Inc from producing Amiga branded PC using someone else's operating system.... |

| Lets not worry too much about this seeming disaster where Amigas now have to be called AmigaOnes and PCs called Amigas. Crazy indeed.
But anything involving Amiga Inc is doomed to failure very soon. How long before Bill McSue'em has a go at this new Commodore. Maybe we need a Poll
Which is not the real C= anyway that was sold to PC firms long ago and has nothing to do with Amiga for a long time, even in the classic days.

Can you show us any pictures of real hardware/software being tested... I think it's in the best interest of the whole amiga community and Commodore USA to establish some credantials so we can discuss this in a civilized manner(i.e. without vapourware and scam accusations posted in every third post). I think it would help greatly. _________________ The shadow is cast on who you used to be, Let me set you free. Come now, come take my hand, then you'll understand, We'll go to that forbidden land. |

+10.
It's really hard to follow "brand". Do you buy "Amiga" computer that does not run "AmigaOS" or "not Amiga computer" running "AmigaOS"?

NICE
I wanted to post something on the BUG forum but forgot. I think croatian amiga fans will be mostly happy with the development. And BUG webiste/forum and magazine are widely read in the whole ex-Yugoslavia region(20+ million people). _________________ The shadow is cast on who you used to be, Let me set you free. You can't really earn (much) money with a standard PC hardware in a niche market - it's the software and/or the operating system, but, oops, AROS is free... hmmm?!? What now?

I am not knowledgeable about the used licences here, but isn't there the possibility to sell a custom AROS distro? Thought I have read that somewhere...
Someone care to enlighten us? |
