Well, I need serial ports since some of my retro projects don't have USB capability.
And serial also makes a good debugging port.

Further, one 6809/6309 board I have uses a Phillips quad UART (you would not believe how much better that is than the old 6850/6551).

The P50X0 has serial ports, but even on systems that don't support RS-232, I can add it or convert USB ports.

What I haven't used in several years is a parallel interface.

Although for hacking and simple control projects they still have some uses.

I think I have a few printers with that interface, but most of my print out go to a networked HP M401.
The biggest problem I had with parallel was the limited length the cables would run.

Then again, USB doesn't like long cables either.
