Well Hyperion favours plain "AmigaOS".

I bet!

But you don't have to make it more complex than this:

1. Cloanto owns the OS for Amiga's, and they market it under the name Workbench and nothing else!

2. Hyperion publishes and markets "AmigaOS [4]" for AmigaOne's (and a version for Amiga's with a PowerUP PPC card, but that is so useless that you might as well forget about it ).

= Workbench for Amiga's. AmigaOS/OS4 for AmigaOne's and PowerUP.

Heh.

Anyway, just linking back to the answer to the question this thread is "supposed" to concern:

it's worth what someone will pay for it (/end debate)

We could have closed this thread after post #4, but no....Heh.

#6

Correct. I think it's better to move to the other thread, so we don't pollute this one.

OK, but in other threads you've talked about "lineage" and legal successors.

Lineage = source

Legal successor = one who has Amiga in name (legaly)

Oh no, not again, what is an Amiga...

Because people prefer(ed) to write the extended version, like Commodore did.

There was more commonly used abbreviation... AmigaOS.

I simply like you logic: AmigaOS (4) for Amiga is useless, so nonexistent.

As I wrote above, without sources, "Workbench" by cloanto is only new distribution of same old components.

By early 1990s? That would be surprising.

The product was "Amiga", a combination of hardware and OS. OS was called Workbench what was referring to the desktop. I have just looked in a old magazine, they are offering kickstarts 2.04, 3.1 and so on + installation disks. As OS and hardware was tightly connected I do not think that anyone saw the OS as something different.

You don't contradict anything I say, so I agree!

It's all history though and doesn't really matter today, where the situation is like this:

1) Workbench is the OS for Amiga's
2) AmigaOS/OS4 is for AmigaOne's and PowerUP

"AmigaOS" or "Amiga OS" or similar must be a invention in later times

No product called "Amiga OS" was sold by Commodore. The first product that explicitly used the "Amiga OS" name was the 3.1 upgrade for old Amiga's that was only released after Commodore's death.

Amiga Technologies, Amiga International, Amiga Inc, Haage&Partner and Hyperion used this name for various products.

Today only Hyperion does, for their AmigaOS 4 for AmigaOne's and PowerUP.

Cloanto however owns and publishes the OS for Amiga's, and they use the name Workbench (which is also a registered Trade Mark owned by Cloanto).

No in the magazines they simply say OS 3.0 or OS 2.0

Trader sold "Kickstart 3.0" and so on

Desktop was called Workbench, then you had Amiga DOS, Arexx and so on

nothing about "Amiga OS" and similar. If you have any proof that this phrase was used in Commodore time and short after then show it to me.

I will cite my reply in the AmigaOS Twenty-Five news thread:

Name "AmigaOS" (or more often "Amiga OS") is commonly used from early 1990s (look at usenet discussions from 1990/1991). See eg. this thread from May 1990. Here Dave Haynie speaks about "Amiga OS" in May 1989. To cite also Andy Finkel (December 1986): "let's discuss the misuse of the term AmigaDos to describe the
entire Amiga OS. That should be interesting, yea, that's the ticket."

Enough?

@Rob

Commodore died before any AmigaOS 3.1 was sold as a stand-alone product (a custom version for CD32 aside). It's as simple as that.

They had the product in the pipe line though and the publisher Village Tronic had manufactured stock that went for sale AFTER Commodore's bankruptcy. That's why you see Commodore's logo. They were considered "Pirate Copies" by some officials, since they generated money that AFAIK never reached the IP owners. Bankruptcies can mean a lot of money lost for some people/companies, and I suppose Village Tronic had spent money for production that they simply tried to recover. I don't judge anyone, it's two decades ago.

Anyway, that's all ancient history now. Today it's like this:

1) Workbench is the OS for Amiga's
2) AmigaOS/OS4 is for AmigaOne's and PowerUP

I have only "Workbench 3.0" and the books for Arexx and DOS. No mentioning of "Amiga OS" anywhere.

hmm that were private discussions, not "official". On other occasions you are insisting on "official" so be consequent there

"AmigaOS" has two things that connects it with that time, that "Amiga" is part of the name and that it is propably based on the old sources. For some that is attractive, for others not. But the OS was at that time never seen as something separate because it was tightly connected with the specific hardware. And PPC was never a plan of Commodore, I think I read something about PA-RISC. PPC came up later when first accellerators with PPC arrived.

I bet. A matching ROM chip was needed/convenient and this was more difficult to copy than the Floppy disks...

Quote:
Desktop was called Workbench, then you had Amiga DOS, Arexx and so on

The OS consisted of a part residing in a ROM chip (the Kickstart) and the rest was diskbased (the Workbench disk set, one explicitly marked "Workbench" (the first one), the others contained stuff that simply didn't fit in the first one, like fonts, locale, etc). The desktop was part of Workbench, but of course, back then nobody thought in terms like "desktops". The desktop was just there.

Of course you will find references to Amiga DOS, Kickstart, etc, etc. And even Amiga OS (because that's what Kickstart+Workbench essentially is, even though few people bothered to think in terms of OS's back then, it was just "Amiga" (H/W)). However, the most commonly used name for the OS before 3.1 was "Workbench" (of which the Kickstart was a "dongle" ).

Not that it matters for today's situation though, where

1) Workbench is the OS for Amiga's
2) AmigaOS/OS4 is for AmigaOne's and PowerUP

Quote:

But it was. The phrase was used before Commodore died, and products released shortly after. The 3.1 upgrade was the first.

Well, the the Workbench 3.1 disks released by Cloanto had updates that wasn't present in the Commodore/Village Tronic disks.

I don't know if they have the sources. But the funny thing is that Cloanto is the only one who can claim legitimate ownership of the 3.1 source code.

And the Amiga Inc Hyperion agreement explicitly stipulates that Hyperion DOES NOT(!!!) own the source 3.1 source code, which is kind of funny!

The 3.1 sources are Cloanto's sources!
