@TRIPOS

Mplayer decoding under Morphos for some codecs is very good .

Maybe not under MacOS, but AFAIK, MorphOS running one of the faster of the already supported G5 machines does 1080p x.264 streams very well (the quad core isn't even supported yet). But I think MorphOS is faster than Mac on this. It plays 720p streams just fine on the faster G4 machines, while this isn't true for MacOS (AFAIK)...

@Spectre660

MPlayer decoding speed depends on used FFMPEG, newer versions are much slower with some codecs, but offer more codecs.

"Despite what you might have read in this thread NO pricing for the tabor hardware was announced. The speculated numbers quoted are also vey high. "

it says no decision yet

@TRIPOS

Even a linux PowerpcSPE developer was a surprised when I posted a picture of Tabor running the Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 . He wanted to know if we had built a PowerpcSPE version of Ubuntu Mate 16.04.

Edited. Spelling .

This price figure was denied by Trevor himself. (post 301)

No other price was communicated, the quoted figures must have come from somewhere originally, and IMHO it could very well be that he (after 300 eye-opening posts on AW.net) started to reconsider how to offload 1000 already built and already paid for motherboards with a rather useless CPU. Gone are the meaty profit margins, and instead selling at big losses just to recover at least some of the capital sunk into this may suddenly have become an attractive option!

I must admit I like reading your posts.

Quoted price was idea of one A-Eon Linux team developers (I think it was Xeno?), who thought Tabor could be close to SAM460 price. Apparently A-Eon aims for lower price. Sure, it could be 699 EUR.

@TRIPOS

it is a little strange to me that Trevor as the person finally signing the bills has no clue what Tabor will cost. Normally I would assume that I have calculated sales that have to cover the development costs, additional part prices, costs for distribution and sales, taxes and so on

I would assume that you calculate that before starting a project (even when some uncalculated things can happen) but perhaps that is only me

@All

I am among those who think the Tabor is an announced fiasco and I am from the OS4 camp, developer and user.

Who cares? In the end everyone is free to use his money the way he likes.

@Spectre660

Maybe you want hardware that is "fast enough".
I want hardware that is faster than that.

And Tabor running full 1080p video?
Even under Linux utilizing both cores WITH some help from the gpu this is a tall order.

I can already do this on a G5 under MorphOS.

So...should I buy "Amiga" hardware that requires that I use Linux in order for it to be "fast enough"?

I think they have some idea, but rather don´t give any number - it would be much worser to promise eg. 500 EUR computer and then sell it for 600 EUR, because there were unexpected costs.

As far as I know no one is forcing you to buy anything.
You have always maintained that you were interested in the Cyrus.
Just get one when they are available if you still want one.

500 or 600 is not very far from 700. People would be disappointed then. I assume people have unrealistic expectations. Finally it will depend on the calculated sales and the development costs, part prices people always mention are the smaller part of it.

Nevertheless, now they should know the prices quiet well. Hardware is ready, calculated sales should be known and OS development costs should be known too. What might be unknown is when it will be ready.

Cyrus, yes I am still impressed with that.

But if I made a few comments that might have lead you to believe that I wanted a Tabor board (before I had the full specs) I apologize.

Right now, I am worried that this device might actually hinder our small community.

If a low cost board was introduced that was FULLY compatible with our existing software OR could easily be rendered so...no problem.

But we are talking about a system with a relatively slow cpu that will also require significant software overhead (eating up precious cpu cycles) OR software recompilation to attain that compatibility.

Our decisions are just going to leave those outside our community completely confused.

Damn, I would just like to see the X5000 released reasonably soon.
Wasn't that supposed to happen last year?

Tabor I can wait for, especially with this "we will ram it right down their throats" attitude.

Then again, once it is available, the real tests can begin.

BTW - To all, Trevor has known hat the price was (to him) since he completed the first batch of these.
All that remains is for him to calculate what overhead is needed to promote and sell these at a profit.

The hope being that he can make a profit, sell at least 1000 of these, and look good in the process.

For me the opposite is true. I can´t afford X5000 and Tabor may be last chance to buy A1 before OS4 faction is gone.

I like benchmarking. I hope to be among first buyers to evaulate real performance for others.

Right now, I would be more worried about the glacial pace of Hyperion's software development than I would be about hardware developments.

If anyone is going to destroy the OS4 faction, it will likely be them.

Or has it excaped everyone's notice that most of the noteworthy software upgrades recently have come from outside Hyperion's core team?

BTW - Pavlor, I look forward to the benchmarks.
Amiga-centric info would be most appreciated.

OK, I will bow out for awhile and let you guys have at it (I just wanted to respond to the post that made it look like I was the only one that didn't support this development).

no. no, it hasn't.
