Hi all

What will be first to market Apollo V4 or Amigaone A1222. Now I have a dilemma what to get ?

Stand alone V4 sounds like a nice idea fast Amiga 68K with all the nice modern features. Or OS4 with all the nice new software that has been coming lately.

Not sure I be able to afford both...

@g01df1sh

Get lone; you never know when you get chance again, maybe

"Apollo V4" = "best toy ever", might even be usable, to some degree.

"Amigaone A1222" = Guarantied to have CPU power to be usable and interesting.

@g01df1sh

Depends what you want to do really.

Maybe wait for the V4 to be released, and watch the youtubers/streamers review of the hardware?
There will surely be plenty of commentary from several of the known youtubers once its open for public sales.

I would even dare to say that those youtubers should be approached by Apollo Team ahead of open release, so they can get familiar with the hardware, and give proper commentary BEFORE it hits the "mainstreet". Thats just my 2 cents on the topic

If you read the PDF that came with the announcement;

Quote:
The V4 will be produced in a factory and sold at professional vendors, so it will surely be less headaches for both Apollo Team and customers to order, ship and recive;

Apollo Team expects first batch of Vampire V4 to be available in Q4’17. An official ETA will be announced once
first batch order is processed at factory.

Quote:

In response to the unexpectedly high demand for Vampire 600 V2 and Vampire 500 V2+, the Vampire V4 will be
sold exclusively through our authorized resellers:
 Amedia Computer France SAS https://www.amedia-computer.com/fr/
 Leaman Computing Ltd http://amigakit.com/
 RELEC http://www.relec.ch
 AmigaStore http://amigastore.eu

I Did read the pdf but no mention of how many are going to be produced. If only around 500 at a time are produced I think we may have a supply problem on are hands.

@outrun1978

I would assume that an A1222 would make a better stand alone machine, but who knows? Both machines have FPU issues and both are lesser machines than the X5000. Ideally, we'd all be buying X5000s and ALSO buying a Vampire for our Classics if we don't have access to fast accelerators. I don't expect more new software being developed for the Classics than the AmigaOne machines. I need convincing with the Tabor. I wish it had a better name for starters.

@g01df1sh

What a ridiculous headline. What race are you talking about? The A1222 was announced in October 2015 and the hardware exists but it isn't being sold because its oddball math co-processor is incompatible with OS4 software. And at the current rate of progress, or rather the lack of progress, it'll be several more years before the A1222 is released for sale, if ever. So don't hold your breath.

The Vampire is now moving into revision 4 and previous versions of the Vampire have been shipping for quite some time. The V4 is an incremental upgrade whereas the A1222 hasn't even made it off of the starting line.

Easy choice...

A1222 once available and then Vampire standalone (if the price is right).

@ferrels

I think you're making a bigger problem of the A1222's SPE FPU then it really is. yes they probably have to port over a library to let the SPE work in it's FPU assist mode, which basically allows it to work mostly as an FPU while using softfloats to make up for any instructions it lacks. It's probably as good as finished, but all A-EON hardware takes time to ship.

I've seen a few videos of Tabor running various OS4.x software without specially compiled binaries and performance seems sufficient. What seems to have been holding back release are the lack of completed audio and NIC drivers.

@WolfpackN64

Two years to port a library over to a different architecture? You must be joking. You are speculating that they have to port a library over to a different FPU architecture, which even if that's true, 2 years to do so is ridiculous, so no, I'm not making this into a bigger problem than it already is.

And now you are speculating that it's also a matter shipping time? That's also ridiculous. The product hasn't even been released for sale so shipping times aren't even a factor right now. "As good as finished" is still unfinished and not shipping, in other words, no product and no word from A-EON as to when it might be finished.

It also doesn't seem to have working NIC or audio which is also worrisome. No word on those issues either.

Yep, as a software developer, I can say that all those times you've listed above are ridiculous.

Vampire V4: Announced: August 3, 2017.....Projected Release Date: 4th Qtr 2017

Isn't it amazing how a competent team of developers can design and develop both hardware and software and release it in weeks rather than years.

And the guy who developed the softFPU for the Vampire is a novice/beginner assembly language programmer who wrote, debugged and released the app in just a matter of 3-5 weeks.

Well, if you count Natami it doesn´t look that impressive.

@ferrels

So so ferrels

OP asked for opinions about what option is the best for him, which obviously is hard to answer unless we know what he wants the AOS for.

I just installed ApolloOS, which looks really neat, but at the end of it, the available utilities are still as old as when I ran the Vampire on AOS3.9 with my own tweaks.

I think the only way to answer OPs questions is for him to post his requirements, what tasks does he need the Amiga for, and take it from there.

Both A1220 is several months away at the very least, so it gives developers and streamers time to illuminate him.

I'm not counting the Natami. I'm counting the Vampires V1 thru V3. The Natami was never a product because one of the team members refused to allow its release.
