There are many reasons why the O.S. is not ported.
Here are a few major ones which I recognize.
- Hyperion would need to stop work on everything else for an unknown period of time
- there is no cooperation from the CPU or GPU Vendor
- there is nobody to write the hardware drivers, and no cooperation from those vendors
- there is nobody to work on the bios

Think of it this way. If someone would create the drivers and bios, that would provide a foundation for Hyperion to port the operating system. Nobody is offering to do a portion of that work and vendor cooperation, except for ACube and A-Eon. Hyperion has stated many times they are willing to support hardware vendors, who in turn, will also support Hyperions efforts.

These issues haven't prevented the MorphOS team to port MorrphOS to Apple HW ..

@Fl@sh

Consoles aren't sensible platforms, because they're usually limited by a reason or another.

Developers want to lock it or they're just lacking in hardware. PS3 and Xbox 360 would just be out of the question because lack of RAM. 256 or 512 MB of memory isn't enough for a desktop computer.

Going to PPC Macs would have been a wise decision indeed, as seen with MorphOS.

Enough for basic Amiga needs. Sure, once the browser situation improves, more will be better.

MorphOS is in the same half dead state as OS4. Wise choice indeed.

With the current (last 10 years) browser situation 512MB is helplessly low.

With cheap, available, and tested hardware and official name, maybe the situation would be better than both sides added today :) Cheap HW has dragged to MorphOS and official name to OS4 now.

I'd like to know a short answer why Hyperion guys didn't followed the way of porting Amiga Os4 development to cheap and very popular hardware platforms like xbox/ps3 consoles, imac/power mac computers or any other diffused and cheap ppc device.

...

Why?

Short answer.
Because there was nobody acting as 'AmigaOS4 hardware partner' financing and selling the ported OS.

This whole thread is waste of time.
People instead of thinking how to cheat Hyperion, should spend their time on adding binary integration with 68k software to aros ppc.

At least they didn't have to spend a cent on developing/producing/distributing hardware.

Where would be OS4 if the money spent on hardware would have been spent on software instead?

While not completely showstopping the RAM limits of MOS are a pita for webbrowsing.
You can get by with 1.5GB, but have to do some serious compromising,... minimizing amount of open tabs, restrict what else Im doing while heavily browsing, etc.

The only amiga-oid system that is capable of a reasonably current browsing scenario is AROS. Most recent browser in the amiga-oid world, not crippled by being restricted to a byte ordering, jit javascript, fast hardware, and able to utilize enough RAM to make it an uncompromised experience.

As for the original post, I'd have to say a look of desperation isnt going to strengthen perception of an OS.
Now that we know it's a dead end beyond being a hobby some of these cheaper ppc devices are a more appealing target

@fishy_fis

I think 1.5 GB is okay or rather still comfortable. I seldomly run in situations where the 1.5 Gb Ram is the showstopper. But it's indeed at its limit. One of the reasons MorphOS needs to do the inevitable cut and go x64.

>I'd like to know a short answer why Hyperion guys didn't followed the way of porting Amiga Os4 development to cheap and very popular hardware platforms like xbox/ps3 consoles,

Consoles are too limited and require insane amount of time to get drivers done.
AmigaPlayer that would run on top of existing console OS might have worked anyway, but also that would have required a lot of work and would have been limited vs resources/performance.

> imac/power mac computers or any other diffused and cheap ppc device.

Supporting undocumented/closed apple HW well would have been huge amount of work.
Port to iMac was anyway done but it was not finished or released. It was a quick hack.

>It's a software house who lives selling software so: why don't sell million of copies instead of few thousand?

Porting to some other HW does not ignite millions of sales.

I think there should be AmigaPlayer -emulator officially available for x64 Windows systems (I hope there will be).
A little bit like Alice. (eg. via Steam to get wider audience)

I'm saddened that community has not been able to produce ~200 PPC HW.
It definitely would be possible.
But it needs people with a lot of spare time and then thousands of euros for prototyping (then perhaps ~1M for large enough production run).

To grow userbase from ~2000 to 10 000, we would need that 200 HW and good SW support.

To grow userbase to 1M we would need a lot mature OS with SMP etc. and a lot more modern(ish) SW + ultimate RetroPlayerSW.

(at some point our systems need to support x64 natively or become totally CPU ISA independent)

Hi all,

just my 2cents, have a look at how RiscOS becomes more popular again due to cheap Raspberry Pi hardware and Open Source version.

I think it's not the worst way to go.

@Oli716

A Raspberry Pi version of AmigaOS was a no-brainer especially since Hyperion are happy for AmigaOS classic version to be emulated. A 'lite' version ported to Arm would have raised the profile and might have led to a few purchases of Amiga Forever and AmigaOS 4.x Classic Edition.

@Oli716

A-Eon hopes to release cheaper AmigaOne to broaden user base, but its expected price is still too high in comparison to RPi. As the PowerPC is dead on desktop, supporting more garbage hardware will lead to nowhere. I think new Amithlon-like platform for OS4 could be viable next step. "x86" CPUs are now so fast, that PowerPC emulation becomes feasible.

And of course...

Welcome!

Welcome to Amigaworld!

There was a native (not hosted) version of AROS being worked on for the Pi3, but I don't know what became of it -- perhaps someone else does?

nothing unfortunately... two devs worked on it some time, one was Kalamatee the other I cannot remember. Obviously they lost interest. I would have supported it immediately because it made sense to me

Are you talking about the Steve Jones project (@clusteruk) or something later?

it is as costly as a high-end PC offering embedded hardware. I do not believe that the user base will become broader, more propably existing users replace old hardware and some collectors buy it additionally

There are few classic users I know waiting for Tabor. However, with only 1000 boards for sale, OS4 platform will not grow much.
