@AmigaSource

heh.

Just copy your nice post here where you wanted it in the 1st place.

The other thread will drop off the page soon enough without further postings.

Only staff can fix this really.

@Karlos

Not sure what your point is.. While your statement is true, it only affects the original decision to do a particular upgrade / work... That is why so many things are obsolete and yet still being used.. I get that.. If it ain't broke don't fix it mentality. ( That will kill you eventually but that is a different discussion altogether.)

But in this case they already decided to do the work of migrating the site and once you start that work then you need to complete it in a timely manner.

Regardless, great to see the site is back up and running again and looks good!

@outlawal2

Many problems were inherited from the prior years before A-EON acquired the site. Finding time to address all of these issues is always a problem when we have so many other "plates spinning", tasks to complete and projects to manage. We operate as a commercial enterprise exclusively in the Amiga market place, therefore we have to prioritise tasks that generate revenue to enable us to provide Amiga services.

Our hand was forced by the EU's GDPR work that needed to be applied to the website coupled with the fact that the old forum site ran on an outdated and unsupported VBulletin 3 software.

The site additionally required an SSL certificate and as it was on a shared server, this was not appropriate for the scale of the website. We needed to the forums migrate to a new server and in addition move the other services of Amiga.org such as the Wiki and the Amiga Developer website and Bug Tracker.

Over the period, in addition to all of the Amiga.org/Amiga Developer services, we updated and migrated the main Amiga Kit website, the AmiSphere and AMIStore website.

@outlawal2

My point is that I believe this work was basically done in one person's spare time (just my gut instinct) and that's why it has taken so long. If it were a commercial site, there would have been downtime measured in minutes, if at all and not without complete feature parity. Rarther than ser false expectations, it would have been better to give no estimation on the work required at the start (beyond "when it's done"). Alas this is the Amiga community so we are probably used to the estimation process.

The main thing is that the site is back and the current missing content is still safe and sound. I haven't tested it but apparently the site works fine with iBrowse which is already a plus, no more curl/regex middleman proxy needed.

@amigakit

Congratulations on the new site - looks pretty good!

VERY difficult to estimate times on projects of this size - far too many lurking gotchas and unknowns, besides just the basic issue of time and resources.

Cheers!

@amigakit

Sounds like a lot of work. Glad to see that you were able to complete it and maybe now all of us armchair quarterbacks will leave you alone!

The new site looks really good so congratulations on a job well done..

@Karlos

Looks like you were correct regarding the minimal staff. Man what a huge task. My previous post regarding a timely migration would also have had an entire TEAM of people working on it..

Anyway, like you said the important thing is the site is back up and running and looks good!

@amigakit

Thanks and congrats for all the hard work.

I don't dislike the landing page, I added the link to the forum to my "favourites" bookmarks, so it's just a magic trackpad / mouse click away anyway.

Nice buy like Microsoft. Google buys too much.

I Don't mind but have to Advertise too in any ways possible.

Waiting what to buy then.

@thread

An unfortunate byprodcut of migration sadly means that every amiga.org link posted on Amigaworld.net (and all other places as well) up until the time of the amiga.org migration will be unresolvable.

In addition, anyone who had bookmarks will find them equally useless.

In essence it will require a rediscovery of where past threads of interest now reside, in order to continue discussion on those prior topics.

This is a solvable problem. All of the vbulletin links contained a thread ID, and it should be possible to obtain a mapping of VB thread ID to SMF thread ID provided it either preserved them as is (which it did dor user IDs) or can be extracted from the original data.

A simple redirect script can be written that is triggered by an apache rewrite rule for a suitable pattern for the old link. Any links that match the old format are trapped, the old ID extracted and given to the script. The script then obtains the new thread ID (if different) and performs a 301 header redirect to the new URL.

All the user sees is a very slight delay opening the original URL and that the URL they end up on is different than the link they clicked.

When the site was migrated to vb from xoops, I wrote a script to permanently fix all local links in posts. I think, but cannot recall for certain that a similar redirect scheme was put in place for inbound links.

I have added a small rewrite rule to do this.

Thank you.
I believe given a bit of time this will help with site traffic amongst other things.

I was particularly concerned about articles outside of our forums that dwelt on subjects like "Amiga is still alive" or similar. Imagine the PR value of clicking a link after reading such a thought followed by the reader being taken to "404"....
Heh.

I understand the concern.

The rewrite rules are quite complex. I have tested a few of the old Amiga.org links from search engines and they redirect to the new forum now. There maybe some which do not redirect so I can adjust the rewrite rules as problems are identified.
