So, can you shed any light on what actually happened to your board? I can't imagine you carelessly spilling liquid on such an expensive piece of hardware, but at the same time, neither can I image A-EON/AmigaKit to be making it all up.

@Trixie

I have no Idea.

Computer was working ok in the morning on 11 Oct 2018.
Turned it of after about 8:00am left it until about 4:30pm . Would not restart .
Was on a UPS and the power supply had no problem and is still working.

There was nothing on the boad that I could see with a casual inspection
when I removed it and packed it for return .
It appears that A-Eonit had the returned motherboard for about was 5 1/2 months before initial inspection.

@Hans & @Trixie

Ah! I didn't know. Thank you guys. I'll look into getting one.

With the talk of supporting Southern Island Cards I didn't think it supported the newer Volcanic Islands, etc. I'll be pleased to use one of those

Edit...

RX550 and RX560's seem to be out of stock. Will the RX570 work fine?
(More specifically: Gigabyte RX570 - GV-RX570GAMING-4GD)?

@gonegahgah

RX 570 *should* work. However, try to get a 550/560 if you can, because those are well tested. We currently have a known issue with RX 580 cards & Warp3D Nova, and I'm not yet sure if the RX 570 is also affected.

@Hans

Hi,

I've bought the newest Radeon Driver upon release, but I'm a bit reluctant to swap the graphics card again. I have an ATI Radeon 270X with a big very quiet cooler (Arctic Accelero S3 + Turbo Module), it's quieter than the CPU-fan.

Will there be any gain swapping to a Radeon RX560?

I might install one in my X5000, but the X1000 is that more stable, I'm not using the X5000 at all ATM.

Not really. You gain dynamic power management, but you lose legacy Warp3D support (i.e., no MiniGL).

which is the very feature I was looking forward to and so happy you have implemented. :)

Since I've supported your achievement with the purchase of the latest Driver, I will just wait a little more for a new GFX-card.
I remember somewhere some work with WAZP-3D was ongoing, can't remember exactly, isn't it supposed to be a replacement for Warp3D?

Thanks for your previous answer.

Wazp3D has an experimental Warp3D Nova backend. Once that's stable, then it'll provide backward compatibility with Warp3D.

In parallel, Daytona is working on MGLReloaded, which will provide faster hardware acceleration for MiniGL (again, via Warp3D Nova).

However, both these projects are still works in progress...

Maybe Polaris next year, if there are benchmarks with show real benefits.

One obvious benefit is that the Polaris driver supports power management. I used to use a low-end Radeon R5 230 for some time, because I was afraid that switching to a Polaris card would greatly increase fan noise as well as power consumption. None of it turned out to be true with this model. I don't look back.

The driver won't get picked up by the system unless it is loaded from the Kicklayout. You need to go to your SYS:Kickstart/ drawer, open the "Kicklayout" file in a text editor, find the line which says "MODULE Kickstart/RadeonHD.chip" and add another line below it, saying

MODULE Kickstart/RadeonRX.chip

then save the file and reboot.

I don't have a RadeonHD card installed so I originally commented out the RadeonHD.chip line. But for some reason my machine wouldn't boot after that, so I put it back in. Does the RadeonRX driver need the HD driver installed to work? I have no idea but better safe than sorry. So now my Kicklayout file has (among the other lines:

MODULE Kickstart/RadeonHD.chip
MODULE Kickstart/RadeonRX.chip

Hope this helps.

Can you benchmark the different cards and post the details here for future reference of others considering what card to buy.

@Hans

Turns out my girlfriend's son replaced his Gigabyte GV-RX560GAMING OC-2GD with a higher spec'd NVidea card.

So lucky me I've got that RX560 now

Just have to get the Amiga X1000 back up and running and fully update!!!
Should probably do that first before putting in the new card I'm guessing.

May have to reinstall my system too because I have a 4K monitor.
I believe I only originally set my computer up as HD but I want to use the full 4K if I can?

Actually, because you have an X1000 you may want to put the card in first, to test that it works. I couldn't get my X1000 to even boot with a Radeon RX 550 plugged in. These cards have UEFI firmware instead of VGABIOS, and the X1000's firmware seems to have difficulty with that.

That shouldn't be necessary. The driver should pick up the 4K screen modes automatically, so long as you have DDC enabled (in ScreenMode prefs, on the Monitors tab). If not, you may have timing limits set for your monitor that remove the 4K/UHD modes. Those are also editable via ScreenMode prefs.
