Hello Everyone,

In 2020 I plan on creating new videos using "Brilliance II" Software.
Amiga "Brilliance II" published by Digital Creations in 1994 for the Commodore Amiga Computer.

Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/374553356 or Youtube: https://youtu.be/RUo-Fysctvg

If you would like particular tutorials on the software please list your ideas here :)

The first two tutorials will be on:

- Dithering Techniques
- Using the Stencil Tool

P.S I have considered creating a book if there is any interest.

I would be interested in the book. Looking forward to the tutorial videos too.

Great idea! Thank you! This is something to have a look at during the Christmas holidays

Also interested in the book but my main concern is not understanding how the anim files Brilliance 2 generates differ from Deluxe Paint V. They didn't seem to work with AnimWebConverter to convert to AVI video for use on iMovie etc and have corrupted results unless I reimported them into DP5 and exported them from there for use with the converter!

Digipaint was the first paint/photoediting app I bought with manual.

Brilliance I had only as a pirated copy.
It was insanely powerfull 24bit photo editing/painting enabler on my OCS A2000 and AGA A4000.

Editing and then viewing in superhires-laced HAM8 gave even better result than 640x400 at 24bit on other devices.
(It was better result than via some 24bit gfx cards for Amiga.)

(not sure if it has any more use than nostalgia nowdays, but for classic niche it is important piece of SW)

I'm sure a lot of Amigans have interest in it & about book about it.

Pixel-pushers never stopped being used on Classic Amigas, NG, Vampire and under emulation. Many here still animate with Deluxe Paint and/or Brilliance. Heck, the mighty Eric Schwartz still release Amiga themed animations on YouTube from time to time!

This book would certainly have real world use and would not be relegated to a nostalgia piece. Nothing replaced the Bitmap Graphics Editors of the 90s and nothing beyond Grafx2 seems to have been attempted on modern platforms! And no, Personal Paint's anim features are not up to the standards of Brilliance 1 or 2 or Deluxe Paint 3, 4 or 5 even now!

@All great to see some interest in Brilliance software.

@DiscreetFX, thankyou for your interest in book form, noted :)

@BigD, you do raise a few important points, I possibly will compare techniques in Dpaint and Brilliance. Did also notice for example dragging/dropping IFF animation files in After Effects works flawlessly but didn’t work in other programs. So some tutorials will cover problems and solutions to current issues.

@KimmoK, love to experiment in Digipaint sometime as well as other art tools, nostalgia definitely but love using the tool in modern game development. The morphing tools as well as light\shade are very cool and future tutorial ideas.

@davebraco Thankyou :)

I’ll explain the tools I use.... Pc/Mac/Amiga and why and of course have the source files to play around with.

Also will cover some future ideas/enhancements to software such as Brilliance and the IFF format.

@invent

Please add me to the list of the book supporters.
I did some pixel graphics in the past, with Brilliance 2.0 of course, but literally just pixelated characters, and badly animated too.

I am extremely interested in any animation/light table/tweening/color optimization techniques.

thanks

Yes, please add me too.

Is it still possible to get this software?

@invent

Just curious if you tried "pegger", as we discussed some time ago.

If you can get those sources, then brilliance, dpaint, lightwave, etc. can load and save .jpg files, as I mentioned.

@BigD

I have no clue what AnimWebConverter handles, which is why I mentioned Mainactor to you before, which does the format conversions, including longword 7.

It would be cool if the book could be sold bundled with a legal Brilliance 2 cd.
Did someone managed to contact some ex-digital creations and ask for permission to legally release this wonderful piece of software?

@IridiumFX Will do, I hope you can share what you have done in Brilliance, would love to see. I did quickly look into the tweening/morphing frames again after your post, will cover animation.
Thanks @OldAmigan. Good question, It would be wonderful if people could buy it, even digitally. After selling mine years ago, I picked it up about 6 months ago at a local Amiga gathering.

I can say that we are narrowing down who owns the IP of the software and hope to bring some news soon. Just don't want it to get stuck like Dpaint (EA).

@number6 I have not tried it but know it also supports a few other formats. I'd love to have png as a save option or animated gif. (was just looking back at our conversation in forums about pegger)

@DrProcton as mentioned we have two people who are on the Digital Creations team, awaiting some feedback from them both, will share it if we find out more info.

I did start a facebook group for Brilliance sometime ago (not a big fan of the social media site) but many Amigans hand around there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/AmigaBrillianceSoftware/

Perhaps the cause is Hollywood plugin for the format of this program still doesn't exist.

@KimmoK

OK, so, back decades go, I had an A2K with an '040/32MB accelerator board--it would only boot to 1.3 or 2.x; had to softkick it to 3,1,, with a nice Picasso 24 bit board.

and a legal copy of True Brilliance 2.0.

Ran fine under 2.1, but bombed out under 3.1...Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!?!?!?

Anyone else have this?

And, yes, support for more recent file formats would be nice....

@pgf_666

At some point Brilliance required a dongle. Discovered I have one.

"True Brilliance 2.0. ... Ran fine under 2.1, but bombed out under 3.1.."

IIRC, also I had compatibility troubles on A4k & 3.1. But I do not remember any details any more.

(Brilliance 1.0 was bug free on A4k: http://us3.aminet.net/docs/rview/Brilliance.txt )

Remind what MainActor will convert to again. I downloaded it after your suggestion but haven't got round to experimenting with it yet.

@Signman

Only version 1 needed the dongle, version 2 removed the dongle "- To eliminate the possibility of professional users losing the Security Key at crucial times such as at presentations or during the creative process. - To free up the second mouse or joystick for us with other programs and hardware such as Real 3D Ver 2.0, Aladdin 4D, and Video Toaster third party add=ons using the GPI trigger"

Took it upon myself to create a Christmas wallpaper with Brilliance. Finally got acquainted with more tools and am pleasantly surprised.
I will be interested in more on this topic. Reading manual and there is a lot of useful features one wouldn’t expect in older graphic software.
