Nudged by the WOW thread and the impressive achievement of the team behind Emotion Player, I grabbed some Video CD to feed to the X1000.

While the AmigaOne-XE happily played them I could not get the X1000 to playback any of the VCDs. First I thought it was the DVD drive as there is nothing appearing on the Workbench when the VCD is inserted but some VCD just do not appear on the WB even if the media is fine.

After some playing around, I found that on the AmigaOne-XE i was still using the old mplayer version of 2009.
This version does not work well on the X1000, in fact it crashes at will.
But at least I could convince it do start playing a VCD at least twice. The video started well, but after 1 minute it becomes a slideshow. So the issue was not the DVD drive.

I tried the newer Mplayers on the XE,

LiveForIt-mplayer 6.4 14 Jan 2015
Liveforit-MPlayerNG 6.5.7 15 Aug 2015
mplayer-mickjt 1.0.1 03 Jan 2018

and whilst the do play other files fine on the XE, they won't play the VCDs either.

So I suppose something has changed in mplayer after version 6.4.

this is the output in the console with the newer mplayers on both XE and X1000:
Quote:

Playing vcd://2.
No stream found to handle url vcd://2
Select error: No such file or directory
AmigaOS4.1 Bug select() don't reset or set errno value

Exiting... (End of file)

This the output on the X1000 with the older mplayer 6.4. After about 1 minute the it is not possible to watch anymore:
Quote:

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html.

Well, probably I'm the only one trying to play VCDs on an Amiga which is not a CD32, but somehow, I would love it if the X2000 was able to do so..
Or maybe the new Emotion Player?!

edit: not the X2000 but the X1000..

@Amigo1

let me quess, your using the mplayer gui?

If you read the output log it says.... you picked video output that sucks!!!

Quote:
The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.

So, in one of snapshots your using SDL, and one your using P96.

So p96_pip does not work on X1000, as it needs overlay and Radeon HD graphics cards do no include hardware overlay, they do however support hardware composition.

p96 is also useless as 100% software convertion of YUV422 to ARGB... so its slow....

YV12 should be the same as YUV420 more or less so you really should use a video output that support YUV420

see..

mplayer -vo help

Also one of your copy & paste shows SDL, and SDL does NOT support hardware accelerated YUV so that’s going to be slow, so don’t use SDL…

Are you using mplayer gui, then I suggest that you use the latest version of it, as many things where changed including how the two programs communicate.

Mplayer was changed so it actually worked with proper AREXX scripts, the old one failed when got strange values on RC, resulting AREXX thinking it was error not return value. this broke AREXX scripts. So I can't have that.. so it got fixed.

a old version of MpayerGUI do not support LiveForIt-Mplayer.
the newest version og MPlayerGui does support LiveForIt-Mplayer..

So first thing you most do is get the newest MplayerGUI, do not simply copy it AmigaONE-XE...

LiveForIt-Mplayer is not backwards compatible with buggy AREXX messaging, so use version of MplayerGUI that support LiveForIt-Mplayer where can select video output that don’t suck, please, or simple use mplayer from shell.

@Amigo1

In you comment it does not say what type of graphic card you have, if you have RX card, LiveForIt-mplayer does not identity it as graphic card that supports hardware composition YUV420/YUV422, this has something do when I wrote vo_comp_yuv for mplayer, I got presented with some code that should check if the YUV422 is supported by graphic.library sadly that code gaves false positives on older Radion cards, so I had filter out graphics cards by name of the graphic card, as workaround for this problem.

In the case of RX card you need to look at vo_comp_yuv and add check for your graphic card.

"RX" cards did not exist or was not supported by AmigaOS, when I worked on Mplayer, so nothing I can for see.

I assume that mickjt have fixed this maybe... I believe he does not use a open repository, so really hard to know what was changed or not.

how ever if picked the correct video output I belive there should be some error message saying you can't use the video output you have selected, I do not see that in your logs, so .... pick the correct video output, and then we look at what happens.

Thank you for your reply. To your questions:

Yes, I'm using mplayer-Gui on all systems it's version 1.61, the only available on os4depot.net

Yes, in one of snapshots i'm using SDL (X1000), and on one I'm using P96 (AmigaOne XE) for old version of mplayer (2009)
I retry after I read your post, and you right: same as 2 days ago, P96 does not work on X1000; it work on AmigaOne XE only.

P96 maybe be useless, but it makes no difference on AmigaOne-XE. It is faster than SDL (on AmigaOne XE) and is only I can use for display in Window and not Fullscreen when using old mplayer on AmigaOne XE.

Yes, I use mplayer -vo help and old (2009) version of mplayer only have P96 and SDL on X1000 and XE. P96 output work on XE not on X1000. Output same, I olny post output of X1000 but really is same:

yuv4mpeg yuv4mpeg output for mjpegtools
png PNG file
jpeg JPEG file
gif89a animated GIF output
tga Targa output
pnm PPM/PGM/PGMYUV file
md5sum md5sum of each frame

Yes, of my copy&paste show SDL, that is copy&paste of X1000. It is only way to make show video on X1000 when use mplayer old version of 2009.

Yes, i tried use mplayer from CLI (Shell) but not one (beside version 2009) start VCD, all (beside version 2009) not have find video track on VCD.

I use latest version of MPlayer-GUI version 1.61 from os4depot.net.

Here you can see again all output from different mplayer version, starting from v 2009 (1), then liveforit (2) then liveforitNG (3) and last MickJ (4)

So as it be see, all new mplayer not find track on drive, but track is there, as can see with mplayer old version 2009

This time all test only on X1000 reported here. But is same on AmigaOne XE, new version of mplayer not find video track on DVD-drive.. Hope now it more clear to understand.

p.s. I have download fresh copy of all version and MPlayer-GUY on all machine (X1000 and AmigaOne-XE) and have make exactly same dir for convenience. Extract MPlayer-GUY in Work:Tools/Players
and then all version in Work:Tools/Players/MPlayer-GUI/
so all version are in subdirectory of MPlayer-GUI, I rename sub-drawer of version like "1-mplayer" (v2009), 2-Liveforit, 3-LiveForItNG, etc.

@Amigo1

noticed is says: "No stream found to handle url"

So maybe it thinks it is an Internet page.
I do not have mpeg video CD my self, so its is a bit hard for me to check.

@NutsAboutAmiga

vcd discussion with some samples (downloadable) in posts 7 and 9

bah. link in 9 is gone.
But there are also instructions on making your own sample within the thread.

Also:

link within (post #2) to mplayer samples is functional

I assume that mickjt have fixed this maybe... I believe he does not use a open repository, so really hard to know what was changed or not.

All of the source code changes should be in the Docs/ directory of the main archive. I think there was a couple of missing files that are auto-generated when running ./configure.

I see that vcd_read_amiga.h is missing in the latest revision on your github repo, but there in previous revisions. I could take a look and see if I can add it back to my port.

Yeah I don't know what to do either. When I update it next, i'll just add a check for RadeonRX.chip

As for playing VCDs, why not just play the .DAT file directly like mplayer CD0:MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT ?

Does that work? If you're using MPlayer-GUI, it might be using pattern matching that doesn't let you see the .DAT file

Unfortunately that does not always work. Many (in fact almost all VCDs I own) do not mount on Workbench. For the couple of VCDs that do appear on WB it works, but these do no play using the VideoCD tab either.

Thanks for your comment, and you have a PM.

I forgot how to use "dd" on AmigaOS, and apparently I'm too stupid to find any documentation about it!

I tried the wiki.amigaos.net, I found a couple of threads on amigans but nothing useful and a google search did not help me further..

how can I tell "dd" to the source should be "sb600sata.device 0" or "CD0:"?

I'm trying to "rip" any VideoCD, my first hope was AmiDVD but it always gives me an error. I suppose some copy protection on the media..

@Amigo1

You say you do have at least 1 vcd that does mount, right?

Mick is just asking you to test playing the .dat file through the shell with the sample command line that he wrote:

mplayer CD0:MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT

just replace this with the path to your .dat file.

This should work, since it was tested.

Sorry, I did not realise he was asking for the output of the command.

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
************************************************

Correct, with the -cache option given, the "system is too slow" message will not appear.

@Amigo1

Excellent. So you can also play as a file.

See Mick's post #8 to NutsAboutAmiga regardling being able to access vcd as a "vcd" instead of playing a file, as you just did.

@Amigo1

Just to throw in my 2 cents worth,

I have a VCD that I tried, I can't get MPlayer-GUI to play it, but In the x1000 shell I enter,

CD0:MPEGAV/AVSEQ01.DAT -fs >nil: *>nil:

This starts play in full screen with no warning messages. I also have MPlayers config file setup in its directory,

MPlayer:Conf/config
# Write your default config options here! # = ignore
lavdopts=skiploopfilter=all
alang=en
quiet=1
cache=8196
autosync=50
dvd-device=sb600sata.device:1
delay=-0

I'm using MPlayer v6.4 on Depot for all my videos & DVDs
If the inserted disk doesn't show on the WB, that might be a problem.

yes, out of all my VCDs, 2 of them mount on Workbench and I can use the afore mentioned "mplayer CD0:MPEGAV/AVSEQ0x.DAT"

No, the "mplayer VCD://x" does not work as it gives me a Quote:

Playing vcd://1.
No stream found to handle url vcd://1
Select error: No such file or directory
AmigaOS4.1 Bug select() don't reset or set errno value

Exiting... (End of file)

(just not to have any misunderstandings coming along, the full command would be Quote:
mplayer VCD://1 -cdrom-device sb600sata.device:0

It is the same command which MPlayer-GUI would pass to mplayer anyhow.

so unfortunately no, not excellent, far from it.

Thx! Good to know, the config file might save some typing and it might be handy in the future!

@sundown

btw, I tried your exact configuration and mplayer 6.4 will not play the .DAT files, it tells me "Seek failed"

hilarious!

And even more, mplayer 6.4 will not play the .DAT files on the AmigaOne-XE! For all of the VCDs that mount on WB I tried, mplayer will tell me the Seek error using the options above, but play the VCDs just fine with the VCD:// option.. I'm talking about the AmigaOne-XE here.

edit: are you sure you are using it to play VCDs and not DVDs? Because the "dvd-device" option in your config file will not tell mplayer to look on the sb600sata for VCDs, so using your exact command line will suppress the output telling it can not find the a1ide.device (which seems to be hardcoded in mplayer 6.4)..

I think you misunderstood.

By getting the same result as sundown it was excellent to get a confirmation of that test, since people testing and owning vcds are not so common these days.

I guess I misunderstood. It appeared obvious to me that I could play the .DAT files, as I wrote so in my previous post.

it's all very confusing!

Video CDs are really hard to come by.. they are so from 90s!

in your log it says "swscaler" thats strange that you get this in your output..
should not need it with comp_yuv2, so this something that should be looked into.

You also have "- prescaling to correct movie aspect.", should not need that, yuv mode should be able to stretch the video to fit the window with correct aspect.
