Folks,

With the COVID-19 pandemic still with us this summer, there was some doubt if any of the Amiga shows would happen this year. Luckily it looks like AmiWest 2020 is still on for this October! From the AmiWest blog:

Quote:
Change has been the "order of the day" since 2020 dawned. And as you can see, our blog has been delayed by uncertainty about what could be said about our favorite Amiga gathering: AmiWest.

Local conditions here have stabilized. Our hotel venue held their first business meetings last week. They are actively booking new events and confirming current contracts for meetings.

So we will be here in October. International travel restrictions still in place have, for the time being, largely eliminated our international participants and sponsors. However, modifications to our contract are allowing us to continue with our original, two-day format for AmiWest.

We are now in the process of confirming exhibitors. If you are one of our usual exhibitors, look for email regarding your participation in AmiWest 2020 soon. And everyone, watch this blog for updates as they are confirmed!

So remember: AmiWest 2020 and associated events will be October 24 & 25, 2020 at the Holiday Inn Express, 2224 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento, CA. Make your plans to attend now. If you've attended before, bring one other person who is new to the show. If this will be your first time, welcome to the show! See our website at amiwest.net for the latest information and watch this blog for breaking news about the show. See you in October!

I'll certainly be there in person, and I hope everyone from overseas can join then, too. No news yet if there will be a DevCon this year. Let's keep hoping!

@eliyahu

I wish us all the luck and social distancing to make this plan inviting.

SACC continues to prepare for AmiWest 2020, recently announcing that the 10 Minute Amiga Retrocast will attend...

Quote:
Doug Compton of 10 Minute Amiga Retrocast (10MARC) is attending AmiWest 2020 in Sacramento! We just met Doug last year for the first time and have already developed a very good collegial relationship.

He will be bringing his classic Amiga exhibit with him. He brought lots of goodies last year and we expect he will do the same this year. Indeed, he is driving a larger vehicle this time.

We might even get treated to an episode of 10MARC done right from AmiWest. We're still working out the details and know we'll get the best when it comes to his presentation and expertise.

... and Steven Solie will be presenting, presumably on ExecSG, by remote:

Quote:
Steve Solie will be presenting at AmiWest 2020! Through the capability of online technology, we will be hearing and seeing what he has been doing this year in the field of AmigaOS 4.x development. He is keeping us informed about the content of his presentation as he develops it.

Details are still being worked out. Our online team is still developing capabilities to enhance our presence on the web. We hope to provide a platform for more information than ever to be presented through our AmiWest show.

Latest details are available on amiwest.net. And even though I already have my travel arrangements made, I'm keeping an eye on the local COVID-19 stats also. With most airlines, Amtrak, and hotels offering very flexible cancellation policies, we might as well hope for the best and make our plans. If it doesn't happen, we just cancel and we're not out a penny. That's my plan, and I hope to see you there!

Thanks for the update. I will try to make AmiWest 2020 if at all possible. I just need the NZ government to revove the 14 day enforced quarrantine for any NZ citizen returning back to NZ.

However, I will still be sponsoring Amiwest 2020 whether I attend in person or not.

@TrevorDick

New Zealand would be insane to do so, especially for people returning from the US.

The quarantine catches sick returnees almost every day.

And you need only look at Melbourne to see what happens when quarantine is, uhm, let's call it "administered no according to best practices".

@umisef

Doing meetings today is crazy, expecially if you look at the attendees of Amiwest who are most in the most endangered group (if you look at the pictures) and look at the situation in US

I doubt that the situation has changed much till October and Corona certainly still is in the world

@OlafS25

Besides the pandemic, there's this:

Protests turn violent in downtown Sacramento

Perhaps they should move the event to Cheyenne, Wyoming this year.

Definatel not a good idea to wear a red MAGA hat outside. The anti-social facists won't know or care that it's about the Amiga computer and has nothing to do with Trump.

The Amiwest venue is several miles away from downtown Sacramento.

In other words, there is no unrest near the venue,

That's good to know. In any case, hopefully the violence will subside before AmiWest. And the virus as well, although I'm less hopeful about that.

This site caters to a global audience. Anyone who uses units to describe distance to and from convention centers are kindly asked to fully embrace the international SI standard and use units that anyone can comprehend.

The year is 2020, and how tempting it may be humanity should not strive to use limbs as a tape measure. It's time to leave the dark ages behind us once and for all.

Limiting measurements to planet earth is too exclusionary. We don't want to be spacists, after all. I suggest using parsecs, or some more suitable unit, such as nano-parsecs.

Parsec

How is a parsec non-spacist? It is only a distance inferred from Earth's movement in its orbit around the Sun !

We need a unit of distance that is independent of the observer, yet reproducible exactly by any other observer. It also must be independent of all other units, so it can't be a light-year or light-second, for instance.

I suggest the diameter of the orbit of an electron around a single proton, in its lowest-energy state (ie at 0 deg K). Can't get simpler than that.

Actually, a parsec is larger than an Astronomical Unit (AU). Its a multiple of light-years so it's larger than even that.

And your hydrogen unit reminds me of all the standard measurements of the meter trying to come up with one that could be recreated anywhere. After all it's just a hair over 39 inches :p .
