I’m curious about the current state of available Amiga hardware in the current market.

@AmigaMac

That's a bit of a broad question.

If you mean what is available, are you looking for only the PPC-based AmigaOne systems, or also the 68K FPGA clones? If the former there's not much out there. X5000 systems are increasingly difficult to find as they start selling out. ACube has made available at least two additional runs of SAM460CR boards, but you need to email them directly to get one.

The AmigaOne A1222 remains to be released; A-EON has indicated updated boards are under test and production should begin as soon as possible, but we've heard that before. I'm actually posting this reply in Odyssey on a Tabor system, so I'm really disappointed that they can't be released to the public. They aren't barn-stormers, but are good from a price/performance perspective compared to previous AmigaOne offerings.

As for the flood of 68K FPGA thingies, I'll let others comment. There are several options to choose from, and with AmigaOS 3.2 having been released lately, it's a good time to grab one and play around. AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 2 is also out, and is terrific fun. It's just that getting an AmigaOne is a tad more difficult (and costly) than the 68K side.

@AmigaMac

I've bought 3 "Amigas" in the last year - a Vampire V4 standalone direct from Apollo, and an X5000 and a Sam460 both nearly new on ebay and at a much lower price than waiting to buy brand new from Acube or A-EON

So, they are out there and can be had, if you bother to look around.

@AmigaMac

It depends on which Amiga platform you consider, @eliyahu sum up that already what you can find today.

As a user of AmigaOS 4.x, I am personally supporting the project for a PowerPC based notebook. They are currently building prototypes, and in my opinion we could see something working in less than a year

https://www.powerpc-notebook.org/campaigns/donation-campaign-for-production-of-three-working-prototypes/

So far, the only operating system announced for the platform is Linux.
In fact, nobody publicly stated -yet- that AmigaOS 4.x will be ported to this notebook, but if you consider that the not-for-profit organization that is carrying out the project ( https://www.powerprogress.org/ ) has commissioned the open-hardware hardware design to ACube System ( https://www.acube-systems.biz/ ), that should be a hint.

But they’ve got 2 days and they are only 55% funded for the 3 prototypes! Is it KickStarter rules whereby it’s game over if they don’t reach the target or does a rich sugar daddy step in at that point?

Has anyone attempted a dual boot setup with OS4 and MOS on a PowerPC Amiga system?

@AmigaMac

I had a PegII system from 2007 to 2010 and I successfully set it up for dual boot. I sold it off in 2010. I do have to say that MorphOS was a much more polished OS and was much snappier than OS4. Ambient was very elegant while the OS4 Workbench was downright clunky. OS4 is basically an OS3 experience on PPC hardware.

@AmigaMac

Not exactly, I have OS4 on my main, and MorphOS on a USB stick. If I want MorphOS I just put the USB stick in before I turn on and it boots from that instead. Simples.

@BigD

I would not worry about the time limit of the current donation campaign, these are purely tentative deadlines, we manage our own schedule based on people's participation, it will postponed for sure.

Not being a commercial based company, but a group of hobbyists purely driven by passion all wanting to have fun, being elastic in our deadline is a necessity, which is an advantage and a disadvantage at the same time, depending on the point-of-view and on the situation.

@virgolamobile

This open ppc laptop is advertised as a Linux laptop.

Is there any contact with Hyperion about porting Amigaos4 to it?

Or do you expect that Hyperion or other parties will take the initiative if/when it is available?

Wil you be able to support driver development like:
- NVMe drivers (incl uboot support).
- Power management
- Battery management
- Multi monitor support ( Without reboot to switch between radeon outputs)
- USB3 chip.

My friends,

I keep looking at this thread, and reading it as "What is the TASTE of Amiga hardware now?"

AH this messy kitchen, oh friends of mine, this crowd of cooks pushing and pulling and twisting and turning, a spicy dash FPGA here, a pinch of stale PPC there, a bittersweet tablespoon of ARM sprinkled all over.

So many flavors, so many ingredients, but in the end - always the same taste:
shyte™©®.

At least, it's low-carb stuff.

PowerPC notebook is endorsed by acube.
So I think yes, there will be an os4 port, and maybe I hope a mos port too.

I agree MOS is two steps forward with Ambient.
On my PegII i can boot os4, mos and Linux Debian 8, it's a great funny machine!

Is it possible to build an Amiga 1200 with the hardware options that are available on the market now?

If you mean building from scratch there is the Re-Amiga 1200 board.

@Rob

Found it https://retrokit.tech/product/reamiga-1200-pcb-v1-5-blue/

I was aware of http://wiki.icomp.de/wiki/Commodore_A1200_Reloaded

Now it would be great if it was still available along with https://www.a1200.net/new-amiga-1200-cases/

Not sure if anyone is reproducing the keyboard assembly.

Actually it looks like such a thing is being worked on https://www.a1200.net/amiga-compatible-mechanical-keyboard/

It's always valuable to read an educated opinion of someone who stopped using OS4 eleven years ago.

@geen_naam

I personally think that without a working prototype being available, any discussion like that is too premature from our side.
How can anybody answer a request of commitment on something that does not exists yet?

The reason of me continuously posting on AmigaOS forums regarding the donation campaign is my attempt to engage with more people. The more we are, the bigger is the chance of success, and, at the same time, the cost per person lowers. Sometimes the feeling of failure get strong when I see that only 65 people donated something, and that is quite sad now that we are so damn close to obtain something that could actually work.

For what it concern a sentence like "will you be able to support..." please, do keep in mind that we are not a company, we are simply a bunch of people trying to having fun dedicating some of our spare time to actually do something instead of waiting for somebody else to act.

Having said that, I hope that somebody in the AmigaOS community will decide to work on drivers by himself . If that will not happen, I could take care of internally discuss the possibility to start a donation campaign to finance an expert programmer, as we are doing for anything else that we were not able to do ourselves.

I hope to get it right, but I think you are the one that worked on the C-Media audio driver (http://os4depot.net/?function=showfile&file=driver/audio/hdaudio_ahi.lha). If that so, I take the opportunity to personally thank you a lot for your hard work, it will benefit the entire community, and I really hope that others will join the game.

Absolutely. He's the one.

Currently there is no new Amiga hardware available, the Amiga Corporation is only selling software.

ACube has announced new Sam460 because AEon will need some time with the competing Tabor.

The AmigaOneX5000 was the last system available under the AmigaOne brand name until now.
