Hi guy's, I used to be very active on here around the time that the AmigaOne came out , I bought one and shipped it to a developer in France but it got broke in transit (my fault).

I haven't been keeping up on what's happened since to be honest, but I would love to put together a machine for my daughter to play Minecraft on, and would love for an amiga like experience, either AmiagaOS or MorphOs.

FYI OS 4.0 had come out the last time I looked.

what's the state of play with the technology and what options are there for hardware at the minute.

Thanks

Aldur

Welcome back, AmigaOS4 has got a few issues at the moment, it seem to be in development limbo as key parts are now split between A-Eon & Hyperion. A-eon is making System v54 but no news on this since, Amiwest 2021.

A1222 was also due, but due to covid, supply issues and the above, it been heavily delayed, again no news since Amiwest 2021.

So a few Sam460 are being made, pre-order it here https://shop.acube-systems.biz/sam-motherboards/123-sam460.html (note that the pre-order price, not the final price)

FPGA Amiga are coming along nicely, find out about the systems here https://amigang.com/hardware-fpga-amigas/

But my personal recommendation would be get yourself a mini PC or a Pi400, get Amikit XE and then that way you can run a great Amiga emulation system and run PC / Linux apps via Rabbit hole, good luck and welcome back

Don't worry. Very little changed since then.

I fear the news of the Amiga world will have you retreat back into another self-imposed exile.

As for a Mincraft machine build with an Amiga-like experience, may I suggest Linux. System 76's Pop!_OS distro is pretty polished.

Minecraft isn't available for Amiga compatible operating systems, but otherwise many things have happened since then :)

There's too much to list and remember, but few main points...

On the hardware side OS4 has got several AmigaOne models more, Sam 440 and 460 models, and support for Pegasos II. The latest flagship being AmigaOne X5000.

On MorphOS the hw support has grown from Pegasos to Pegasos II, Efika, G4 Macs (Mac mini, Powerbook, IBook, Powermac, eMac...), G5 Macs (Powermac, iMac), Sam460, and AmigaOne X5000.

Operating systems and native software selection have advanced on both fronts and in practise you don't need to run 68k software to fill the gaps anymore like you had to do in "your times".

One example is web browsers... several years after the release of the first AmigaOne and OS4, and Pegasoses on MorphOS side, you still had to use old 68k browsers, which were getting more and more obsolete. They didn't even support CSS etc. But then finally the situation started to improve and we started to get WebKit based browsers... at times we've been closer than ever to the mainstream, but then sometimes dropped again. Short browser history goes like this: Sputnik -> Origyn Web Browser -> Odyssey Web Browser -> Wayfarer. And Netsurf somewhere in between, but that lacks some features..

Why not Amiga OS with a Minecraft like experience?

If you in interst in os4 and amigaone stuff, you better off visitin amigaworld.net which lately are place of all sort of crap, but not amiga related. There is only one normal place for amigaos4 related stuff : amigans.net

It was long ago then, since that time few major versions out and many updates as well. Currently the latest one is amigaos4.1 FE update2 released year ago. If you on old amigaone machine such as a1 or microa1, or something of that sort you will be fine with just FE update2. If you have something modern like sam460 / x1000 / x5000/ etc, then you can use modern RadeonHD/RX video cards so you will in needs to buy Enhancer package from amikit, which containt 2d and 3d drivers for and stuff like that.

There are only one minecraft kind clone for amigaos4, but it use Warp3DNOVA , which mean you need modern enough hardware and radeonHD/RX card. There is: http://os4depot.net/?function=showfile&file=game/misc/amicraft.lha

I also works on port of Minetest for OS4 , but so far didn't finished it:

If you want to play with all the latest stuff and so everything will be good and fast, you need X5000 or at least X1000 with RadeonRX or RadeonHD card + latest OS4 FE update2 + Enhancer package.

The fall of Moo Bunny, resulted some outcast looking for new place, Amigaword was in disarray, between camps, after site owner and admins decided to become more inclusive, and lots of x86 vs PPC wars, legal disputes and all kind of crap. Site funding was lost, site owner sold it to Trever, now moderator’s lost interest. This site has become a different place, you go here not to find what people working on, its please you go to, see what silly idea someone who no technical knowledge comes up with.

Losing a computer worth so much like an A1 is a sad story.

The hardware options for AOS4 are not really better now.

But you can use AOS3.x on UAE or AROS if you want to develop something useful.

everytime I see one of these messages I wonder what type of reaction the same type of post on pornhub would be.

@aldur

My OS4 system is very old now (purchased in 2004), but I still use it three or four days a week. Mainly for surfing Amiga websites, tinkering with ARexx, writing, painting, and playing some favourite old time games.

I use AWeb, IBrowse, NetSurf, Odyssey and Origyn (aka OWB) web browsers.

IMHO, MorphOS currently has the best web browser called Wayfarer.
