Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Server will be down Saturday the 21st of January from midnight UK time (1 am CET
posted by sibbi on 20-Jan-2023 9:02:30 (1237 reads)
Hi,

We've experienced multiple hardware lockups in the last month and I've issued a request to Server4You to run a full hardware check (which takes about 4-6 hours) at midnight UK time (1 am CET) on the morning of Saturday the 21st

The site will be unavailable from midnight UK time (or 1 am CET) and until early in the morning for this reason.

We apologize for the inconvenience

Edit: So that went well...In the end, after multiple rounds of crashes it was discovered that CPU 2 had a level 1 cache error which was causing the server to lockup randomly, even in Recovery mode. After that was eventually fixed with a spare server (motherboard probably the culprit) the mirrored RAID was in a state which needed quite a bit of sorting.

It's taken me a bit of time after I managed to fix that to get the server booting again, different network card which needed different settings and some other minor variations which caused the server not fully boot to a ready state. Unfortunately I don't have console access to the server, just remote, so taking the server in and out of recovery mode and trying again is a slow and inefficient way to go about this, so I'm sorry for all the time this has taken. Let's hope we're back.

Sadly nothing was found, but the server suffered another hardware lockup before it was checked.

If this keeps happening we might have to migrate to another server

Does this explain why amigaworld.net has been down for everyone including me? I only found out I missed the weekend outage. But the frozen server could explain why it's been going down.

Yeah there was a long downtime. The server crashed and then they went through with a 6 hour hardware check which passed.

I've enabled some kernel crash debugging, should help to isolate this hopefully.

Heaven knows. It is so rough when you cannot be AT the hardware.
Then .. when you get access to it .. it is in a damn refrigerated environment. You cannot get to the power plug. For me .. **some one with a cable organization fetish made it IMPOSSIBLE** to know which power plug went with .. with THE THING with very small led where it took a flash light to see what "icon" was associated with it and ... how are you going to seek what such an icon means with no words? It is a secure facility, so no camera capable equipment is allowed in most places ... the server room being one of them.

4 blanking hours to come up with a simple, sequential order follow (with the *hard* learned time you MUST patiently wait) between a step (thank God not many such steps) Rant ... rant.

My heart is with you. Tell me your favorite charity and I will give some to it. I /really/ do not facing that sort of situation with precious little informed thanks. TOTALLY not what my job I'm being paid to do. I will GLADLY give some to it.

Yeah it's certainly been interesting, I don't have all day to work on this either obviously so I've had to do this in multiple rounds of a few hours a day.

As far as I'm concerned it's all part of the community effort, there are still people who prefer and use this site and we're working on a way to build something towards the future, the site design is old, it's difficult or near impossible to maintain or work on, and I'd really like to move to something more modern in terms of a server as well.

Hopefully we'll have some news of that effort soon.

@sibbi
Thank you so much for the hard work you put into this. Maintaining web servers for a lot of years now, I can feel the pain to fix something like that and keep everything up and running.
