Software News   Software News : Better quality AmigaOS4 Video of native P96 drivers
posted by MikeB on 12-Jul-2004 5:04:29 (10105 reads)
Due to criticism regarding Crisot's first video, the beta-tester created a new video (24.7 MB file) to demonstrate the speed of OS4 running with a native version of P96 combined with an accelerated Voodoo 3 driver. This version shows almost no flickering and also shows Quake launching and running.

Like with the previous video this is not an official OS4 demonstration.

Very nice speed of the OS.

And well done video.

Reminded me of how I once presented my A4000 to my PC using school mates.
After 5-10 minutes of going throuh 20-30 applications in multitasking, flicking through sreens ... draging HUGE JPG pictures around while they were still loading, playing MODs all the time without sound cracking, etc...

And after that I was kind of waiting for their comments about it. They seemed a little bit puzzled... And said something like "so?". They did not manage to understand what they saw.

(as a matter of fact they most likely expected to see (just) some amazing games .... seeing FinalWriter, WordWorth, etc... indicated to them that it's just another PC)

It's not only the speed of OS4 that's amazing, but also how fast Crisot is moving with the mouse Thanks for the new video, Crisot

Cheers

Yeah, it seems almost as though he is caught up in the speed of OS4 so he can't slow down!

Kinda gives an overall "fastforward" feeling combined with the OS speed? Maybe that's why the trolls have a hard time believing! Looking closely though you do see him hesitate from time to time.

Brilliant to see this! I wonder how it reacts under a Radeon card with native drivers?

Does anyone know if this video was shot using the DMA IDE driver?

The only slowdown appeared to be the actual directory scanning/icon rendering.

Otherwise this is looking pretty good!

Just out of curiosity:
What technique was used in this video, to get rid of the flickering?

Only kidding!!!

Original video is 640x480 but because of divx and size I must reduce.

Manual iris would have been better as some parts are over exposed, but overall its an improvement on the previous video, did you change the refresh rate to reduce the video flicker?

Hi,
I don't want to ruin all the optimistic ppl here, but is OS4.0 really that fast?
I mean, you can still see things getting updated (esspecially when scrolling in a window with icons).
And this is very fast hardware if you compare it with the classic Amiga's, but it doesn't look that much faster. For me it feels like the hardware speed increase is MUCH MUCH bigger than the speed increase I see in overall usage.
Is this possible? If so, what are the main reasons for this?

You do realise that some people thought that this video was actially faked because it was so fast?

Answering your question, the vastly improved Intuition requires quite a bit more processing power than the 3.x Intuition.

Running it on an 060/50 is quite slow.

The demo was done on a Voodoo 3 and some apps you see are still emulated.

Having said that, I personally thought it was very impressive.

well.. here im using a not very fast PC (P3 650 mhz) and TNT2 graphicscard and Windows 98. Of course OS4.0 looks MUCH better I think. But draggingthe windows in the movie isn't much faster then windows98 and the scrolling(see icons in the window) is even very noticable slower then in windows98.
Don't get me wrong.. OS4.0 looks very usable(in speed and of course, like the classic Amiga's, in being very intuitive)... but to say it's impressive in speed... no, on the first look of it totally not.
Maybe it's different if you're actually using the system, but that I can't try

and IMHO, is more impressive the previous one.

Ciao

>Windows 98.

Try using a modern operating system like Windows XP on that very same hardware.

I'm impressed by the speed.

I do have a Radeon 7500 GFX card.
So how fast are the new drivers on this card?

Since when does Win 98 have Windowsdragging filled with bitmaps?

I think win98 is much slower. Even the XP Win computer I used to watch the movie clip doesn't drag windows as a single block of GFX. You just see how some parts of the window are build up, specially parts of the screen behind that window.

@SkEb

>I don't want to ruin all the optimistic ppl here, but is OS4.0 really that fast?

As fast as shown.

>I mean, you can still see things getting updated (esspecially when scrolling in a window with icons).

IIRC, icon handling was one of the slowest things also in AOS3.9 with CV64-3D etc.

I have not tested with the those same icons (24bit PNG??? or 256color) in AOS3.x, but if there was about hundred icons on AOS3.x window, WB was pretty much halted for 30+ seconds untill icons were loaded. Now AOS4 could be something like ... 120* faster???

>And this is very fast hardware if you compare it with the classic Amiga's, but it doesn't look that much faster.

If I have understood it correctly there are a lot of things to improve.
I think those drivers are the first PPC native ones, without optimizations.
Also things like intuition is either in 68k or "just" patched & recompiled. (those who know are free to tell the situation)
CORRECTION: it seems the intuition has gone through some bigger updates

>For me it feels like the hardware speed increase is MUCH MUCH bigger than the speed increase I see in overall usage.

Is it? What can we compare it to?
MOS might be the only thing there is to compare to, other systems are too dfferent, more fixed icons, etc. MOS has more mature 2D drivers I think (actively used&fixed&improved for about 2 years).
http://www.clubbyte.com/pegasos/videos.htm (I think I stillI see icons loading etc..)

Not sure if the advances of 2D GFX HW speed are that big when comparing (Voodoo3) to my Virge3D chip..., really, gfx focus has gone towards 3D.

>Is this possible? If so, what are the main reasons for this?

Most likely drivers and AOS4 GFX code is mostly unoptimized.

don't get me wrong, I like the AmigaOS more than windows... but is OS4.0 more advanced than windows98 right now that I should compare OS4.0 to windowsXP?
And even if OS4.0 is more advanced, should that mean that it should be slower? Ok, OS4.0 has transparrency, windows98 not. But I don't think that has impact on the speed differences I was talking about.

"I like the AmigaOS more than windows... "
IMO: AOS4 should be like AOS3.9. Only faster + some new features.

"but is OS4.0 more advanced than windows98 right now that I should compare OS4.0 to windowsXP?"
They are different. IMO: no use to do too serious comparisson.
(different feature sets, diferent advantages, etc)

"And even if OS4.0 is more advanced, should that mean that it should be slower?"
If AOS4 would be slower, Hyperion&co would have f*cked things up really hard.
This 2.6 Ghz P4 looks like a snail in glue when comparing to AOS4.

" Ok, OS4.0 has transparrency, windows98 not. But I don't think that has impact on the speed differences I was talking about."

With the same kind of HW, AOS4.0 final needs to be a lot faster than W98, otherwise it does not deserve the name AmigaOS.

AOS4 seems a lot faster than those windoze machines that I need to use daily.
(perhaps these x86 boxes that I use are all broken)
