Heh, I saw this news item less than five minutes after telling my wife that I'd unfortunately again need to run some cables to my A1 when I move it back into the other room in a few days, "because there are no wireless solutions for the A1 yet".

But only 11 Mb/s? Our (her) PCs and our router run 802.11g, i.e. 54 Mb/s. Wonder if it will slow everything down to put an 802.11b device on there. And what about encryption support etc?

No the only machine going at that speed will be the A1. The rest of the network won't be slowed down.

I thought it does have a negative impact to have 802.11b devices on your network.

My Linksys router can be set to 802.11g only mode to get better results. But since my Sony Clie UX 50 is 802.11b only, I can't use that mode.

My A1 is wired to the router, so I'll wait until a 802.11g solutions comes along.

Neil Cafferkey wrote the Amiga driver and he kindly tested it with these cards to ensure compatibility.

Also we have had testing help in the last two months from a few A1 owners; the most recent being, Mick Sutton who spared some free time to test the card.

Although the card has worked well in normal AmigaOne's, it has unfortunately not worked in AmigaKit's micro A1-C which has been baffling to say the least.

The card is recognised OK by PCIScan. It seems to initialise OK by Roadshow, but will simply not work- packets just get lost. If anyone has any ideas why this card doesn't work in our microA1-C then please email us. This is the reason that at the moment, we cannot say this microA1 compatible.

I'm with Realize on this one..

Is it SANA-II compatible? Does it follow AmigaOS4 standards for installing
network/hardware? Or is it proprietary software?
If proprietary software I'm not interrested.

Why not make it support the most used chip instead and make it
compatible with any card using that chip?
And sell the driver by itself or with a card of the shelf?

Also why not 54Mbps support instead? Or is this coming later?

Btw not to sound too negative GOOD WORK getting AmigaOS4 wireless networking!!!

It's Neil Cafferkey's prism2.device, which has been ported to OS4 previously. WIll work with a wide variety of 802.11b cards that use the ubiqitous 'prism2/orinocco/hermes' chipset.

The driver is written by another person, and it's for a specific chipset that provides 802.11b, so there is no point in asking for 54Mbps unless someone writes a new driver for those chipsets, or the author of this device goes out and writes another driver, for another chipset.

The driver will work with any card that has of course, that has the right chipset, but Amigakit obviously provides support etc for usage of the specific card they sell.

Most wireless routers in the past 2 or so years are dual channel simulataneously, meaning you won't have any slowdown on the rest of your wireless network. Older routers were single mode only, and could run 802.11b or 802.11g, but would force the entire network to the lowest speed. That's likely not the case if you've bought a router in recent years.

It's a good first effort- the price is reasonable at ~$28USD, and anyone only using the wireless for Internet access via DSL or broadband cable won't see any speed slowdowns, as the bandwidth is higher than your Net connection.

On the other hand...anyone running 802.11g and/or 100BaseT or GigEthernet and using to transfer files between systems....it won't make much sense.

Personally, I'm SOL either way, as I'll have a uA1, but I've also already got a GigE switch to plug it into, so not a big deal.

If someone ever gets a clue about designing a good case for the uA1 that HAS A HANDLE ON IT, and is small, then I'd be in the market for a 802.11g card that works with the uA1...

Thanks for the answers.

Btw shouldn't there be a network.device and wirelessnetwork.device or
only one network.device if possible. All supported chips should be in a
separate drawer. Otherwise the "DEVS:" will get seriously cluttered when
support for multiple hardware becomes available.
Also same type of code shouldn't be rewritten all the time by people that
want to support this stuff.

How does OS4 do this?
