Hardware News   Hardware News : OS4 to support the Silicon Image 3114 serial ATA board
   posted by tactica on 9-Mar-2005 23:03:06 (9604 reads)
A driver for the Silicon Image 3114 board is about to start the OS4 betatesting cycle. Stéphane Guillard is again the man doing the magic, and Max ("Soft3") Tretene the one supplying the hardware.

The 3114 is a PCI based 4-port Serial ATA controller. See the official specs here.

Anyone know any cdrw drivers which have SATA? I would love to convert to sata if only to lessen the clutter in my desktop case.

I'm so glad to see this. I am in the center of Silicon Valley. When I got my A1XE, I went out to buy an ATA 100 HD and an ATI 7000. The computer stores around here only carry the latest high tech stuff. They only had SATA hard disks. They only had the latest graphics cards as well. I had to buy my ATA 100 HD and ATI 7000 on line. With this support for this controller, I'll be able to pick up disks at the local stores again!

@Bodie

I have never seen CD or DVD drives with a SATA interface.

@Bodie

Yep, like Toaks said... get yourself an adapter like this one (or similiar):

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-998-001&depa=0

They are really cheap, and allow you to get rid of that extra cable clutter inside your case.

Great, more hardware support the better!

I was wondering though if we are going to get a SCSI card supported in the future! I have a SCSI drive I would really like to use from my A3000. I bought it new and shortly after my A3000 went to Amiga Heaven.

@Bodie
yes, plextor makes a sata DVD+/-RW drive:
http://www.plextor.be/products/px-712sa.asp?choice=PX-712SA
and:
http://www.plextor.be/products/px-716SA.asp?choice=PX-716SA

although its a DVD+/-RW drive, it'll burn you CD-RW's too

OnTopic:
i noticed the Chip is a 33/66mhz PCI part, and knowing that the A1 have a 66mhz PCI slot next to the AGP slot. the question pops to mind: Will this card work at 66mhz PCI (266MB/s) in the A1?, and will this cut into the AGP bandwith?

would be nice to have a 266MB/s pci slot for a 150MB/s Sata chip.. instead of the normal 133MB/s PCI slot. (yes i know the drives are not that fast, but with 4 drives connected, there will be a lot af traffic going on)

{edit: Oops - completely wrong!}

Great work guys!

Are we still allowed to use the phrase "keep the momentum going"? or should that be relegated to a dark period in our history?

Hi,

For the sake of completeness, the next release of the SiI 3112 driver will also support the SiI3512 chip.

This way, the whole SATA PCI line of Silicon Image chips is supported under OS4 (3112, 3512, 3114) + their PATA UDMA133 chip (SiI680).

Kind regards,
--
Stéphane

Its all very well saying you are writing drivers for these devices (its good it really is). But what actual hardware is supported (ie examples of PCI cards with these chips on would be good please, as most on-line shops dont actually tell you the boards have an SI chip on them).

I cant answer this.

There is no way of knowing which chip is on a "branded" SATA board if it is not advertised...

The only thing I can say is, my drivers will work with any branded PCI board which sports a 3112, a 3512 or a 3114, because those branded boards are just clones of the SiI reference design. Obviously this is true for any expansion board those days, an nVidia GeForce 6800-based video board is the same wherever you buy it from.

Any chance of getting drivers for SATA/USB2 combo PCI cards anytime soon?

This would save lots of people having to get there mobos fixed (as both onboard IDE and USB would not be needed).

@all

What is the difference between sii3112 and sii3114?

Edit: I mean feature wise of course.

The last number seems to be the number of SATA channels the chip has. So I would say the 3112 is 2-port and the 3114 is 4-port. (3114 is 4-port for sure and 3512 is 2-port, but I can't find the 3112 on the sil homepage.)

@AmiDog

I didn't find it either but my Amithlon mainboard has an 3112A built-in with 2 ports. Don't know what the "A" stands for but it also have a hardware RAID0/1 included (Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0).

@Mark

Looks like any of these Syba brand will work:

http://www.syba.com/us/en/product/43/02/index.html

These cards from PPA International are Silicon Image based cards, but I cannot see which chipset is used for each:

http://www.ppa-usa.com/product_pages/sata.htm

Or this one from Vantec:

http://www.vantecusa.com/p_ugtst200.html

I'm sure there are other brands, and as people start trying them out, the list of "officially working" cards will get added to sites like Intuitionbase.

@Radfoo

Like the one on the bottom right in the PPA-USA link I just posted? That one also has firewire. It would be great for those who would like to add all of these functions to a MicroA1, but only have one slot.

sprocki:

the A,M,I,G,A,R,U,L,E or Z etc behind the number is just a tag and doesnt mean much regarding if it will work or not with the driver.

this goes for most hw, like a hp5500 printer driver works on hp5500A , hp5500U etc.
