News   News : The new amiga.com
posted by mjohnson on 18-Mar-2005 10:21:04 (13869 reads)
The new Amiga Inc. website has finally been unveiled.

Apart from the updated design and new content, there are also a few interesting news item, especially this one: "KMOS, Inc. announces the formal change of its corporate name and legal identity to Amiga, Inc."

It also seems that AmigaAnywhere is back in the game, now released at version 1.5

Have to agree on the layout part both graphical and the cluttered text.

But it is a move forwards as it finally has a consistent look all over the sub sites and it has lots of relevant information which must be years since last time.

I like the new website, i find it simple and elegant. Anyway i want to see much more OS4 informations on it... not only AmigaDE.

Well...

Looks like its all DE then! Perhaps I am being unfair but this line is interesting:

'Please note, the development of future versions of the Amiga Operating System is not available for third party development or distribution.'

As is: 'Amiga, Inc. does not distribute or support AmigaOS 4.0. '

I agree the site looks worse than before but maybe they can build on it. Some of the editorial is a bit suspect too.

At least it's here! Jackpot looks cool too. Let's not over criticise just yet and give KMOS sometime to orientate themselves - they've been asleep for a long time!

Good:

New information, pleased to hear about AmigaAnywhere 1.5 SDK - although not so pleased that I can't access the information about it (my developer login works, but tells me I need to be licenced to access the information). Would like to know how much it'll cost me to upgrade to 1.5, and if it'll work on a more recent version of x86 Linux (better yet, support OS4 but unlikely).

It's early days so bound to be more stuff soon - plus we have the IRC session on Sunday to look forward to.

Bad:

Not as much information as I would've hoped for.

The forums don't seem to be working at the moment (but hey, put it down to teething trouble - unless they've been ditched forever!).

Ugly:

Not sure about the design. I quite liked the old one.

At first glance, I thought Amiga had become an online casino

Quite strange considering that "the world's leading mobile multimedia engine" is nowhere used.

...what a dissapointment...yet again...silly me, here i was hoping (yet again) for things to improve, for a decent good looking website, hell i even thought they would mention something about new products or cheaper amigaone hardware or ...

Oh well... let's just hope that Hyperion keeps up the good work. The rest isn't of any importance and hasn't been for the last 10 years.

IMO the new site looks OK - it's easy to navigate, easy to read.

My only thought would be that the front page should be the "About Amiga Inc." page - it looks more professional, and gives people visiting for the first time the right first impression (not to mention the necessary relevant details...)

That really is the most hideous looking website I've seen in a long long time...

Why not get someone like ClickBoom to design their site? They always do nice sites... At least someone with a bit of professionalism about their work.

This worries me. It really should be asked from Garry Hare what this means.

To answer Your question, I think I will make a quote:

Quote:
Amiga, Inc. does not distribute or support AmigaOS 4.0. For information on product availability, support, local dealers or resellers, please contact AmigaOne Partners through either Hyperion VOF or Eyetech Ltd.

But where are the old CAM articles That is a thing I am going to ask in the "IRC meeting".

The site look quite worse for me, aniway the important part is not the look

KMOS is now Amiga Inc. ? Ok this is not a great news imho, maybe the most important think is the AmigaAnyware 1.5 release, although I've hoped that the new site spoken about an integration between AmigaOS4 and AmigaDE or similar like that

I've hoped also a better AmigaOS4 section, but ...

Aniway, better than nothing ...

Here we go again. All about AmigaDE which goes nowhere! Well, maybe it is a good thing they keep there hands off of the AmigaOne/OS 4.0. We could stand a better chance of suceeding without them!

In 2001, Amiga, Inc. licensed the development of AmigaOS 4.0 to AmigaOne Partners, collectively Hyperion VOF and Eyetech Group Ltd. Now scheduled for commercial release in early 2005

Didn't anyone notice that they just told us when it will be done!!!
I imagine that it's not speculation as Hyperion haven't made wild claims, and they would have given AmigaInc the time. So its any time before July then.
And what does VOF stand for?

Guys, get a grip and read it in context.....AmigaInc does not provide support for AOS4. We know they don't as they are just going to go back to Hyperion anyway. It doesn't mean AmigaInc aren't supporting its further development.

The thing about this site is that my own is better and I'm only a programmer not a web designer. Its not slick at all. Most of the pages don't even resize to 800 res, which my blind brother has set. Jeez. Its like some sorta highschool assignment. A dogs breakfast. The kids who created this website could say "a dog ate my website". Gosh, I even offerred my services for free when KMOS came out...."ah, we don't need any help on a website. Thanks for all the offers." was the gist of what they said. Goodness, they need help. This is a really half assed job. There's so much creativity in the community and they come out with this. Did they even look at Genesi's or dare I say Apple's. That's the competition guys and you're blowing it. So much for making a good first impression. I coulda knocked up something better than this in a day..as well as thinking up the content..and no, I am not kidding or exaggerating either and you know it. In fact, I have never seen such a poor Amiga related website.

Ok. Going back to my happy place now.

This website is not what I hoped it would be. It looks really unprofessional. How hard can it be. I am sure there are plenty of talented people out the who are willing to design the new homepage for free. The easiest way is to start a contest and the best design wins. And let the community vote.

when you click on the now showing solitare it takes you to

https://www.amiga.com/shop/?prod_id=56&cat_id=11

Word search game but with scrable logo and wordsearch screen shots

I would have liked to see more about OS4 on there but as it says these are the responsibility of the AmigaOne Partners and is probably the way hyperion and eyetech want it to remain, in control of the a1-os4 project.

Still its better than the last website which was released in the gateway days.

I was hoping that once the DE-shop reopened i could buy planet-z for my new pda but alas it doesn't seem to be available anymore. lets hope for an OS4 port some day.

Any news on fleecy ?
Who's doing the external testing of the DE IDE then ?
