News   News : The new amiga.com
posted by mjohnson on 18-Mar-2005 10:21:04 (13632 reads)
The new Amiga Inc. website has finally been unveiled.

Apart from the updated design and new content, there are also a few interesting news item, especially this one: "KMOS, Inc. announces the formal change of its corporate name and legal identity to Amiga, Inc."

It also seems that AmigaAnywhere is back in the game, now released at version 1.5

IIRC the TAO stuff runs on Symbian and Palm - how the AA part would get ported is a mystery though.

Edit: Intent 2 white-paper

Just to clarify though I checked amiga.com - which still considers 2 Operating Systems to be a "wide variety". (Linux, Windows CE .NET, Windows 2000, and Windows XP).

@slash

please don't tell me you are one of those people who only like macromedia crudola pages with tens minutes of flash playing in the background.

HTML works good and is fast on any machine. the CCS they have running is goobage so that should be scrapped. I personnaly think CSS was a bad idea from day one. It was an idea dreamed up by people who don't know or understand the perpose of HTML. If you want to lock the look of your document use a PDF.
Yes the look is not great but is certainly not horrible.
Please I hate corporate sites that run Shockwave or macromedia crude leave that #%#$% for the cine sites where it belongs.

@mbilla

I don't read it like that at all.

I read it to mean future versions of the Amiga Operating System will be done IN HOUSE not by a 3rd party. Considering how straped for money the "old Amiga Inc." was for money Hyperion has saved the day and were very much needed, still are.

That got me to the idea Hyperion perhaps could be more connected legally to Amga Inc. and continue their excellent work.

Just my $.02

This for me would be a dream come true. Hyperion = Amiga Inc OS section.

Once I found the news section I think the site was ok, but didn't like the "JACKPOT!" stuff on the main page, looks just like ugly spam popups from internet explorer, but ok. :)

God this thread makes me sick. This is so typical of what the Amiga community has become. KMOS/Amiga finnaly seems to be making some progress and all we do is bitch about it. Give me a break.

This could mean many things and they are not all doom and gloom. Hyperion has a license to develope OS 4 not all future versions. Big woop. I doubt Amiga Inc would kill the operating system. There is just no reason to kill it if they don't even have to support it financially. It's more likely that they want to bring the development of future versions in house.

If they announced THAT "website" and THEN this appeared....!?!? Isn`t amiga.com hacked??? It just can`t be this is for real!???

Give me a friggan break.

WHAT DID YO GUYS EXPECT??? Did you think this would be it? Did you think they were going to announce some multi billion dollar distribution deal? Did you think you were going to see Amiga OS running everywhere starting today.

Hehe, a graphical artist who thinks a website is underdesigned. How quaint

Personally, I belong to the design school of "less design, please". I found the webpage to be browsable. That's the important thing for me. No javascript-css-menues that doesn't work on my browser, no java, no flash, just a website. Thank you, Amiga Inc.

Now, as for content. Here I must say there's not enough. Yet. Hopefully this isn't the last incarnation of the AI website we see.

OI! I refute that. There is good design or bad design. If you over or under design something its bad. It should suit the purpose. Designers do not just put things in for the sheer hell of it.

Design = Function and Aesthetics. Neither of these are all that on this site. While its may not be an easy task to alter the functionality, it can certainly be dressed up a little. For example - the shade of blue used is all wrong.

I don't understand all this negative stuff.

I am pleased that there is an updated Amiga.com site and
it is not so bad as manny of you say. It is light and better
then the AmigaAnywhere site and it is a follow up of the
AmigaOS site, where nobody had any comments about.

I just hope that there will be something about OS4 and
the A1 series when it will be officialy launched.

Let's be possitive guys.

Good to see a some activity , but this is disappointing, I was expecting more. It's just not very good for a serious IT company, is it? They should have extended the look of the original page throughout and kept most of the content, not got rid of it, where's the OS4 feature set, graps, community pages etc? And updated the news section.

Compare it to genesi's site...

http://www.genesi.lu/

...I was expecting something nice and proffessional like the above.

Reading some of the info, i.e. 'the company' gets me wondering what Amiga Incs all about, do they even know themselves? What have they really got to do with Amiga?

right now. this will unfortunally change in the next months. but maybe we get lucky and linux will gain more of the space left by palmos then wince

yeah. sometimes waking up isn't funny

imo amigaanywhere is a kind of tax-saving trick. like the whole carp with changing the name or sell themselfs to kmos. or something like this. it sounds like a very common thing in east-european countries: if a company gets to many debts or other problems they sell everyting to another company and leave the debts and problems with the old name. you can get nothing from them because they own nothing. the new campany is either called very similar to the old name or gets the old name after while when no one can sue them. just like here. they had some fun with bbrv and suddenly we heard everything is sold to kmos. now kmos becomes amiga inc and the same people "work" there.

maybe we get a chance to purchase a new t-shirt on sunday :D

I don't care so much of it looks nifty and all but I do care about some news. And that I don't see. I don't call what's on there groundbraking news or somethings that will raise my eyebrowse. So KMOS becomes Amiga Inc. Besides that you only got "The launch of DE 1.5". Which is still being tested. Correct me if I am wrong but that is not a launch. Launching would mean I can get it now. But I can't. Also do you have to pay for it? Is it free for current developers? That would be some good info. And are we going to leave the site like that for the next months? So not really anything new. Except from KMOS becoming Amiga Inc. and the "launch" of DE 1.5, oh well.

Sounds like it means Hyperion has "exclusive" rights to the developement
of AmigaOS. Could also be the opening salvo of another battle with someone
working on a morphed "future version" of AmigaOS.

C'mon Bob. Let's turn it around, they do something and we all have to sing and praise the lord. This is called critisism Bob. I know we should not trash them in the ground but this is just critisism. Sorry if I don't break out the guitar and play and sing and praise everyone. I am not talking about the layout but I am talking about the news. Nothing new.

@BobW

Everyone is reacting to the First Impression they get when you ENTER the site,
(default page) having a huge picture of a gambling game.

I can see Ainc's reasoning behind this, "Spotlight on "JACKPOT!" for Mobile Gaming"
(rewarding developers) but the implementation is all wrong.
It could have been an advert about a third of its current size and not taking centre stage on the web page.

The rest of the site is fine, just the FIRST IMPRESSION !

Cheers,
Tim

I'm pretty sure you dont get the main idea: content and structure = html, design = css. it's simple. and besides, I'm pretty sure the folks who invented css undersand html very good: they invented it too :)

Quote:

so that's the exactly oposite of css. css allows the author to look the page like he wants it to be AND it alowes the user (reader) to change it like he wants it to be. you can define your own stylesheet, make it more important then the default one and ovverride the page with your own colors or fonts or sizes or whatever. of course not on amiga - you need a recent browser :) on amiga you stick to the author's idea. or lack of it.

the new amiga site is just crap. no matter if it uses css or flash or whatever. it looks like 10000 other pages, is full of errors and looks like made 5 years ago. a shame.

I haven't read all the posts on this 'topic/news' but i just saw the 'new' Amiga, Inc. website and... and... and... What's this? I liked the other look better. Ok, they are trying to do something, but they could have done better for a start, couldn't they!?

Anyway, i can't get any worse! With time, they will improve the site way better than it is! Keep the faith! I still believe...

P.S.: i uploaded a new avatar. i hope you guys/gals like it, since some of my friends sometimes call me 'alien' just for fun, i thought it was time to put one that really looked like an alien and what better avatar than the ACTUAL alien from the movies!? A grey alien would be good too but i only found this one!
