Hardware News   Hardware News : P.A. Semi Unveils New PPC Multicore Processor Family
   posted by Eric_S on 24-Oct-2005 11:29:59 (7531 reads)
Official press release [Thanks to Fisk for the link].

A The Inquirer article on said chip [Thanks to DrBombcrater for the link].

Today P.A. Semi announced the PA6T-1682M. A new multicore, low power PPC chip that is stated to dissapate between 5-13 watts running at 2Ghz, with a high level of integration (memory controller PCI-E, Ethernet, etc).

Read on for select bits of the official press release:

THE PWRficient PROCESSOR ROLLOUT

The first PWRficient chip, the PA6T-1682M, which dissipates between just 5-13 watts, depending upon the application, is a dual-core implementation running at 2GHz with two DDR2 memory controllers, 2MB of L2 cache, and a flexible I/O subsystem that supports eight PCI Express controllers, two 10 Gigabit Ethernet XAUI controllers, and four Gigabit Ethernet SGMII controllers sharing 24 serdes lanes. It will sample in the third calendar quarter of 2006, with single-core and quad-core versions due in early and late 2007, respectively, and an eight-core version planned for 2008.

PWRficient ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS

The PWRficient family of platform processors is derived from a common set of fundamental architectural elements. A coherent, ordered crossbar called CONEXIUMTM interconnects multiple Power cores, L2 caches, memory controllers, and the ENVOITM I/O subsystem. ENVOI combines a set of configurable serdes lanes with a set of protocol controllers for such I/O standards as PCI Express, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

These controllers share a bridge to CONEXIUM, as well as a set of centralized DMA channels, offload engines, and a coherent I/O cache. The architecture supports a variety of offload engines, including support for TCP/IP, iSCSI, cryptography (IPSec and SSL), and RAID. This layered, scalable architecture results in versatile single-chip solutions that can be quickly developed by combining the appropriate number of Power cores, memory controllers, and L2 caches with a suitable number of serdes lanes and protocol controllers.

P.A. Semi also employs a unique scalable-socket plan, which provides several options for performance upgrades or cost reductions with little or no design effort. P. A. Semi defines a "socket" (package, pinout, and power envelope) by the number of memory controllers (up to four), the number of serdes I/O lanes (up to 32), and the supported system peripherals. Each socket supports several performance levels by varying the number of cores (up to eight on a chip) and the size of the L2 cache (up to 8MB). Within a socket definition, processors are tailored to different applications by adjusting the number and type of the high-speed I/O protocols (for example PCI Express, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, SATA/SAS, RapidIO, and Fibre Channel). Initial socket definitions include the "E" socket (entry), "M" socket (midrange), and "P" socket (performance). Customers can design to a specific socket, instead of a specific processor, to enable easy migration to compatible processors.

Don't forget the 1361E single-core processor.

It is amazing. Hopefully Troika buys from them or they create desktops with their cpus.

FYI the people who designed this also designed the Alpha, StrongARM (now known as XScale), the Opteron and more...

It seems to be similar-ish to the Freescale 8641 but the cores are completely different (they are 2GHz 64bit PPC) and the internal switch fabric is different.

@Hattig

I don't see anything in the article about the 1361E being PowerPC compatible. Is it even in the same series as the PowerPC compatible chip?

@Samurai_Crow

If you look at the linked page, you'll see that it uses the same core (PS6T) as the 1682M. That and the IO is a bit different, the 1682M can use 10GbE and has got 24 SERDES ports instead of 16 like the 1361E.

@doc
> has this anything to do with amiga at all??

Today, this second? Nope. Take it as 'general tech news' if you'd prefer.

> ... or is this another one of them "i wish we could use this instead of..." or "i hope troika or eyetech see this and want to use..."

It's general technology news. This is obviously more relevant to AOS and the future than the next Intel roadmap being published.

> crap... there will never be any hightech amiga yet, letting these wet dreams go public have become boring and are a wayst of time...

Ok, no need for you to read or comment then, right?

>its the troika motorboard,
Probably.

> ack ppc card
Maybe, depending on who you ask.

>and the dragon that is the amiga reality..
What, no mention of shark?

There's a difference between today and the future. Feel free to never read anything that might discuss the future. Oh wait, all 3 of the above mentioned are the future, so what IS your problem?

Lighten up, read or don't if it's not of interest to you.

Why not? It's a potential target for the OS to run on at some point. I rather enjoy these sorts of threads, learning about technology and what's available or coming soon. Pondering how we might make use of such things and what benefits or weakneses it may have compared to other offerings.

As long as new things aren't presented in a "Eyetech and Hyperion shold do this, and I won't shut up about it until they do" fashion, I like seeing these news items. The Gamecube guy on amiga.org has surely far overdone his thing, but that wasn't really possible to begin with, but this chip does have some possibilities to it if someone has the time and money to do it.

I hope to continue learning about new PPC chips, Cell, southbridges, etc. on this web site, as this is where I first heard about this chip, 8641, Uli's M1573, etc. that all have been fun to read about and discuss, in my opinion at least.

I can't see how the Mac people would not know about this?

Yet they made the stupid move.

They mentioned VMX on their web site. This point's to something similar like the 970. POWER does not have VMX, this has been introduced with the 970 and can run in Altivec mode. But there was no clear statement, if the PowerPC ISA is supported or only POWER... we'll see. But at least another PPC vendor, which means competition in the PPC market. Good for prices and availability - I hope.

This looks interesting. Fast, low power, versatile advanced features and potential for low
cost. It kinda reminds me of the Transmeta splash and their Crusoe chip.

I’m not much of a geek so I did a quick “Google” on Transmeta and found they are still at
it but I don’t hear much about them in the general tech media. This similarity between
Transmeta’s announcement and this one may account for d0c’s comments.

Does anyone know how Transmeta is doing and what impact they are having?

Transmeta being used here. That's the only one I know of.

PowerPC ISA and POWER ISA are the one and the same and have been for several years.
Aside from VMX the 970 and POWER 4/5 are binary compatible with each other. POWER also supports other iSAs but that's a different matter.

VMX and AltiVec are the same thing.
In other words it'll run PowerPC stuff (32 or 64 bit) with AltiVec.

Transmeta went up against a 600lb gorilla (Intel) and lost (even though their later designs are meant to be very good). There is no 600lb gorilla in the PowerPC world so the situation is not the same.

They eventually found they made more money from licensing their low power tech than from making chips so they've given up making chips altogether.

They now just do low power stuff for other companies, a future version of the Cell will use Transmeta tech. They also have people at Microsoft doing something but no one knows what.
