posted by AmiKit on 21-Nov-2006 10:15:26 (5911 reads)
AmiKit brings you an interview from the Pianeta Amiga show held in September 2006 in Italy where Massimiliano Tretene answered his questions regarding the PPC project called "Samantha".

In the second interview, Andreas Loong (Guru Meditation) talks about another PPC board with a project name of "Panda".

Thanks for the interviews!

Some comments re. the Guru Meditation interview:

Quote:
Guru Meditation: For a long time we were looking for a suitable hardware with PowerPC G4 processor capable of running OS4. It seems the Panda is the most suitable hardware for us.

Tee-hee.

Yeah, I just can't think of any other suitable PPC G4 desktop hardware than the notable, tried, popular and wide-spread UDTech MHC ("Panda")... No siree. When people think "PowerPC hardware", only the renowned UDTech MHC springs to mind. ;)

Quote:
We plan to modify the board a little because it was not designed for Amiga.

No hardware is or will be designed for AInc.

Quote:
But even this "big size" version will be sent to Hyperion ...

Why? Seems like an exercise in futility, and now I'm not referring only to an attempt to sell AmigaOS bundled with uncompetitive hardware from the "community basements" on an isolated pseudomarket. What I mean is that the necessary preceding exercise in futility (acquiring a licence) apparently hasn't been performed.

If Hyperion are supposed to waste their time on adapting AOS for hardware that it can't be sold for anyway, why haven't they already wasted their time on adapting AOS to competitive and more common hardware in all these years? (Or have they? ;))

Quote:
Guru Meditation: Our negotiations with Amiga Inc. started in 2005 but we had no hardware at that time.

Hey, that (along with failing to meet every single other publicly listed licence prerequisite) never stopped Eyetech from getting a licence! Don't despair, give it a go! ;)

Quote:
Today the situation is much better. The board is functional so let's see.

Well, the UDTech MHC board is functional. The to-be-derived-therefrom "Panda" hasn't even been designed yet, apparently.

Quote:
[AmiKit's] speculation: A few years ago, the Eyetech company were producing the AmigaOne computers under the license from Amiga Inc.

You might want to edit that. This makes it sound like Eyetech made an AInc product/design. AInc don't have products or designs for anyone to license...

Quote:
Eyetech does not produce any Amiga computers any more, however they still have the license. We know that Guru Meditation is in contact with Eyetech so it might happen that they will acquire the license from them. It would mean that Guru Meditation does not necessarily need to negotiate with Amiga Inc. which could save a lot of time. Another advantage of this solution would be that Guru Meditation will be allowed to produce their board under the same name as Eyetech did. If this happens, prepare yourself for a new AmigaOne v2

:D
B...b...but what about the consumer protection? All that extensive product testing? Every other hoop that needs to be jumped in order to get oneself and one's product licensed? Surely you're not claiming that the licence is utterly worthless and just a futile attempt of AInc to make money on products that didn't have squat to do with them? ;)

Is it even certain that Eyetech still have a licence? (I doubt that misconduct and poor products would have had an impact on an AInc licensee status, but there could be other factors as well.)

(BTW, Eyetech never produced any Amiga computers. Commodore and Escom did.)

Re. Tretene interview:

Quote:
AmiKit: And what about the license? There is a lot of confusion and problems in this area recently.

Max: Well, I and my friends are the developers and beta-testers of OS4 and we have a very friendly relationship with Hyperion. We do not expect any complications from this side. We also hope for the same situation from Amiga Inc. At least, Bill McEwen already mentioned Samantha in his speech.

Er? Friendly relations with AInc seem to be more relevant than with Hyperion. "Hoping" or hearing McEwen's empty PR waffle is probably not good enough, try the Eyetech approach and offer to loan them money, maybe things will run smoother then. :)

AmiKit,

She looks suspiciously unlicensed. Does she have friendly relations with AInc?

;)

So, you're taking stuff off, adding new things, changing size, moving things around, it's a whole new board. Similar schematics doesn't save you much work, as it sounds like an entirely new layout. (Not that schematics are trivial, it'd take probably a couple weeks to for example copy the 8641 reference design schematics into your PCB tool)

So the board they've shown us pictures of doesn't fit a normal case. Neither did my A500 or A2000, but they both went into a tower. My A3000D is in an extremely gradual shift to a PC tower as well. (Need to get back working on that someday too) If it could be available, at least it could keep a few people busy hacking their cases while we wait for the other board to be done.

Hopefully they don't go too far in redesigning it "for Amiga", as if it's too much "for Amiga" then it might not be enough "for anyone else" to be viable.

Very interesting PPC boards indeed. But, when will these beauties
be released for the public?

What prompted this search for suitable hardware in the first place? I thought Troika was building suitable hardware (Amy '05).

Dare I ask but is that 400 euro figure supposed to be for just the Samantha hardware and no OS4?

@jorkany
The answer to your question is within your quote - they wanted a high-spec G4 capable mobo (Amy'05 is (going to be) a low-spec G3 mobo). Although if you want my more cynical speculation, Amy '05 was looking less & less likely to work (at least any time soon), so they went looking for a design that was already known to work. (Although as pointed out, it sounds like they are basically redesigning the whole thing, so it may take as long as the Amy 05 to come out. Which should at least please the Samantha guys.)

Target price for the 667 Mhz, 256Mb ram including OS4 is Euro 450 + local taxes.

So the final retail price will be ~500 EUR depending on your country. Of course you still need to buy case, PSU, harddisk, keyboard, (...).
