I can't see there being anything newer than 4.0 for "classic", the stuff must be crumbling to a fine powder by now. When I use to have a 4000/60 I always had a nagging doubt at the back of mind that the next time I turned it off something would break and it'd never turn on again

In fact come to think about it, I'm starting to get that about my 5 (?) year old µ these days. double

@Stephen_Robinson:
strangely all the classic i regularly use are doing fine and what concerns others i turn on only ocassionaly they didnt give me any problem i can recall. i only have one completely refurbisherd board not in use atm and one flaky i test my soldering skills on. reading of all the a1 issues im certainly better off with my "classics".

I think you guys have a far too pessimistic view of the world. I am an OS4 beta tester and I have a classic machine with PPC. I will leave it at that.

From my side I'm really please with OS 4 classic on my 1200PPC.
I only regret a scsi driver for the blizzard as well as 3D support for permedia.

Otherwise it works like a charm.

@ wol

WTF ??

Do you like the way OS3.9 has to reboot three times before the Wb is loaded ?
Do you like the slow execution of 68k apps ?
Do you like the switches between both processors ?
Do you like the stability isues of the countless patches 3.0 has ?
bla.....

Mart

im mostly back on 3.9 as well. it seems more stable for everydays usage, boots faster thank custom kick in flash, and feels all in all more responsive if not for listing directories. but once there is 4.1 coming out for us i might go for it.
@metalheart: no stability issues here except for faulty software sometimes.

Is 4.0 for classic such a failure ? I realy cant believe it.

Wel, if you still want OS4.x then I suggest you go for a SAM.

Yes the motherboard is not cheap but remember what a new 1200 or 4000 or even a 500 costed in their days ? And all the other hardware are just of the shelf hardware ! (DVD,GFX,HD,case etc.)

just my advice.

Martin

@wawa

I disagree. OS 4.0 is a huge upgrade and way better out-of-the-box experience than 3.9. It can run all the new and updated OS4 software and looks way better. Stability is very good, too.

yes, keep your OS 3.9 on a different partition, but OS4 is a HUGE update and well worth 60 euros in my opinion.

Would be great to see an update for the classic -- like adding the swap usage (and of course any bug fixes). I have gone to at least 1 site on OWB that uses almost all memory -- then the system has nothing left for menu access. Menu items do not pull down, etc...

Same site on SAM --no issues.

On the plus side, there is a definite speed increase in WB -- which is great!

sam is out of question for me atm. there is no niche between my pc and my classics it could fill, and since judging by forums talk it seems to have a lot of issues still i stand back especially at this price tag. and yes. i have 3.9/4.0 dual boot on my main a4k, if you talk of comparison (i bought 4.0 right away, not for 60eur). im running pure68k code most of the time and it is faster on 3.9. native ppc apps are few. said that it is just my personal opinion at the moment. im open to anything that will come and will decide on opportunities.

os4 works with 64Mb ram but 128Mb or more is better.

What the hell are you doing that it takes 3 reboots?
It should only take 1 reboot for all the newer residents to get merged into the resident list and used.

I'd like to think Hyperion would allow another version for the Classics...

I'd love to see support for the Radeon 9250 cards and for Elbox to show more driver support. At least then, I would not be running out of graphics memory when running multiple screens in my monitor's native resolution

As much as I love the BVision for what it is, it just doesn't cut quite enough mustard when using OS4.0.

One can hope

Steve

this is why i stayed with a 15" monitor for Bvision 1024x768 max screen mode.

Bvision can go higher but will use more memory.
