Hardware News   Hardware News : New offer from ACube Systems
   posted by elwood on 14-Jan-2010 22:44:12 (9870 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy, 13/12/2010

ACube Systems would like to celebrate the release of the long awaited AmigaOS 4.1 update 1. This release sports a great number of enhanchements and new features. For Sam440 owners this update finally put AmigaOS 4.1 for Sam out of the beta stage.

For this reason ACube Systems wish to offer to all Amigans this time limited offer (and only while stock lasts). For just 490 EUR (excluding taxes and shipping costs) you will get:

- a Sam440ep 600Mhz
- a Nilox MW-100 case. The Nilox case has reduced dimensions (65x295x300). It is completely silent thanks to a notebook-type PSU.
- Samsung 160 GB 2,5" hard disk
- LG T20N DVD-RW burner

Please note that AmigaOS 4.1 must be purchased separately for the price of 105 EUR (excluding taxes).

This offer is available only directly from ACube Systems. Contact us using the form on our contact page.

Hurry up before it's too late and the offer expires!

Awesome offer! I love small, silent cases like this one.

@ALL
Does anyone know how this would go as a media player? I'm looking to replace a Ubuntu PC with something a bit quieter and it might be a good excuse to buy an OS4 system. Can it handle divx/h264 decoding etc?

It won't be suitable. 600mhz isn't powerful enough for non-accelerated H.264 video playback.

I have trouble enough with 800mhz playing back 640x480 .flv files. I know 800mhz should be enough, so perhaps it's either a lack of L2 cache or the fact that mplayer doesn't use any 3D capabilities of the GFX card to accelerate the decoding.

I think DvPlayer is faster then mplayer.
OS4.1 update 1 might be faster then OS4.1, we need to test.

P II 266 mhz is enough to play dvd quality video, so if 600 mhz can't play it, it must be because of graphics drivers.

Well I know that I shouldn't compare P II to PPC cpus but...

266 mhz is NOT fast enough, unless your graphics card does most of the decoding work. AmigaOS is not currently able to do that, so the CPU has to do everything.

FLV is flash video, and not exactly easy to decode.

Xvid or Divx AVIs are generally easier (unless the video has an insane bitrate), and 667MHz Sam is roughly enough (so 800MHz should be plenty).

But I wouldn't get anything LESS than 667Mhz (like 600MHz) unless you don't want to play videos or Quake 3.

Getting close to being tempted, but WHY 600mhz, the standard board is 667mhz.

I know what the rest of the components costs and the speed might only be 10% diferent but I really wanted the 800mhz version like this, yes I know the case is diferent but why not 667mhz.

So close, but no cigar.

edit:
This IMHO should be the new standard Acube offering at 667mhz. At under 500 euros it would be competitive (well sort of) and excite me even though it is a lot slower than my Aros machines.

Come on Acube make this a standard machine at standard frequency 667mhz.

Hang on, does this include your tax, because on your site you add tax to everything.

If so then it is looking like a good price if a 667MHZ machine when compared to other machines and you may get some decent sales if 667MHZ.

Did i mention 667mhz.

@clusteruk

There is a simple reason why we cannot offer the 667 Mhz version, that model is sold out.
Available right now are only the following configurations:

Sam mini-itx 600 Mhz
Sam flex-atx 733 Mhz

@Kadenaa
On my (fast model) Sam, I have no problems with my collection of XVID based .MKV files (even 1GB movies and 350MBx Episode series).
I use MPlayer summer release and I read these videos off the hard drive.

I don't know about other codecs though. The new OS update brings a newer version of DvPlayer too but I haven't tested it yet.

HD H264 are out of the question unless the Linux community cracks the UVD2 acceleration of Radeon Series 4000 cards (and Hans takes advange of this in his future drivers, the Radeon HD4350 has on board UVD2).

As far as I remember, the 600MHz SAMs are overclocked 533MHz ones.

The price is good - about 250 EUR cheaper than my 667MHz SAM complete system in a similar stylish miniature case. But I wouldn't recommend the 600MHz version to anyone who plans to play videos/DVDs or use apps like Blender. Myself I'm really starting to feel the limits of my 667MHz system's power.

Guys OS4.1 update 1 is awesome on Sam machine!! The software if getting better every release and having a SAM is really enjoyable. Don't wait any longer! Sam is silent, small and cool platform! If OS4 will implement hardware decoding you will not have problems with DVDs too and lastest DvPlayer is very fast with divx and other compressed formats.

Developers should test their SW on PPC440/500Mhz to make sure that SW works ok there, then it will fly on nemo HW.

(this ofcourse is more challenging with ported SW, like blender and firefox)

btw. realitycheck for everybody that nags about video capability:
It is said that SAM can not play 1080p videos.
That's not too fatal when neither dualcore atom @ 1.6 Ghz is able to do it. (according to the latest finnish "tietokone" magazine.)

(I know 1.5Ghz MacMini with MOS & MPlayer can do it, thanks to altivec)

@MickJT

Thanks I thought that would be the case. I have an 800Hhz G4 iBook that I know can handle divX never tried H.264 on it though. It was just a plan to get a Sam by stealth. I will be saving up my money for an X1000 if it turns out to be worth the hype.

Altivec makes all the difference, yay G4 processors! SoC PPC processors generally suck for desktop use!
