Software News   Software News : Jack 4.0 (MUI) released
   posted by djrikki on 16-May-2013 20:43:09 (5762 reads)
At long last the wait is over, I am pleased to announce the release of Jack 4.0.

Jack is a multi-purpose commodity for AmigaOS, AROS and MorphOS.

Read more --->

The AmigaOS version can be downloaded from http://www.os4depot.net, versions for AROS and MorphOS will appear in the next few days.

If your eager to download straightaway please remember to check the 'Uplload' queue on OS4Depot first.

Jack 4.0 has been completely written from the ground-up, bye-bye to the custom interface, Jack now fully embraces MUI.

Main Features:

* Comprehensive AmigaOS App-Store piggy-backing onto the already brilliant
OS4Depot.net. Includes integrated Arexx Support for developers

* Donate easily to your favourite AmigaOS third-party developers

* Quick access to AmigaOS Preferences

* Screen snapshoter

* AmigaOS Knowledge Base

* Image Editor, includes Batch-image processing

* Speedy access to all your connected devices

* Support for Push4Dock - quick access to your Documents, Images,
Music and more...

* Quick Access to WordNet - Thesaurus

* Basic file-management, Make New Drawer, Delete, Rename and Add Comment

* Open your files in Helper Applications

* Integrated Weather Forecast for any location in the world

* In-built file-search

* Currency-Converter

* Quick Filer access, opens two instances in one simple click

* Access Popular Amiga websites quickly and easily from the Dashboard

Be sure to read the known bugs and limitations mentioned in the documentation.

Jack 4.0 fully takes advantage of MUI Royale 1.0, however a few limtiations have been identified in the documentation and Andreas of Hollywood fame is working hard to resolve them. When this is complete I can in turn update Jack itself.

I hope you enjoy the new release of Jack.

Does MorphOS version also "piggy-backs onto the already brilliant OS4Depot.net"? Or something else?

Jack has been re-uploaded again because the .ZIP was broken.

Please use the LHA Archive instead, sorry for any convenience caused.

After installing Jack 4.0 it fails to launch. I get a requester with a HollwoodPlayer error:

"Can't read file applaunchicon - File:calendar.hws (current line: 350 - In Function LoadBrush)"

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

some errors here as well. Tells me AREXX isn't running and to start in System drawer. Did that (never had to before) and then tells me "TheBar" needs to be up to a certain version for Calendar to run. It refers to Line 23. jack does not run and I miss it :) using an X1000 btw

I still get a butt load of copy errors when installing, and just an output CLI when I try to start it...

@Valiant

Ok, false alarm...it's been operator error all along. Of course in partial defense the installation instructions could have been a little clearer..."Select root dir where Jack will be installed (dir will be created.)" would have been a very big help.

When trying to run I get the following message after Jack attempts to find Push4Dock (which I don't have installed):

Quote:

Cannot read beyond end of file!
File: filemanager.hws (current line: 179 - In function: ReadLine)

Same here on my X1000:

Cannot read beyond end of file!
File: filemanager.hws (current line: 179 - In function: ReadLine)

Try to install Push4Dock but it works also not with
it installed.

@djrikki

Did you include in archive an old version of WebP, aka the old 1.1 version ?
I ask because after installing Jack, AmiUpdate suggest me to update at webp.library 4.1 !

I have this evening to work on these bug reports/problems. I will also look at replacing the DOS scripts with a standard 'Installer'.

If anyone wants to post a link where I can find out all I ever need to know about 'Installer' please do so now.

@samo79

Yes, but it wouldn't overwritten it. Updated WebP files and included the missing '.datatype'.

#applaunchicon errors

Could be a limitation in icontoiff, not supporting all valid AmigaOS icon formats.

Fixed, offending apps will still appear in the list, but associated icons will not appear against them. I'd be interested to know which Apps are not supported/offensive.

#installer

Fixed missing backslash associated with avcodec.hwp.

Next up... resolve Push4Dock issues and I may convert the DOS installer script into 'Installer' script.

Good News. I will have to test Jack now. Version 2.x did not cooperate well with my SAM 460.
