| Well, it's not so much of a killer application if it comes for the "competition" platforms as well, though.
But that doesn't make it less of an achievement. Well done, Andreas!

No. Unicode support is there for Amiga systems too! There is an inbuilt text engine which works the same with Hollywood displays on all platforms. You have to use unicode aware ttf fonts.
For MUI displays/windows the unicode text is converted to the system's codepage.
Look at this OS4 screenshot:

The killer feature is that it supports our systems too! That is quite unique, and worth every cent. |

| @ExiE: Internally, everything is in Unicode on every platform now, also on AmigaOS and compatibles. When using Hollywood's own text renderer you can draw Unicode text no matter what the system charset has been set to but of course Hollywood can't overcome the fact that AmigaOS itself doesn't support Unicode so whenever you interface with AmigaOS system components you are limited to the system charset, e.g. it's not possible to change the window title to Greek or Russian text on a Latin-1 system and it's also not possible to use Greek or Russian filenames on a Latin-1 system, etc. Obviously, Hollywood can't just turn AmigaOS into a fully Unicode-compliant OS :)
@kolla: Unfortunately, the iOS version of Hollywood was rejected by the app store because it seems to fall under the "anti-Adobe Flash-rule." If convincing Apple to allow it doesn't turn out to be successful, there is still the possibility to make it available as a framework so that people can compile their own apps for the app store. That should definitely be allowed because there are other toolkits which do basically the same. |

| I am curious about Hollywood, and was hoping someone might be able to answer a couple of questions:
1. Is it possible to make platform native executables, or do you always run Hollywood programs using the player (sort of the way it works with Java)? If you can make standalone executables, is it statically or dynamically linked?
2. I just quickly scanned the documentation, and see that there are some "low level" graphics plotting functions, like plotting a single pixel. How fast/efficient are these, and what level of control do you have? I remember writing a small game engine using SDL. There I could plot all the graphics using primitive functions, and swap out the frame buffer when you wanted to. Is this similar to what you would do in Hollywood?
Right, so that's technically a bit more than two questions, but I am trying to get a handle on how Hollywood works and what it is capable of. There doesn't seem to be a trial or limited free version available, so while it is not very expensive for what it is, I do need to find out if it is right for me before buying. |

Hollywood can create native binaries - kind of. It's a bin code with embedded Hollywood player. The downside is that min binary size is abot 2MB (MorphOS, Windows, Android, OS4 a bit bigger). The graphic primitives are nice, but gfx drawing is not the fastest to think of. There are ways to improve performance, but if really high work performance is required, better use the gl plugin. I work a lot with Hollywood and like it pretty much. I more or less gave up on C++. With C++ the resulting programs are smaller and faster, but the development time is much higher. Here's a list of my Hollywood programs: http://via.i-networx.de/files.htm (all multiplatform programs are Hollywood programs) _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001)

Thank you. I am primarily a C++ programmer by profession, but don't mind working with other languages. Also, it might be nice doing something a bit different for hobby and work projects.
I don't mind the increased binary size too much. If I'm writing for a middleware layer, I prefer it that way, as it eliminates the need to install the correct version of the middleware to run the software. As a user too, I like things to be as self-contained as possible.
EDIT:
Software likeability, from good to bad: GOOD * Extracts into a folder of my choosing, lives in that folder only ******* * Simple install, but comes with working uninstaller ******* * Requires common middleware, like DirectX or Java, installs/upgrades them if needed ******* * Requires I install/download something else separately ******* * Manual install, and requires I download, compile and install other stuff to work ******* * Comes with an installer which offers to install a bunch of other programs ******* * Starts an agent automatically on every startup, despite just being a PDF viewer ******* * Requires constant Internet connection to work, despite not being networking software ******* * Frequently generates popups to offer me great deals! BAD** * Requires I create a UPlay account Last edited by Kay on 21-Mar-2017 at 06:13 PM.

| Hi. Please start considering AROS x64 among compile targets, for future releases. There've been some interesting developments on this platform lately. Thank you so much.

| The currently supported AROS platform of Hollywood is ABIV0 AFAIK. Does it work on the current 64-bit Aros? |
