News   News : See AmigaOS4 in action

Notice: Regarding the performance on Saturday, please note that the AmigaOne had the debuglevel set to 10 and also that the graphics system still ran interpreted.

If you don't have quicktime6 the .mp4 files are the ones most likely to work. If your browser can't handle that page you might try this one instead.

"graphics.lib & p96 are 68k and non-jit-emulated in the demo. Come back in a few days to test ppc-native version"

As i say the driver was also from a xxxx pci board due to lack the time, and emulated. And the card is an old voodoo3.

So the speed is incredibly high and impressive. In the next days we'll be shocked by the performance of an A1+Radeon kick ass card natively on OS4.

Enjoy OS4 guys.

Sigh, it definitely wasn't a good idea to set the debuglevel that high.

Also, note that there is no L2 cache support yet, which has a very big impact on the interpretative emulation speed.

I suppose the movies where taken before sunday. It seems yesterday there was no debug set so everything was smoother than that.

It is my understanding that this AmigaOne version was just a temporary diversion of resources and that work will continue on the CyberstormPPC version. Does this mean Hyperion will be working on the AmigaOne version for a bit longer?

OMG ! Lemmie get this straight, this little demo is on an old card, running interpreted 68K code, so is slower than the final version will be.

At this rate the PPC native code on a modern gfx card is going to be moving windows before you've finished thinking about it

I personally do not care at all about the speed.
What was/is important, is that a milestone was reached, OS 4 booted on the Amiga ONE.

Congratulations on that anyway.

However, I am not at all surprised that this slow version was released. I never bought the idea that the reason we had no news was because 'you only get one chance for a first impression.' and similar types of arguments.

We had no news, because there was no good news.
The moment good news is there, its released...debug level 10 and all.

But I am glad for the good news...just me personally, I won't be buying OS 4 this year, so I have no hurry on its release date.

I bought a XP system, but maybe next year I'll be in the market again.

No no, I wasn't present :p
I just reported what Massimiliano (Soft3) said in the italian OS4 mailing list:

Quote:
"La situazione è decisamente migliorata la domenica quando abbiamo sia rimpiazzato la tastiera, sia quando ho tolto il debug sulla seriale.
La macchina ha fatto un bel salto nelle prestazioni. (la colpa in realtà è mia, avevo dormito solo 3 ore per preparare la dimostrazione...)"

Here's the (ehm) translation:

"Sunday the situation decidedly improved when we replaced the wireless keyboard and removed the debug informations sent to the serial port. The machine has made an amazing jump in performances (the guilt is mine, I only slept 3 hours in order to prepare the demonstration...)"

I for one think that the achievement is a milestone. Allthough i'm not sure if it was such a good idea to demo something that was finished the night before (what happened to the "you can only make a first impression once" philosophy?). But then again, if they didn't, then some ppl would have been dissapointed for not demoing it

Obviously, things were moving a bit slow in the movies, but i think this is normal. Things can and will only improve on this subject (graphics.library and P96 PPC native and workbench PPC native).

I've got the impression that progress is slower than Hyperion anticipated though (with the graphics system still 68k), but this is normal in development.

There is one worrying fact though. Not a lot of people seem impressed by the CPPC demonstrations. Modules not present (at least judging by the showreports) and slow. Considering the fact that the CPPC version was to go on sale begin october (with a temporary shift to AOne so estimate early november), i'm wondering what is happening there

But all in all, congrats on getting the system to run on AOne. Hope you can crack what seems to be the last very important hurdle: the graphics system.

Keep fighting for it and keep believing

Well, THAT explains a lot. Even emulated (approx 30MHz 040 or so) the redraws should have been faster, but debug 10 to the serial!! No wonder it crawls.

We need an updated video RFN.

While i have the opportunity, i still have one question.

Will any more work be done on the AOne version for the Benelux Amiga show? Are you hoping to finish the PPC implementation by then?

Or will all work be focused on the CPPC version from now on?

Two milestones in one at Pianeta 2003!

1) AmigaOS4 booting into GUI on AmigaOne.
2) Petunia integrated into the OS.

Looking forward to BAS in Rotterdam.

No, not really. We're doing some more updates (I'm currently working on L2 cache support), but overally, the CSPPC version still takes preceedence.

FIY, here's how this version came to be:
We started out late August. Our idea was to rewrite graphics.library and make it work on a dump framebuffer that has been initialized through the x86 emulator in the BIOS. We already had an initial version that could boot Workbench, although not all the icons did show up (there was still no complete blitter emulation).

However, two weeks before the show in Italy, we started to doubt that it's going to work out: The rewrite would still need more time, and it's applicability would be doubtful (it used the graphics card as an unaccelerated frame buffer, which means it didin't use any onboard blitter).

Thinking about the Draco, we thought that it might be possible to run the original graphics library together with Picasso96. Of course, the graphics library would bang the chipset, even sometimes waiting for specific bits or values in the custom chip registers (for example, blitter finish, waiting for a spcific scanline, etc...). We then decided that for the last one and a half week, we would pursue that course.

We wrote a *very small* emulation of certain chipset registers (I think only 6 or 7 registers that are actually emulated). The result is what you saw in Italy.

Bottom line, this is the work of *only* 1.5 weeks. During this time, I also wrote a gamport.device compatible PS/2 mouse driver (Max Tretene aka Soft3 wrote the keyboard.device).

The PS/2 mouse driver and the "chipset emuation" even interact to provide hardware banging programs with the ability to read mouse buttons (i.e. programs reading the mouse button from 0xbfe001 will read the correct mouse button status).

Graphics.library is the worst thing of all. It's the heaviest chipset banger.

Currently, we're "preparing" for a PPC migration, i.e. it's the next item on our Todo list.

&EntilZha:

Thanks for the info.

I'm still a bit puzzled as to why you had to have a booting machine for Pianeta. But i've got the impression that it has something to do with Mai. Ben Hermans claimed that all would be revealed in the next couple of days.

I hope you can squash that graphics.library. Good luck.

btw. am i right in saying that graphics.library does not need to be rewritten for the CPPC version, but only converted to PPC? (i'm no expert, to say the least)
